On vaccines. It was conservatives who dismantled the domestic capacity of drug production when they started privatizing and outsourcing every damn thing - so why is Michelle Rempell blaming Trudeau? He's doing what he can. They can only go so fast, to build back that capacity that was lost.

Being "a mate' is still a part of our culture....

To me, that explains, why most (but certainly not all) were not so concerned with individual rights -and could be persuaded to do what was considered to be in the best interests of society as a whole.
Good on you Mate.

Since the near beginning of human history, for 60,000 years, Aboriginal people kept and cared for the huge mass of land you are now claiming credit for as your home and native land because the European Settlers adapted so nicely to their new environment.

On January 26, 1788, Britain’s First Fleet landed in Sydney Harbor, marking the beginning of European colonization.

How does one celebrate that day of joy and patriotism, as any good law abiding Australian citizen should?

How does one ignore the reality, that it is an unimaginably painful day for Aboriginal people?

Aboriginal individuals suggesting that it is an act of violence to praise the day Europeans came and took their land ...

How dare they, those Aboriginal people, choose to resist and to mourn and not celebrate like the normal Australians.
Australians will be enjoying as normal as possible festive season.
If, in our next Winter, the numbers get out of tracing control, I hope we'll be asked to lock-down again.

The results speak for themselves.

How are the natives doing ... being that you just don’t have the resources in your country to deal with their mental health issues, let alone the issues around respiratory illness within their communities. And their selfish suicide epidemic? Are they still refusing to adapt for their own good to be confined in institutions or raised by white families. Sometimes you just gotta “breed out the color” — and act out a little biological and sociocultural genocide to be able to adapt yourselves. Oppression of Aboriginals continues to be practiced today, for the common good - mass incarceration, houselessness, poverty, murder, and throw in some sexual violence ... So much to be proud of.

Who can count the ways that respect for Aboriginal peoples’ wishes are ... banned.

Australia according to ...
My own theory is that, compared to many similar countries, our "European settler' period is only just over 200 years old. In our case - it was mainly those from Britain and Ireland. Imagine the shock? They travelled across the world to a completely different environment - and it took the best part of 100 years to learn to adapt.
Invasion Day is legally mandated as “Australia Day.” ... and Victoria is yours again. Celebrate while you are humanely allowed.

I agree that the white settlers treated the aboriginals badly at the time of colonization (eg. putting arsenic in the flour that they were paid in lieu of wages).
They are still not treated well today - and it's a shameful blot on on our character.

That said, I don't have a binary view of life - the "goodies" and the "baddies".

I also have compassion for many of the convicts who were sent -in many cases for minor crimes - against their will to a totally foreign climate and country - never to see their friends and family again. Fear and life out of your control often leads to poor behaviour.

Incidentally, there has been very few coronavirus cases amongst our aboriginals - despite their relatively poor health.

That's because their culture emphasis the community - not the individual.

Perhaps European Australians have learnt from our aboriginal inhabitants? After the massive devastation by bushfires late last year and early this year our bushfire organizations are, at long last, incorporating traditional aboriginal fire burning practices in their plans.

Kudos, @PilgrimsProgress , for taking Ritas hostility with grace.

Thank you for your support - I must confess it wasn't easy..........

I once read something that has stayed with me - "the disturbance we cause around us is in direct proportion to the disturbance within us".

Living with an anxiety/depressive disorder I know that my own behaviour reflects this - and thus I have learnt to see it operating in others.

In my private life I've learnt to surround myself with folks that are at peace with themselves, and my own health has benefitted from this discipline.

Bull s**t.

I'm not sure what that's a response to. All I know is that if you have a planet with 7.8 billion people, if you don't congregate them in large cities with dense housing, you're either living in totally inhospitable environments, or you've got no leftover land for agriculture, so everyone starves.

Thanks to wiki,

"World population density The world population density is 57.0 people per square kilometer (147.7 per mi 2) as of November 2020.This number is calculated using 7,763,035,303 people as the world population and 136,120,354 km 2 (52,556,368 mi 2)as Earth's total area. This is the sum of land and water areas within international boundaries and coastlines of all the countries in the world."

