A Public Apology for Chansen

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

Love this alternative....at least try
In fact, that is our approach. No one has been banned or otherwise sanctioned without repeated attempts at calling out and correcting the behaviour issue. However, sometimes that does not work. Sometimes being disruptive is the goal. Unlike certain social media, I don't see inflating our stats by allowing persistent trolling to be a good strategy.

Here is our current list of permanently banned accounts:

Jae - repeated trolling and disruptive behaviour in general, many warnings and chances given
Ritafee - disruptive behaviour after being told to keep her COVID conspiracy theories and anti-mandate propaganda to designated threads
StephenBooth - please don't tell me he has a place here
WestCoastGirl - involved in scamming members on the old site

In addition, Luce and Kimmio have both faced temporary bans (Luce for using unacceptable racialized language about Jae's wife, Kimmio for repeatedly attacking and disrespecting members who disagreed with her) but were allowed to return.

That's less in eight years than rpg.net hands out in a month. Supporting or defending Trump alone can get you banned or suspended on there. We had a Trump thread running on Wondercafe2 non-stop for his entire term and no one was banned for defending him. Dogpiled by members, sure. But never disciplined.

So, I really don't get where this idea that we are overmoderated comes from. We have a pretty light touch on here. Occasionally move a post or thread for being off topic. Occasionally drop a purple text warning, often for the same. But use actual mod actions like warning points (which can lead to a ban) or bans? Fairly rare, in fact. I can even pull logs if you like.

Oh, and the old saw about us being against religious conservatives? No one has ever been banned for conservative religious views. A warning or two for things like supercessionist language, which is antisemitic, but no bans for what people believe. The only one of the conservative crowd who was banned was Jae and that was actually for behaviour that mostly occurred outside R&F threads and was not linked to his actual views, but his repeated trolling. Pontifex, blackbelt, Mystic all left of their own accord (well, the last occasionally pops by). Oh, right, Mystic has never received more than a warning, even if it has been tempting to ban his ass back into the stone age at times.

Look, if people are really unhappy with how the site is run, why did we have so few people coming forward to join Council that we had to stop the election process due to lack of interest? If you don't like how the site is governed, get involved in governance. Otherwise, the people who are interested will be the ones making these decisions.

Here's the thing though. We have no idea how much talking took place behind the scenes before the timeout was called.

I don't necessarily see it as a punitive measure either. More like hitting the pause button.
Exactly this. Thanks for this nice summary.

Actually I have mixed feelings about this kerfuffle among the Council being discussed publicly. On the one hand, transparency is often the best.policy.

OTOH the privacy of the two individuals concerned seems to have been compromised somewhat.

And as for chansen's allegations about my alleged dictatorial behaviour, I reject it. While I may be quicker to react than the mods, that's my two decades of hanging out on forums and seeing where disruptive behaviour can take things. Power isn't my game, whatever someone else might think. The fact is, I am only still here because I love and value this community. I have put dozens, maybe hundreds now, of my own hours into this place between upgrades, design changes, managing the finances, monitoring activity, and so on. I really don't need a slap in the face like that and don't see how I deserve one.

If people think I am running the place badly and want me gone, start a poll in News & Business. If more than half the community who vote say I should go, I will resign my admin role and ask the new admin to delete my account. Because I don't want to be part of a community that attacks the guy who keeps the doors open and the lights on year in and year out. And, by the way, pays the bills out of pocket (which applies both me and Jayne).

Westcoastgirl must have been the attempted return of Namaste/ MusicalMacKenzie from the original site, am I right?

Just in case anyone is recalling that ancient piece of history. I also remember lots and lots of controversy about sock puppets during those days.

Thank you for your concern @chansen. I agree with what has been said about this being a private matter that is being sorted out. I have been invited to return as moderator and knew I would be. In fact, I asked to be invited rather than automatically reinstated.

A good friend who I knew since childhood died of cancer on Halloween. That did not help my mood in things so I decided to take a break.

I do like your suggestion that we "talk each other off the ledge" in certain disputes. This is a community in which we've been part for years. We've been through a lot with each other. We've fought, we've hugged, we've supported. I'm disappointed that my conflict with another poster could not be resolved. I'm disappointed I even got in to it. It happened and is over. I'll decide how I will proceed from here.

Good points as usual.
One thing I've noticed is that this issue with Chansen seems to have lingered on without an acceptable resolution....at least for him. So how should that be addressed IYO, as each scenario is individual?

You're welcome, @Northwind. You've always been the first to laugh and toughest to offend here. I'll have to redouble my efforts.

I clearly can't get past the loss of trust in the upper management, stemming from the original incident and carrying through to the more recent refusal to issue a true apology as if they did nothing wrong. I know that you and others on the council and off think they did, and I appreciate the support, but I can't observe them make moves like this one that exhibit echoes of decisions past without comment.

I'm not sure where to go from here. I'll figure that out in the coming days.

Have at er. Knowing that though means I can never ever reveal if you've offended me....... my stubborn Irish ancestry won't allow it. :barefoot:;)

I'm glad you and @Kimmio Laughterlove are back. You are both important members of the community and I value your opinions and perspective

I know I've been disoriented enough here on this site for things that were said to me in the original and the present set-up by those not knowing what it is to be well oriented in metaphor and thus easy to slip by without the stoics understanding much of what I am coherent about ...

I've been cursed to the dirt by some high level theologians ... so there ... watch out for demons rising from the aforesaid ... said to me the mire earth as clae O' patras ... and the dervish continues!

Metaphor ology is complex ... layers beyond some pious BS! Study the experts CS Lewis, Northrup Frye, etc. and so on ... remember only your story will go on; whether good, bad, ugly or darkly beautiful like the land of abstract (otherwise dreamy)!

It is a psyche thing of darker light (gamma)?

Good points as usual.

A very good question that @chansen might need to answer.

Not knowing everything that has gone on behind the scenes, how can any of us say what needs to happen next?

Overall I'm happy with this forum and the way it operates. The only thing that would have made it 'better' would have been if the UCCan had maintained their connection and support to it. Getting dumped by the denomination triggered some major hurts in my earlier life that took some time to work through.

Yes. Same for me
