Novel Coronavirus

Yes, screwed up my first attempted dog walk today. Lady I was going to go with lives with a bunch of people, and her landlord's son and his partner have both tested positive.

This wave seems much more pervasive than any of the previous waves. Ms C, our daughter, and granddaughter are going to Calgary on Thursday for ten days and both are apprehensive about Covid. Our daughter works for a community agency in the Montreal area as a manager and educator leading groups with parents and young children, mostly outdoors but also indoors and has avoided Covid so far. Triple vaccinated.

While this wave possibly is not causing as many hospital & ICU admissions, the number of health care workers who are at home because of COVID - about 2,000 in the Toronto area just by informal survey, has an impact on beds available for care. So the effect on hospitals is still there. Many hospital staff are so overworked & exhausted from the two years of pandemic. I feel sad for my former colleagues.

Got a major in-person meeting happening at work end of next week (full day at a golf club's clubhouse). I imagine people will be fairly cautious but I can't say I'm totally enthused about it. I have a 15 minute speaking slot but can otherwise cower at my table behind a mask, I think.
Chemguy is at a 3 day conference this week. Not happy about that at all, as exponential growth seems to still be happening, Friday's wastewater data had another big jump.
Wish they came out with data every day. Based on the incorrect drop that was posted, both here and surrounding communities we discussed him wearing 2 masks as wearing an N95 isn't great for comfort or communication.

I also wish these things would step up. A conference could easily put in their own masking policy, allowing presenters to remove. They could also offer virtual options.

I'm actually surprised with how much restrictions have dropped that being outdoors, masked still isn't allowed. I would actually be more comfortable being outdoors, distanced with someone who has covid now vs. being in a classroom full of kids right now.

I use KN95's (Chinese spec) and they are a bit easier to work with than a Canadian N95. Our N95s don't play well with beards, even a fairly short, well-trimmed one like I currently have. Probably a bit less effective, though the ones we just bought are a good, tight fit so should be decent.

Got a source to order from online? Send me a message, share here, either is fine with me.

Chemguy actually isn't allowed to grow a beard because of ppe he needs fairly rarely for H2S. But better comfort with all the work things that keep popping up, more options are helpful.

My wife picked them up in one of the local Chinese grocery stores that has a big display of pandemic supplies. There are sellers on Amazon but I can't vouch for any of them, unfortunately.

I should go check sto8s out when cases drop.
Online it's hard to know what's legitimate and get a good price.

Nova Scotia had 263 covid deaths in total- 146 of them since December 2021. The first 60 or so were all in one LTC facility in the first wave.

@ChemGal - you asked about sources for ordering masks; I was looking a while ago & these were my prefered options - Canadian manufacturers who pivoted in response to need. I especially like that Canadian Sheild makes a mask (proceedural/surgical) that is biodegradable. But they also make the respirator grade masks. SO much plastic waste from masks. The other place I liked is Canada Strong because they seem to have masks in a range of sizes. I have a really narrow face so it's hard to get a good fit. Mostly I wear my Eurocan 3 layer mask with a 5 layer filter added because it fits my face the best.

Thanks!

Conference was about 10% masked SMH.
Chemguy ran into one person he does game nights with (online), they were both wearing N95s.

One of the big companies in AB is requiring masking again.

SK teachers are wanting compulsory masking again.
This community has lots of cases.
Hospitals are finding it challenging to keep ahead of the patients. Even office appointments are hard to get - I tried this morning and couldn't get one before April 29. The Childrens Hospital in Saskatoon is dismissing patients earlier than normal to make room for the ones coming in. It is ignorant of politicians to say "They still have capacity" when the two empty beds are incubators in NICU! In a phone conversation with a medical specialist I made a critical remark about Moe. The doc chuckled and said "I'm not supposed to say that of course - but I think you speak the truth'.

Use of Sotrovimab has been suspended here, but they are using Remdesivir for outpatients now in addition to Paxlovid.
Looking at the criteria, I think they are still missing a good chunk of people who should be eligible but are not listed.

I have been merely 'looking out for me' after seeing how poorly the provincial government communicates. Today fourth shots are apparently open for everyone 60+. Completely ignoring those who have pre existing conditions of any age. Hubby and I have pre existing conditions that make us vulnerable and are pushing 80. No fourth shot advertised prior to this group. I suppose we go line up somewhere with lots of other people in the 60+ group..

*sigh* we're getting close to hitting the highest we have seen for wastewater here. 5th wave peak still was higher, but it's close to matching that now.
I wonder what the hospitalizations will be like in a few weeks.

Fear not, deny it and it disappears if your denial is potent! One can even say if wasn't my fault ... even if you were in charge! Just because you can ...
