early birds..............

We have been enjoying the sights for a few days now. Normally we don't get much pleasure out of ordinary house sparrows, but a pair have decided that it is really spring and are busily building a nest right outside our living room window. Neither of us can recall a time when the birds in the yard started nesting so early, so it is fun to watch and wonder.

We also got a big upswing in other birds checking out our garden. We frequently have a few of several varieties but yesterday we got flocks! Evening grosbeaks, redpolls, blue jays, chickadees and nuthatches all over.

So what are you seeing among your feathered friends?

So what are you seeing among your feathered friends?

Our brightest are a pair of Blue Jays and a pair of Cardinals. Mind you Mrs. Cardinal's plumage isn't as spiffy as Mr. Cardinal's is.

We have some very bold Chicadees who are not content with having our window feeder to themselves but have now taken to parking themselves on the windowsill and giving us some very attentive glances.

Most prevalent are the sparrows, juncos and finches.

Up til recently we had several squirrels raiding our main feeder. That called down the neighbourhood Cooper's Hawk. Now I have one less rodent to threaten.

In the summer the Jays move on but the Cardinals stick around. They nest in our cedar row along with several doves in the neighbourhood harem. We have taken down the trees that the cowbirds preferred and we are hoping that sends them elsewhere.

Gold Finches will be back and I constantly hope I can lure the Oriole back to our Birch Tree.

We have lots of juncos at the feeder these days and I spotted a female cardinal not too long ago. Nuthatches and sparrows have been around all winter. Chickadees were here a few weeks ago.

Just noticed two Tundra Swans flying north and east over Waterford.

Guess the Snow Geese will be next.

I can't keep up with the bird seed....honestly. Lots of chickadees, sparrows, blue jays and cardinals. Now the blue jays in particular kick the birdseed all over the place and an almost two gallon bird feeder that is filled in the morning ends up mostly on the ground by evening. This brings the neighbourhood cats to sit patiently waiting on the ground for the birds to scramble for it. Then the dog chases the cats. I don't know what part I'm playing in feeding who.
I enjoy watching them while drinking my morning coffee.

I have not seen a lot of winter birds this year, just the few geese too stubborn or stupid to go south. Even the bunnies haven't been as visible as last year, maybe because with the mild winter we've been having, food is more plentiful and accessible. I see their tracks in the snow, but don't see the rabbits themselves much.

Chemguy stopped filling our feeder a while ago. I'm not about to go walking through the snow so empty it shall stay for a while. Not many birds around right here. The lake and storm pond areas probably have quite a few, I haven't been out for a while.

So what are you seeing among your feathered friends?

Yesterday, I saw this year's first mature Bald Eagle

There are LOTS of glaucous seagulls around

Today I saw a whole tribe of loons doing some sort of synchronized dance from South to North -- like avian motorboats -- their wakes so big they were splashing

Comorants are everywhere -- they seem to like floating on deadheads (carry on, Jerry, carry on)

Bufflehead ducks abound -- I've been lucky to finally see them close enough to see them swim through the water -- it looks like they drag their beak through the bottom...they move so swiftly--and they are uber cute -- they appear and disappear like matter that pops out of the quantum fields underlying all reality

Uber matem acquiescently? Not dipping if you're caught right up in it ... like the search for intellect in emotional space?

Some call this spiritual as there's only a ghost of a chance ... para-eLLe to quantum sects with jig eLLes ... like santé clause thoughts laid out there? They say sacred journaling is healthy ... cause visible complaints are considered whiny ... is that naïveté or what?

How would you know when to stop giving if you didn't know it was starting to hurt? Could bring down a house of cards ... no Moor eLLes on that one ... he bloodied the veld ...
