I'd have a hard time describing any of Bill Gates' actions as "great evil". Perhaps inadvisable, maybe problematic, but "great evil" strikes me as hyperbole.

He's a guy who is smart and lucky.
He is, or at least was, also rather ruthless and a bit of a cutthroat if you look closely at his business career. Maybe not "great evil" but certainly more than just "inadvisable" or "problematic". There's a reason people with knowledge of the industry used to call Microsoft the Evil Empire in his era there.

OK, fair enough. I guess he's always looked "decent enough" to me compared to Bezos or Musk, in that he has always had plans to give a lot of money away.

Actually, Bezos gives away quite a bit, too, as does his ex. Bezos and Musk both have grating, confrontational public personae whereas Bill Gates is a fairly personable sort and I think he benefits from that image contrast. That doesn't mean he's any more ethical as a businessman, just comes across nicer.

Read the article and articles and you can come up with your own descriptions? I'd be interested in hearing your adjectives etc?

Cory Doctorow doesn't deal in conspiracy theories. He is one of us :3

A Calgary multimillionaire whose wealth comes from financing the oil sector wrote a pretty good about life priorities. In it explained it is important to be generous in charitable giving but to make sure there is a financial plus to that giving. Gates promise to give his money away provides good PR, but he has significant shares in pharmaceutical companies and Bayer/Monsanto. Much of his giving comes back in increased income. If he was serious about giving away his wealth, he could have given much more away and in ways that do not eventually profit him.

Monsanto is poisonous too ... they place both sides of the venom.

It is best to remember Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil where the ugly beauty is forbidden to cross as excessively psyche ... thus blackened!

There in the dark stands humanity and many with no wish to observe anything as perspective of science or omni sentient failure of blindness in fey word (th) or faith ... it is a grand mix for the sake of amusing those at work at the enigma ... kind 've para doxy ... parallel to a tease getting rye in the wilderness ... naked diabolises/diabolix? The hex is on ... then there be 'owls ... because some are not great scenes representing the wisdom of MU's ... these are limited and mortal! Its just how the darkness goes ... without IESus ... someone had to pay ... because of wisdom or alternate? They didn't know Beta ... the second incident ... the hatter? That covered it ... catch all?

I'm sceptical about rich people giving away money and telling the world about it. It sounds boastful to me, as does giving money providing their name is attached to the facility. The less rich person quietly supporting the local school, Food Bank , person needing some help impresses me more.

The thing is, having that person's name associated with the organization can benefit the organization when seeking other donations. "Bill Gates supported us to the tune of sixty-four million dollars. We wonder if you would be interested in joining him in supporting our efforts" type stuff.

That said, I find local millionaires and billionaires do tend to be a bit quieter with their giving than "big names". I know I am often surprised when I see the owners of my employer named on plaques and such since the family tends to be fairly quiet so I don't always hear about these things even internally. Even when they do give more publicly, they often put it under the company name rather than theirs (which is, to be fair, the name of the company founder to whom the current owners are still somewhat related).

I think it helps us to know they give something, if its anonymous we would just complain more.
But I do agree, anonymous giving is a higher form of giving.

Some thoughts on vaccination and the anti-vaxx movement from Randall Munroe.

Is the irony deliberate? I am pro vaccine but, just as data strongly supported vaccinations for guys my age to get vaccinated, data changed the riak and benefit ratios substantially for guys under 30 but that data was ignored by authorities. Many decisions were based on little or indeterminate data or failure to consider all factors of well being.

I like the second last frame: the most effective solution being the simplest and easiest. That never happens.

Data and general desires form the schism in the system of divine ... sometimes related to endogeneity as applies to djinns and hormonal relations in the system ... mental/physician crossover! Projected bi Atman ...

It is a logical thing like circles and turn about ... some never look back, or forward ... as they don't wish to know of Eris and Weire ... ohmi got ... stinking idealist! Trying to fix the unstableised ...

We all know what happened lol

We have things like science and facts of the world
Then we have Politics and Human Beings being Human
And Bureaucracy
And the Profit Incentive
And National Security
And then everyday English in a country where things like Islamophobia and Anti-Vaxxer and LGBT don't have exact definitions...
Result: chaos! lol

XKCD author does good work
I enjoy his wonder ones
Where he shows the vast beauty of it all

How many Covid shots has everybody had? I got three - in 2021/22 - and one bout of omicron a year ago. I decided to hold off on more shots. I felt that was enough based on what I was reading. It didn’t seem like those who were getting more, in my age group, were any better protected, and I was afraid of complications.

In the hospital they knew I had 3 Covid shots (and a flu shot) and didn’t seem concerned whether I got a booster or not.

When it started to seem like quarterly boosters were never going to end I became uncertain about the safety of getting them - people were getting Covid with mild symptoms anyway - whether they’d had 2 or 3 or more. I’m not antivaxx but not everyone knows what’s going on in their body that might cause complications and govt messaging was so botched I lost confidence. But I think the antivaxx movement caused the govt to botch their messaging and approach to try to appease everyone. The left is pissed at Bonnie Henry for lifting restrictions too soon - the right is pissed about vaccines and masks. I think a lot of people with health issues who were in a compromised position to be in public were treated horribly by the right, but then many who had less cause for concern became phobic - Covid has been traumatic on humans for a number of reasons.

I hope when the new, plant based AI created Canadian gene therapy shot comes onstream that it comes in different flavours, from Suzuki Pride to George Woodcock Smokey and Coombs Minty Goat *waggles eyebrows*
