I hope so too Carolla, but I doubt anything significant will be done. The government will no doubt want them busy - participating in powwows, cultural festivals, dances and the like. However, it won't do much if anything to actually work with them to empower them.

The events at Standing Rock also allow (North-Canadian)Americans to realize who some of the nation’s most important leaders really are. The fight for environmental sanity—against pipelines and coal ports and other fossil-fuel infrastructure—has increasingly been led by Native Americans, many of whom are in that Dakota camp today. They speak with real authority—no one else has lived on this continent for the longterm. They see the nation’s history more clearly than anyone else, and its possible future as well. For once, after all these centuries, it’s time to look through their eyes. History offers us no chances to completely erase our mistakes. Occasionally, though, we do get a chance to show we learned something.

I am grateful for our First Nations people who often are the only ones standing between corporate greed & complete degradation of our environment - not just on this project, but across our nation too.

Another idea:

A multi-faith religious event. Imams, rabbis, priests, ministers, others each invited to give a short (maybe give them 2-3 minutes each) prayer/blessing for the country appropriate to their tradition. Intersperse them with music and readings from the various traditions involved. Hold it in a non-sectarian venue.

One guideline: no proselytizing or hating on other traditions.

I had a similar idea with what NYC should've done after Sept 11th...inviting cultures from all over the world in a vast festival of sharing in the common human experience.

@Carolla - I would like to address your concerns. Where do you see the colonialism in what I posted? Please understand that I was not saying that the government should avoid truly working with the First Nations toward having their issues resolved. It's just in that in the past government has mistreated minorities including the First Nations by allowing them festivals and such while avoiding their real concerns. It has allowed minorities to express themselves in cultural events and the like while denying them much true say in how Canada is run.

Just wanted to get back to the info on National Parks. Seems to me that if they are going to be worth visiting next year there is MUCH work to be done. Spending money on knowledgeable, trained staff would be a good place to start. More infrastructure doesn't add much to the park experience to me - roads merely need to be usable - not superb. Trails need to be usable - not paved. Campgrounds need basic services and sufficient oversight to ensure the rules are kept.

I camped in a NP this summer. Definitely not as pleasant as previous experiences. The next site was occupied by a huge bus style RV and a camper van and a six man tent. We counted twelve people sleeping on that site (limit is 6). Four or more youngsters played a noisy chasing game at 2 am. On the other side we had another big RV with air conditioning - which was their excuse for running a noisy, smelly generator most of the time. There is a Nature Centre building where one used to be able to get information about things seen in the Park (flowers, birds etc). It has been staffed by knowledgable people in previous years. This year there were two young people providing services in the building. Neither of them knew that a wren was a bird!

Some friends with a big RV were at the special campground for such things (hook ups, you know) this year too.. They told the Park Office how long they wanted to stay. They paid the full fee. Before their time was used up they were told they had to move out the next day as the site had been booked by another person. Um - they had been there for over a week - Park staff accepted their fees. 'Please put these other people in a different site', they said. Apparently that couldn't be done as there was no way of contacting them. "Why were they allowed to book this site - that is occupied and paid for?', they asked. The Park staffperson replied "Bookings are done on-line and aren't connected to the information available at the Office.".

Major improvements need to happen before next year.
