 Have I turned this into a discussion of political fashion in the 21st century?

Seriously, I think the House should follow the lead of a lot of businesses and go business casual. Maybe even have a casual Friday thing where they come to Question Period once a week in jeans and tees. No shorts, though. We see enough of Trudeau's legs in jogging selfies.

Bette chuckles softly at the image of Mr. O'Toole in a red dress and heels

We so need a drag queen or trans MP with some fashion sense. That would bust the House dress codes, both formal and informal, wide open. Also seriously improve the diversity in the House.

“What if a small group of world leaders were to conclude that the principal risk to the Earth comes from the actions of the rich countries? And if the world is to survive, those rich countries would have to sign an agreement reducing their impact on the environment. Will they do it? The group’s conclusion is ‘no’. The rich countries won’t do it. They won’t change. So, in order to save the planet, the group decides: Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?” Maurice Strong

The politics of Bread & Circuses/Beer & Casinos ... Create a diversion. A political truism premised on the cynical – negative – view of humanity. I am trying to distinguish fact from fiction ... not because I have a horse in the race so to speak but because I honestly want to understand what drives these endless political discussions with no real substance other than idle gossip and speculation ...

I think you do a disservice in criticizing what you call "gossip and speculation". It has value as process and learning from others. I always do. We all struggle to be honest and show up the best we can according to our abilities. It's wonderful you have that gift. We all have gifts differing, but that doesn't mean we're heartless, shallow gits.

Some combination of frustration, cynicism, and sense of humour.

Also the court jester made fun of the king. We can make fun of the politically powerful's fashion choices, I think. As shallow as it is. We don't have to be deep everytime we discuss anything.

She may be a plutocrat, but she's my chosen plutocrat in a world of plutocrats.

She further defined the “good Plutocrats” vs “bad Plutocrats”.

Good Plutocrats included the likes of George Soros, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos who made their billions under the free-for-all epoch of globalization, but who were willing to adapt to the new rules of the post-globalization game.

This was a game which she defined in a 2013 TED Talk as a “green New Deal” of global regulation under a de-carbonized (and depopulated?) green economy.

For those “bad plutocrats” unwilling to play by the new rules , they would simply go extinct.

Another Canadian globalist Mark Carney, who recently said “If some companies and industries fail to adjust to this new world, they will fail to exist.”

As of November 18, 2019, Freeland has found herself cut down a notch by the “plutocrats” that she has worked so assiduously to destroy since becoming Canada’s Foreign Minister in 2017 when she ousted a Foreign Minister (Stephane Dion) who had called for a renewed cooperation with Russia on space, counter-terrorism and arctic development with Sergei Lavrov. Freeland’s unrepentant support for Ukrainian Nazis and NATO encirclement of Russia resulted in a total alienation of Russia. Her alienation of China was so successful that the Chinese government removed their ambassador in the summer of 2019. Freeland’s work in organizing the failed coup in Venezuela and supporting the MI6-Soros White Helmets in Syria became so well known that she became known as the Canadian queen of regime change.

Help me to understand how all of this is good ... I just can't seem to get it.

Again ... distraction ... I really am trying to understand what goes on 'politically' ... I fail to see how affirming that the thread has turned to idle chit chat about fashion in anyway resembles calling anyone a heartless, shallow git (whatever that is).

Help us understand that you have your facts straight and are getting them from a legitimate source. The "MI6 Soros White Helmets"? Suggestion of poor little Russia being alienated? Just a couple of propaganda points that stick out like sore thumbs and tell me not to trust your sources. Even if I don't like Freeland, I'm not naive. I can smell right wing propaganda. Where did your paragraph come from??

Well, I don't think, to start with, that anyone can blame Canada's poor relationship with China on Freeland.

It all started with the arrest of Meng Wanzhou at the U.S.'s behest.

And I also don't think that fostering a closer relationship with Russia would be particularly helpful.

Freeland doesn't hold these positions in isolation, or by herself. They are party policies, worked out by communications between politicians, bureaucrats, and, yes, lobbyists, but I don't think you can blame them directly on her. They aren't "her" policies, necessarily.

Outfits notwithstanding, she also seems to be able to communicate/negotiate on a high level with other governments, coming across as generally professional and reasonably agreeable.

I'm just reading your comment as personally "judgey" Ritafee. Your passion is sorely needed in the world. I hope you have concrete ways to express that.

I agree ... neither did Hitler or does Trump hold their positions in isolation ... and that is exactly why I am trying to connect the dots ... Freeland and Carny where do they come from and where do they want to go ... and how much of Canada do they want to take with them?

Because such heavy thoughts have triggered a leak of brattiness...

Everything is connected to everything...but, Freeland is not Hitler or Trump. Freeland represents the neoliberal status quo. As evil as it may be (I think it's greedy and corrupt) Hitler was certainly a more dangerous character - far right - and so is Trump. And so is Putin. Freeland is not that so it's a much further distance to connect those particular dots.

Except business casual should be made illegal. There has to be a law on it, I tell ya! To the gulag with business casual! Kakis and picnic table shirts were just not made for healthy human use.

But with a few drag queens in the house, everybody might up their fashion game.:p;)

Seriously, though, making observations about appearances/dress habits should be totally outside the pale when it comes to decisions about judgment/opinions.

Personally, I am generally a badly-dressed person. I don't care about colours, or wrinkles, mainly watching for holes, put on a hoodie today to walk that is over 40 years old. I have a limited understanding of "dress codes". I can do black jeans and a t-shirt. I can do charcoal dress pants, a reasonable sweater and a pair of flat shoes. If I must "dress", it's a silk shalwar kameez, a proper matching scarf and a pair of dressy sandals.

I think MUCH better than I dress, and I think better when I'm comfortably dressed.
