Dating with Disability

I haven’t posted much in awhile. This has been on my mind, and it’s kind of personal. Here goes…

It’s been quite a few years now, that I’ve been single. There have been no shortage of flirty, flattering men around me, lately. It’s weird because I’m in my early 50s but they seem interested in me (at first). I’m in a place now where I could see myself having a relationship with someone again. I don’t think I want to get settled down again, but having a steady partner/ companion is something I’ve considered.

The problem is once they realize dating someone disabled is more complicated they lose interest. Politely, but I feel it, and it still hurts a bit. Because the problem, the inadequacy, falls on me. I don’t think peoples’ first thought is, “There are a lot of things we can’t do because it’s not accessible, and that’s a systemic problem.” It’s more, “She can’t do that, so we can’t do that. Our dating options as per social expectations are limited, and that’s off-putting.” And they realize that trying is going to involve learning to get used to the stares and the whispers, the awkwardness of finding ways to deal with barriers in public, and having to ignore peoples’ judgements. So, the response is, “If you can’t beat (’em judgmental people), join ‘em.” I could have a friends with benefits situation, but I would do so feeling like the only reason it isn’t more than that is ‘my disability’. And I’m not going to let myself get hurt like that. I deserve better than that. However, especially since I’ve had my scooter, it’s a consideration.

This has a broader impact. Social isolation and not being able to take part in activities are some major reasons why people choose MAiD (which I’m not doing - I’m just discussing). The problem, though, does not come down to the individual. It’s society’s response. And these days, the response is less, rather than more, accessibility minded. It’s obviously not just about dating - but social belonging in general. This is killing people. MAiD deaths were up 31.2% in 2022, compared to the previous year. And, in March 2024 mental illness will be an eligible reason. Social isolation is a feature of most mental illness, which is more common in people with other disabilities and chronic conditions. Accessibility - and acceptance of disability - needs to be more of a priority. This is the effect of our human rights being sidelined - it changes social attitudes, and more people feel hopeless in a society less accepting - and where barriers aren’t coming down, so you just don’t see us in those places. Out of sight, out of mind. It’s deliberate.

i have a friend who says i should date again
i told him i am in no rush

so what is it like dating now that you are older? do you notice any differences from, say, 10 years ago?

I was married and wasn’t interested in dating anyone 10 yrs ago. In terms of my mental age, I actually feel younger. I don’t know if it’s because I’m meeting immature people and socialization or if it’s a midlife crisis (that everybody I meet is having) or if being in a more dependant position changes how people perceive and react to me, and I internalize that. Maybe all three. The latter wears on my self-esteem though.

I am going through/have been through this sort of thinking in the last few years.

I am suffering much less of the 'dating' experience because I've known him for 30 years.

Shifting from totally asexual to a sexual person again has been a careful process.

And the Big Guy is 3 years older than I, as was my late ex-husband, but the Hippie was a decade older than I, and that is a gap that no longer works for me.

Well, dating or not dating - disabled people could have more fun in social situations, when inclined to be social, if life was designed to be more accessible for us. It’s not an impossibility, it’s a matter of social will - which the powers that be are determined to eliminate.

Age-ism comes in as kind of a dream ... it just isn't real anymore and like Afro Dizzy Yah ... it is life looking into the great departed ... and you know it is gone but still these remnants in the head.

I know pious folk that say thinking about such things, anything is evil and thus nothing creeps in as a mental deficiency for when it all goes and we stand down and relax ... from all the stimulants ... meant to benefit industrialization! Imagine total relaxation theory for those that cannot stand anything requiring calm thought ... comma toes?

Claws on words as they prepare to be lifted out of context ... to support diversity in the great unknown as outlandish to those that believe there is nothing beyond themselves ... nihilists, or narcist? Is it metaphorical or the same thing ... just on different sides of the divide?

The you get plus and minas ... men and women to confuse the ups and downs ... and the entire thing get turbulent as nothing! Upsetting????

I am getting to know this one guy

First met him at a local Fascist Grocery Store

There he was, in a 'chair, with a sign saying quadreplegic, fixed income, anything helps

I have met him at his home. His ride is awesome. He showed me with pride how souped up it is. He is married. Has a kid. Says how important sex is. His landlord is cool. His wife is cool. His kid is cool. He controls everything in his ride with a mouth device. So cool.

Good thing he lives very close to said grocery store and shops

Will probably experience more of him as time goes on

I perhaps think one of the problems is that there is a serious lack of actual culture here among those in the gov't who can help?

And when there is no culture, other things can creep in to take its place? Things that have no place there.

Personally, can't wait for Utility Fog and Smart Dust and Smart Matter

People go around in their 'rides, need to get down a hill, sprinkle some of the 'Fog and bam, no hill :3

Or people contacting their spirit guides and allies and ancestors

I believe my soul is quadrapeligic as it has no extremities ... perhaps why people of polity and politcal extremes put me on ignore and remove my parts ... explains where my intelligence goes to at night! I have to start again every don ... said to be a hole in the night bured through by God's torments!

The Celts take great faith in this as hard blarney ...

Are you like that guy from Memento who every morning he has to read all the notes he leaves for himself saying who he is, etc?
