I didn't say it was the same level of risk. At one point in here, I think I said I didn't know. When I was asked more about it, I found out this before you posted it.Chemgal:
Although these show that there may be some cases of shingles related to vaccines, they both state that the risk is considerably lower. Again, anything one can do to alleviate shingles, aka herpes zoster, is going to reduce or eliminate agonizing pain, increased cost, increased morbidity and increased disability. That's no contest, imho.
Item 1. Chickenpox vaccines contain weakened live VZV, which may cause latent (dormant) infection. The vaccine-strain VZV can reactivate later in life and cause shingles. However, the risk of getting shingles from vaccine-strain VZV after chickenpox vaccination is much lower than getting shingles after natural infection with wild-type VZV. For more information about how natural infection with wild-type VZV causes shingles, see Shingles Overview. Lab testing is needed to determine if a person got shingles from vaccine-strain VZV or from wild-type VZV.
Item 2.
Herpes zoster
Herpes zoster has been reported after varicella immunization due to reactivation of either the vaccine or wild-type strain. The risk of herpes zoster developing is 4-fold to 12-fold lower in vaccinated as compared with unvaccinated children under 10 years of age. The risk of herpes zoster after vaccination with MMRV vaccine is unknown.
From earlier in the thread.I mentioned earlier in this thread, that the chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine though. I wasn't sure how the risk of shingles compared between the two. Chansen quoted the CDC about that though. I'd be curious to see the studies though, as it hasn't been around for too long, I wonder how old the study participants were when they looked at the shingles risk.