Not to make fun of someone losing their sense of smell because that does sound fairly miserable.

It is. I completely lost my sense of smell some 4-5 years ago, thanks to a steroid nasal spray. The first year was both irritating and potential dangerous. If you can't smell, you can't taste, and so you can't tell if food has gone off. Also, you can't test for seasoning in a meal, which doesn't matter too much if it's just you, but I had to have my daughter taste-test all food going out (for the church, usually).

It has returned to some extent, but I don't get the pleasure from eating that I used to.

tyranny is alive and growing in our world now.

This position puzzles me. I look at the world a century ago, and see much more "tyranny" than I do now. I also don't feel tyrannized by advances in modern medicine that allow me to be healed of many ailments that would have killed me a century ago (for instance, my skin disorder, which often requires antibiotic ointment). Could the technology of 100 years ago have allowed me some reasonable sight, with my tri-focals and various corrections?

There's definitely wrong side paths a number of us have taken. There's definitely injustice and bad things in the world. 100 years ago, we thought residential schools were a great idea; today, we apologize for them and aim to work towards right relations with all our neighbours.

I honestly think, rita, that you're a bit unhinged by the pandemic; I sincerely hope you will be in a better state when it's over. You certainly present as very angry and confrontational with everyone, even those who are gentle in their responses to you. And I totally definitely know that you should not get a COVID shot. Most of the rest of us will suck it up for you.

History, which is rooted in nature, follows patterns. Indigenous patterns allowed them to survive many generations. The patterns of progress have been in play for about half of a century. Those patterns are carrying us to the brink of catastrophe. Either we change our commitments or we perish.

I am a particular manifestation of our universal life. This being the case from conception to maturity. Consciousness was submerged as my ego developed. That ego led me along many self destructive paths. This changed at a certain point. From that point I understood my biological being as secondary. My primary being is consciousness at the heart of life. As is the case with all human being.

This awareness has formed me for resistance to those powers by which the earth and its peoples are being destroyed. Tolkien knew this well. He shared his insights through literature. In “Lord of the Rings”, Frodo must resist the seductions of power. All while dark riders seek him out. With Frodo, and many others, I refuse and resist the seductions of power.

The patterns of progress have been in play for about half of a century.

Oh, dear, do I ever disagree with this statement, unless you'd like to clarify.

"Evolution" is a natural thing. Sometimes, humans do unnatural things to the natural order, but this has existed since the beginning of human consciousness.

You only have a Christian-type faith because some Christians convinced a Roman Emperor that a new state religion was a good idea.

The patterns of progress have been in play, since Homo Sapiens evolved into an upright, self-aware, larger-brained, tool-using mammal.

If we totally screw it up (and it's not always the fault of "the extinguished", especially if it happens because of volcanoes or asteroid strikes), I haven't decided whether I'm betting on racoons or octopi as the next apex predator, complete with "god".

Thank you for catching the error. Someday I may get things right.

I agree. Do you think the patterns of progress follow a historical rise and fall?
In the West, yes. China and India had a much steadier, more continuous history prior to the arrival of European colonialism so I am not convinced the pattern is inevitable to our species, only to Western society.

I honestly think, Bette that you are more than a bit unhinged by the 'alleged' pandemic. I sincerely hope you will come to your senses before it is too late. You certainly present as very confident that you are more capable of making informed decisions than any one such as myself simply because I disagree with the 'official' narrative. There is a difference between being gentle in your response than being patronizing. You know that I should not get a COVID shot? Most of the rest of us will suck it up for you? It is not about me getting a shot or not getting a shot. It is about the 7th generation principle. Most of the rest of 'you' here seem to have a lot of contradicting 'values' from thread to thread. I try to be consistent. I do not want anyone to take this vaccine ... but it is very unlikely that I can stop anyone from doing so other than myself. What is maddening for people like myself is that we have seen this agenda play out ... Mandatory Vaccination ... and people like yourself ... promoting it a the savior of humanity and silencing the ones who understand it to be a bigger harm than good ... in the long run.

That you belittle that worldview rather than respecting it ... does not speak well to your ability to make informed decisions based on the big picture.
