I wasn't a big fan of the movie.
Its not the size but how one uses the fan I find

ps my fav Kostner movie, perfect for him, was this tiny movie Perfect World. Directed by Clint Eastwood. The Postman was really fun -- a positive apocalypse movie (of course it was, written by David Brin)

the saying comes from the movie. The majority of people who remember when it came out remember “they”. It’s weird - in the movie clip above it says “he”. But I remember watching the movie back then and I always thought it was “they”. Occasionally, after that we started using it in different contexts, casually or to be funny - with the understanding that it was a movie line - and it was always “they” when I heard anyone say it.

I’m going to look up whether or not Kevin Costner has commented.
I wouldn't be able to tell you the movie quote, not sure I saw it. The saying is 'they' most of the time when I hear it.

Definitely how I learned it. Sometimes with the add on "said the lady as she kissed the cow".

And of course, "She is the cat's mother".

It was unacceptable to refer to a woman as "she" if you hadn't said her name first. Just as the Queen was Her Majesty when you first greeted her but then Ma'am was correct.

I learned it that way too, but there was a shift sometime when I was a kid to the point where his instead of they sounds a bit off now.
As for the she/name - not something I had learned.

oh and ty for the background info
so neat finding out aboot these things :3

so what does She is the cat's mother mean?

Well, the original story was. Did he have anything whatsoever to do with the movie?
It is quite the tale :3

What if it is not "they" but the "M" in reference to the medium where things are balanced on the line?

Humans are way off that ... even John Cash commented on walking it ... it goes over the vanishing point ... horizon event!

There he was gone ... few people grasp such conceptualizations of exceptions to rule! There they go cutting right through it ... Di Ablos! Similar to Abner but different ... alien essences?

At first Costner's character thinks it refers to a specific player who was unfairly caught in a gambling scandal and banned (Shoeless Joe JAckson???) and then at the end of the movie it is shown to refer to Costner's father
Hey, glad you are still tickin :3

I thought you meant David Byrne the brilliant Talking Heads lead lol. I’m like, “He wrote the original?…that was an interesting career venture for him.”

(Actually I knew they were different people but I had to look up Brin ;) I’m not much into Sci-fi books. Bain of our existence lol. Somebody tell some better stories ffs! They all come true.)

I actually read the original story "The Postman" in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine back when it came out. I think he then expanded it into a novel before the movie came out.
