The whole mutilating your dick as a sign of God's covenant is a bit weird.

I know a couple who had a child relatively late (with medical rather than divine assistance) who named him Isaac in reference to this story. Not Jews, just liked the story.

The Canadian Paediatric Society issued a statement in Sept. 2015 and reaffirmed it in Jan 2024.

The routine circumcision of newborn males is not recommended. However, the medical risk: benefit is closely balanced and the need for parent education is stressed.

Here's the link if anyone is interested. It's a long read:

Renaming as a sign of a new relationship of God happens again in the Bible, too. Think Saul/Paul. And, really, even changing names at marriage is kind of a sign of a new covenant.

In some Christian denominations an additional name is taken at confirmation. I don't know if converts to Catholicism, etc, do this.

Converts to Judaism pick a Hebrew name for themselves.

Pork rinds have to come from SOMEWHERE

My parents saved me from that fate; that was the default apparently. So they told the doc no we don't want that procedure done. And if it wasn't for my parents accidentally coming across them sneaking into the elevator to get the procedure done, my life would've been so different

Why did God declare Abraham to be blameless? Is it to signal the beginning of a new story?

Making a pork joke about a Jewish practice is what she meant. Please don't do that on here.
umm ok
that wasn't the joke
i have done it before here with no problems
and it isn't a Jewish practice
the fact it used to be the default in our culture proves that?

EDIT: OMG you thot pork and Jew? sheesh, that wasn' what I meant at all

I meant the *shape* of the things and always have...

What was I supposed to think when we were discussing circumcision in the context of the story of Abraham? Please read the thread at least back to the beginning of the current day so you know what's going on instead of dropping off the cuff bombs.

Please just drop it @Delightful Life
I will
Just letting you know for future usage of that joke? So you know and don't assume and I don't get in trouble for something I did not do and you now know you don't have to feel offended?

I hope that helps you :3

Onto the angels; Messenger is a neat name. It'd be neat to call them that instead of Angel. Messenger could be their...species name?

Anyway, I think it is cool that God recognized (or if you want, the writers of the Bible recognized) Human capability :3 It is a great positive.

Kinda makes me think of the two creation stories, wether or not there was a "reboot" of sorts.

Kinda like how we can make these programs that evolve "naturally" and make multiple iterations of the program, culling or ending one

Well now you know

I assumed you remembered me using that joke before?

I have read the thread to the beginning

At least I didn't blaspheme like you did with the dick comment :3

Some people here on WC are sure becoming weird...

The site is ten years old. I don't remember everything that's been said. Still standing by the fact that you made an inappropriate joke given the context.

As for the angels, I would say "Messenger" is more like their job. They convey messages between God and humanity. We see them fulfilling that role in Christianity (the Annunciation) and Islam (the delivery of the Qu'ran to Muhammad), too.

I will

It does not help me at all. I stand by my original statement that a joke about pork rinds and circumcision is in questionable taste.

If anyone is wondering what this whole exchange is about, please refer to post #286 by Delightful Life

This seems to have got lost in the discussion about the joke. What does everyone think?
I think it is a telling of the story coloured by people who consider Abraham their beloved ancestor -- though other Biblical heroes don't get that treatment all the time (David comes to mind). Fact is, on a straight reading Abram/Abraham and Sarai/Sarah are not blameless at a couple of points (the whole HAgar and Ishmael mess) and certainly show clear signs of doubting the promise. Though I really can not fault them for the doubt....they have to wait for decades for the promise to show any sign of coming true.

One thing about Abraham is that he seems to be very concerned about Ishmael. Would God have promised Ishmael many descendants (including twelve princes) if Abraham had not advocated for him?
