Room For All

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

Good morning! For party planning, financial planners who are, sadly, winding down their affairs, for all the changes that come along as people retire from their professions, for whatever reason, we are here to offer support and listening ears, along with hot beverages. Come on in and join us!

This has been quite a year for both big C's, cancer and covid. I am glad more of us are getting to live long lives. Unfortunate that living longer provides more time to develop cardio vascular problems, cancer, and dementia along with joint and muscle issues...I am glad my main issues are joint issues and hypertension controlled by medication, and maybe the beginnings of dementia, though stress might be contributing to short term memory issues.

I wrote this yesterday but seem to have forgotten to hit Post. Another sign of approaching dementia?

We stopped going to our retired teachers party. We didn't enjoy them and decided we didn't want to pay for an uninteresting gathering with an uninspired meal. The event was organised in a way that made it very difficult to mingle and socialise. It included singing Christmas songs accompanied by an excruciating instrument. We made suggestions but they weren't appreciated or acted on.
Yours sounds a bit more interesting.

Which "excruciating instrument"? Any instrument can be excruciating in the wrong hands, but a few are inherently excruciating too. Banjo? Bagpipes? Accordion? Penny Whistle?

I would say that even these instruments fall under the "in the wrong hands" category. I recently saw a Fleetwood Mac performance that had the late Christine McVie playing accordion (hey, it has a keyboard) and it fit in quite nicely. And I, personally, am a huge fan of the pipes, even if I lean to the Irish uillean pipes rather than the Scottish variety these days, for which Troy Donockley of Nightwish is largely to blame. Anyone who can make pipes integral to a metal band has my respect. And he occasionally pulls out a penny whistle sometimes, too. Even the much-maligned banjo has its moments. Listen to Steve Martin, who is as good at banjo as comedy, play sometime.

For untrained playing recorder comes to mind too.

Ahhh . banjo - played well I find it intriguing! My neighbour's brother-in-law is a builder of banjos & guitars - a business started AFTER suffering a horrendous motorcycle accident in Italy 20 years ago - lost his entire left arm & left leg in the accident. It is quite a story - you can read it on the 'about' page on his website.

Our party turned out to be very nice....no musical instruments other than our voices, and we sounded like one sweet voice. It was cozy to sing together. The food was from a caterer who is retiring January 1....And it was an amazing meal (leftovers became our supper!). And people responded well to the words of wisdom (haha) I shared on the 'peace' theme, and the Mayo Angelou recording of 'Amazing Peace". We had time to visit, and we did a round robin sharing time where we talked about some of the things we hoped to do over the holidays. Our group is small...It's a sorority called ADK (international). It originally was not for retired teachers, but mostly for practicing teachers. Well, those practicing teachers retired, and the newer teachers don't feel the need for a sorority. So, we've turned it into (mostly) a visiting and eating club. I really enjoy getting to know the people in this group...some were scary superintendents when I was looking for a job. Now, they are 'sisters', and we genuinely care for each other.

With permission...

Good morning! Cancer and covid, teachers' parties, funny dancing, and excruciating musical instruments, we hear about it all here! (Even the human voice can create excruciating 'music.' I remember many years ago, a commercial for Aqua Velva aftershave, featuring MLB star Pete Rose attempting to sing the tag line.... ouch!!) Anyway, the coffee is freshly brewed, water for tea or chocolate is boiling, all is ready. Welcome!

If there was room for everything would emotions be at the core and forcing chits of data out there as intellect that emotions cannot deal with?

In the emotional state is intellect sort of like a hypnotic trance?

It would be grand if LGK was still in the physical presence for physical response of such essence as sentient ... said by some authoritie to be a ruag topic ... I don't know anything about such essence or so I've been told and directected for some years by those claiming to know IT! There is fails without due Caries ... in ancient tongues that's holes in the fabric ... portals to the outside!

I always knew there was something more profound in an understanding that has no bottom tuit ... just a tiny circle ... spot?

I went to visit my 92 yr old former neighbours in their new assisted living home. The home is very nice, they also have lots of programming. Getting used to the new place is difficult for him- he has had problems finding the bathroom ( STM is really getting bad) and also had a fall in the bathroom, slipping on shampoo that he had knocked over. Despite even having people in the same building that they know from the town they lived in for 60 years or so, they haven’t been out much. He refuses to leave the recliner and she doesn’t go without him. She also seems to be a bit more mixed up. Their place is full of boxes and stuff and the view of it alone would stress me out ( and probably does stress her, too). Still, she is clinging to the memories connected to the items.
I helped her emptying one box and filling a few shelves and took out two bags and one box of stuff for the homeless shelter. It didn’t make a dent in it. I think I will visit more regularly and get them to go out to the events. He gets out of the chair when I tell him- so we explored the different rooms they have where events happen.
She told me, after I left them the last time ( they were chatting with the people from their home town in the meeting room), she got lost on the way back. ( her vision is really poor). So I made a point to return them to their apartment this time, checking if she is remembering the way we came.

That is really nice of you to do that!

Sounds like a rough adjustment for them but they enjoyed your visit. Hopefully they will be able to pick up new routines.

What does STM stand for?

Today was a busy day that didn't need an over-long board meeting at the end of it. (I was at the church from 6-10 p.m. today; we had coffee and dessert to start the Xmas meeting, a photo, then the chair did not keep this train on track well, AND we had to approve next year's budget, almost line by line. Then 3 or 4 of us cleaned up after, dishwashing, etc.)

I have a very dear church friend, not just church, but various groups (and I've known her for 20 years), and she lives close, so Lucy and I often stop by for a few minute chat in the afternoon, particularly in the summer. Turned 92 August last, so good innings, interesting life, what have you. English, so common 'language', so to speak, about our ancestral homeland. Diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 ovarian cancer, already metastatic, in September. No real treatment options. She entered hospice last week, and in consultation with her doctor, has chosen Friday, 10:15 a.m. to pass, with MAID.

Went to see her today, to say goodbye, and get her approval of the big guy (not joking, told her last week that she was totally a judge of this); she likes his smile and how happy I seem. She wants to finish a final story that she started to tell me, tomorrow, so I'll see her once more. Makes me cry, so much, but also so privileged to be a non-family intimate in her final days. Please add Barb to your prayer thoughts if you do those. She was smiling about new journeys this afternoon. I'm just going to miss her so desperately.
