I am not a person who's crippled with CP. that's offensive. PWD is just an acronym for people with disabilities. I don't like the disability label either but I 'll live with it until attitudes change.I hope that no one ever refers to me as a PWD.
I am not a PWD. I am a person who will likely eventually become crippled with Parkinsons.
Makes you wonder why the NAACP still goes by their name
National american association of coloured persons
Words do change and they change their meaning
Old words like idiot, moron had to do with IQ. Back when measuring IQ was advanced science.
I also think that individuals can be over sensitive to words. My sister in law loses it over "ladies".
I expect that seeler choosing to use Crippling to describe her Parkinson's affects is using a word that has meaning for her.
That would seem to me to be her right.
Just like American blacks call each other nigger but would be upset if i did
We all have trigger words though. For me and my kids it was stupid. It was just a word that really set me off for whatever reason
I feel compelled to voice a different perspective about disabilities.
It actually gets me upset when people say things like - I like having depression because it makes me more sensitive to others or I can be more artistic and then try to extrapolate that to everyone with the disease. Or when people say things like when I ate better I got better so it is just a matter of people exercising and eating better. It's just way too simplistic and a one-size fits all does not fit anyone very well. Eating better and exercising does help me mitigate this freakin illness but for me it is not a cure.
I am not typical. I need accommodations that the majority of people don't need. I happen to not like it - it's very litterally a dis-ability. (Do not post the link to ablesim again, please). To say that the world should just be made differently so that no one is made to feel different just seems odd to me - simply (and crassly) majority rules (which is why I am suffering through a Harper government) - we take measures to make things more equitable but it is delusional to think that people shouldn't notice that you are not "typical". I am NOT saying that people should be mean or treat you as anything less than a worthwhile human being. When we buy scissors should we by default get two pairs in case someone in our household is a leftie? Should books all come with larger font because our aging population needs a bigger font?
At the other end of the spectrum is this guy that I sit on a committee with - he drives me crazy - he says "well, I'm kook-koo for Cocoa Puffs" so no one should take me seriously. That just encourages people to treat people with mental illness badly - it can also be seen as self-stigmatization.
Hmm, maybe there should be a pill.....
When you take it, it randomly changes a characteristic about you. You have no idea what characteristic it is. You are required to take one pill every month.
The pill could2
affect your looks: typical mediocre, or a face that causes 2nd glances: either negative or positive
affect your physical ability: typically mediocre, or physical ability that is either a big challenge to your movement, or...a big asset to your movement
affect your vision: typically mediocre, or lesser or better -- maybe superman abilities
affect your hearing
affect your brain: cognitive abilities - avg, awesome, lesser
affect your brain: mental health -- avg, awesome, challenging --
and so on.
One of the random elements of this pill is that you are not guaranteed to go back to your previous state. Some of your changes may become permanent.
Given that there is a posture on this thread of not healing or stopping injuries as we need to focus on making our place more inclusive, than maybe a pill such as this would have a similar result.
What do you think? Good investment proposal and government mandated item?
If every month you throw a dice and could end up with some random item, then maybe...people would vote for more inclusive government packages, employment packages and laws.
