Historic!!!! ..... simply amazingingly historic!
Cheri DiNovo has introduced a bill here in Ontario to ban conversion therapy for LGBTQ youth.
Here is a link to a news story: http://www.torontosun.com/2015/03/11/proposal-to-ban-conversion-therapy-in-ontario
Conversion Therapy is a dangerous and highly discredited practice that has the goal of making someone "not gay" or "not trans". It has been proven to be incredibly harmful and terribly ineffective with a 99% failure rate. This practice has been identified as an important factor in a significant number of suicides.
I am so happy here :D
When Cheri was in Sudbury to conduct a consultation with the LGBTQ community I brought up this issue.
At that point Cheri was just going to put in a bill that delisted Conversion Therapy from OHIP coverage.
I made the point rather strongly that this was not near enough and we needed to protect vulnerable youth. I told her about Leelah Alcorn. I told her about the states in the USA that have already banned such practice for minors and the number of states considering such legislation.
Cheri listened!!!! .... oh my!!! .... maybe ... just maybe we will get this terrible practice banned!
The churches ..... christian counsellors ...... they need to take note .... the precious lives of the young ones need to come before unsupported doctrine.
Comments please :) ..... I am so happy!!

Maybe we could get a ban on conversion of politicians and stop them from crossing the floor ... without knwing really what they stood for to begin with.

Is that proof of chaos theory ? Seems like auto-crazy to me ... I try and behave reasonably so they believe I'am as strange as all the others ... collective subjectivity?

Cheri DiNovo is formally a minister with the UCCAN. We've had many clergy from the UCCAN move into politics. More often the NDP than the Liberal or Conservatives. Local perennial Green Candidate for Brant is Nora Feuten a semi-retired UCCAN minister.

Good on Cheri for leading the charge.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. On paper, it should be a cakewalk, with the Libs and NDP in favour and the Tories opposed. But, being a private member's bill, it could also get short shrift and get buried or even get shuffled off to the sidelines so the government can bring in their own version and take credit (not a bad thing in the end, but does delay matters). I'll certainly send a note of support to my MPP (Deputy Premier Deb Matthews).

Thank you so much!!!!!

LOL!!! .... I loved the comments!!
The next thing I am trying to do is get all so called counsellors to have professional oversight and responsibilities.
Counselling needs to become a regulated profession.

Many counsellors are part of regulated professions in some provinces. I wonder what the colleges of professions such as social work think about this....

I am surprised that OHIP covers conversion therapy. That should not be allowed.

Agreed! ... and further .... we are looking to get it banned as a practice for minors.
Adults can try whatever silliness they choose. It should not and will not be imposed upon a child that has no say.

At what age should a child's say reign supreme? At what age is the average child mature enough to make such an important decision as going for conversion therapy or not? Who is it that's currently coercing children to go to such therapy?

Jae .... the age of majority is clearly defined ..... we have a legal benchmark.
Who is coercing children into such therapy? ...... Typically it is those with religious beliefs. The stronger the beliefs the more likely they are to push for "fix my child" therapy.

Right RitaTG, I agree - a child is responsible for their own legal decisions once they reach the age of majority. By that time, of course, they are no longer children but rather young adults. That being said, I don't see what the big deal is. If young adults want to go for conversion therapy, let them go. If not, not.

That is exactly what would be allowed under this law Jae. A young person that attains the age of majority is an adult under the law and could choose to undergo Conversion Therapy. A young person that is still a minor could not be forced to undergo Conversion Therapy nor can they choose it until they do reach the age of majority.
For anyone ..... OHIP would no longer pay for Conversion Therapy ..... those wanting it would have to pay themselves.
I pay for my own therapy for trans issues. That is not covered by OHIP either ..... fair ball....

RitaTG, I never knew that minors could be forced to go to conversion therapy. Who takes them - their parents? If so, don't parents have the right to make such choices for their kids. I find it problematic to be taking authority away from parents and giving it to government.

There are some things parents can't do, such as beat their kids or do things that harm them. Arguably, forcing children into a conversion therapy or killing their spirit is not something parents should not do.

The question then would be is taking kids to conversion therapy equivalent to beating them. Cheri would apparently answer yes. Many would disagree.

I would likely say yes. I have seen the after effects of this type of thing in my addictions clients.
