Canadian election and other political stuff

I believe the Liberals were in power from near the beginning of WW2 until 1957 or 1958.
I think that's correct. Some quick Googling says it was King from 1935-1948 then Louis St. Laurent from 1948-1957. They won 5 elections during that time between them, 3 for King and 2 for St. Laurent.

I don't even have any predictions for tonight, rare for me. My late ex-husband was a political junkie, from a family of them (one of his uncles ran once for the PCs although he didn't get the seat). We used to have serious, for money, bets on election nights, based on our variation from the spread we predicted, on paper, finalized the minute that the last polls closed. The Hippie didn't much care, claiming they (politicians) were all against him. The big guy is a bit prone to the PCs, but was told to vote Liberal and I believe did so. Our riding is odd; Barrie itself tends to Liberal, and we once had an NDP MP, and our Green candidates sometimes do surprisingly well. When you add in "Springwater-Oro-Medonte" area, you are into serious life-long Conservative farmers. We ranged a fair way afield into the northern part of our riding yesterday. Now, mind, we were more in wealthy districts than agricultural, because we wound our way down through Horseshoe Valley, but I was pleasantly surprised by the number of Liberal signs.

I'm going to predict a slim Liberal majority, NDP down to very little, Greens unlikely to grow, Bloc down somewhat, Canadians super-impressed with Mr. MC thus far and less impressed with M. PP. Based on convos with a very unique demographic - my customers at the grocery store.

Apparently, I do need to open my big mouth...

I'm predicting a coalition of every candidate

Including reps from Raven, Bear, Whale, Dolphin, Crow, Cougar, and Frog...

And before very Scrum, there will be tea and crumpets with Devonshire Cream

There will be no vertical hierarchy, but rather a horizontal one

And so it goes

And the fun begins. Liberals elected or leading in 23 ridings down East and on the Rock. Apparently that's less than they hoped for but looks pretty good to me. One Quebec riding is reporting and it seems to be a battle between the Libs and the Bloc.

23 ridings?

Neat!

Humans have 23 chromosome pairs

Kurt Cobain was born in 1967 (adds to 23) and died in 1994 (adds to 23)

Knights Templar had 23 Grand Masters

I Ching 23 means splitting apart. Things are not the way they seem

Bonnie and Clyde died May 23

Numbers 23:23 was the very first message that Samuel Morse sent

John Nash was obsessed with 23. He died on May 23

Have fun

And with polls closed across the country now, a Liberal government is looking likely. CBC is projecting them to win but hasn't called whether a minority or majority.

The other story seems to be that the NDP meltdown that some predicted really is happening. They are losing to the Conservatives in London-Fanshawe and that's been a solid NDP riding for several terms now.

There's a slim chance the Green candidate might get in here. That being said, there's a split with Green and NDP. :(

Sigh. So it’s official. Mark Carney is Canada’s new Prime Minister, securing a win for the Liberals

Honestly, though... does it feel like a win?

Canada stands at a crossroads. Some hold onto hope, most feel disillusioned. The country is divided, and now, all eyes are on Carney. Will he bridge the gap? Or will we keep drifting further apart?

We wanted change. But is this the change we needed?

I believe the Liberals were in power from near the beginning of WW2 until 1957 or 1958.

Then we were nailed by nihilists ... because we believed ourself to be entirely free without recollection ... war was forgotten about ... as to what it could do to the Gods! Divination and bifurcation ... schists ... leading to schist oh mania ... complex!

So it is the next morning. The Liberals pretty clearly are forming the government again but also looks like a minority barring some seats changing hands in recounts or something. As of this morning, they are 4 seats shy and the NDP are elected or leading in 7 and the Bloc in 23 so as long as Carney plays nice with at least one of them, he should be able to get his program through.

It's been a bit of a wild.one in other respects, though. Only 31 seats went to parties outside Cons and Libs. Two leaders lost seats (Singh and Poilievre). Lots of seats changing hands in some areas.

So what is the new Parliament going to look like? My hope would be that the threats from the US would get our politicians working together. My fear is that with Carney not having a majority, the Conservatives are going to be more focused on tearing him down before the next election than giving cooperation a chance.
