WE. What in earth is going on?

Guess this is the best thread to rant about this.

So Ottawa is now locked in the battle of the duelling committees. The Conservatives want a special committee that will look into the WE scandal. The Liberals and the NDP are pushing for a special committee to look at COVID funding in general, ie. not focus on WE. Tomorrow is an opposition day and the Conservatives may bring a motion to create their committee before the house.

The Liberal response? They threaten to call an election if the motion passes.

Can you say overkill? Can you say using a howitzer to take out a wasp nest?

Fact is, the NDP seem to be onside with the Liberals, which means they will likely vote with the Liberals against the Conservative motion in order to then move to get their own proposed committee before the house. There is no need for the Liberals to get heavy-handed in other words.

And if they do force an election? f*** them. We don't need an election right now. We need a working Parliament focussed on COVID and the economic recovery, not to mention other outstanding issues like the lobster war in NS.

Consider the lessor of the 2 we evils as it appears we can't escape IT! Like ermine as weasels in a snow job ... white out?

It may still be era*sure ...

I honestly don’t get Trudeau. Surely , during the break he created for no reason other than the shut down the WE controversy , they could come up with a plan
but no. The only plan seems to be obfuscate

they redacted things they should have let the parliament lawyer redact

they are hiding something very big. Or they are very stupid

now WE has produced documents saying Sophie was paid $24,000 ish for 8 appearances for her expenses

gosh these people have high expenses

has anyone here every submitted expenses for a business trip? Hotels and food, taxis, plane tickets. These are all strictly monitored by any company we have ever worked for. Meals of approx $100/ day. Mid priced hotel, cheapest flight.....

they have been itching to call an election without it being their fault But the whole thing is their fault

the slack Covid response
the WE issue

they Own this mess

so far in committee trying to look at this all opposition have been together. Charlie Angus for the NDP has been brilliant at trying to hold feet to the fire

so if they did nothing wrong. Prove it

I can't help contrast this situation to how Angela Merkel lives. She doesn't have the luxuries most leaders do. She lives very 'middle class"...shops for her own groceries and pays her own bills for everything.

Remember these people in the west are politicians ... not necessarily just as free will's are upheld more than proper justice! They are extremists ... if you research what poles and politicos means ... no means of mental process? Ste. Fini ... or as SET in the way ... C'est Finny? Believe it is fishy ... said fisherman with Peter Prin.

Trudeau definitely seems to want to trigger an election. How stupid

and what he forgets is that the GG doesn’t have to allow that. The GG can turn to the opposition to see if they can form government with the confidence of the house. Wouldn’t that just be a hoot for Justin

The GG can turn to the opposition to see if they can form government with the confidence of the house.

But that isn't viable. The NDP will not get into bed with the Conservative Party (and if they were to, I'd never vote for them again, and I have done so many times in the past).

But the Bloc + Conservatives or NDP might. I would have to check the math. Not that I want to see the separatists forming a government.

But BQ is WAYYYYY to the left of many parties, including the Liberals. So I find that unlikely.

Worst case scenario is that Libs force an expensive, unnecessary election, only to win...a minority.

My sense is if he wants even another minority, he needs to move now. He's melting like the wicked witch of the west. It's also possible he doesn't even care if he wins. Maybe he's had enough and will try for a graceful exit. If the Cons do win (in the event of an election), they better not spend all their time going after Trudeau once he's gone.
Bit of a sidetrack, but Ontario Premiere Doug Ford seems ambitious to go Federal. I do think we'll hear more of him. He seems to be cosying up the the Libs for some reason. He's proving to be flexible out of covid necessity.

Looks like ndp will likely abstain allowing the motion to fail

sort of surprising as Singh was really angry in tv last night. But he has boxed himself into a corner of being the liberal stooge and now he is stuck. No money for an election so be as mad as you want but don’t call Justin’s bluff

too bad. I wondered how Trudeau was going to weasel out of it

polls give them an every decreasing lead and as Covid cases mount up their ineptitude is showing more and more

but what are they hiding? What is so terrible that you are willing to shut down parliament again to hide

it will come out again. Assume they win another minority. The committees reform with almost the same players and here we go again. They win a majority? The committees will still bring it up on,y with a majority in the committees they will be able to shut it down

so that head line is. “Trudeau shuts down all inquiries into the scandals with majority votes on committees. What are they hiding. “

It reeks of the sponsorship scandal mistakes.
advice is always, let the facts out, defend what you can. Apologize for what you can’t. Move on

Trudeau will get his comeuppance at the polls I hope, but now is really not the time. As to Singh, it is a choice he should NOT have had to make. There is simply no way that motion should have been a confidence motion. Trudeau knows the NDP can't afford an election this soon after the last one and he's using that knowledge to force them into actions they likely would not take otherwise. This is old school politics as usual and reeks of the Chretien era Liberal Party. I just hope we can make it past the second wave, and maybe the winter, before someone finally does call Trudeau's bluffs.

Yet-I see no evidence of mediums ... that thin red line at the centre ... crazy/will's?

The think and know is insane ...

There was an interesting (to me at least) article/opinion piece in The Star today by Matthew Torigian re the forensic review results. The closing paragraphs -

"The case is clear: WE Charity was not looking for a lifeline. It didn't get special treatment. It was properly approached by the bureaucracy. And neither the charity nor its co-founders stood to profit from the CSSG.
But a story like that doesn't sell papers or threaten to bring down a government. All it does is hurt thousands of children and dim the flame of volunteerism, at a time when Canada - and the world - has never needed it more. "
Link to article - Forensic analysis exonerates WE Charity and the Canadian government Hopefully the Conservatives will move on.

I read the article

what stands out to me is that he says he examined all these pages. But we know that the requested pages have been redacted significantly. So it feels like a review of not complete facts. And of course that makes no sense

if government committees can’t get the raw data he can’t possibly get it. Parliament was prorogued to stop the data from getting out

as to who had the idea first. WE testified that they were lobbying the government , illegally as it turned out, with a different idea. And Minister Chagger suggested to them the modifications that became the student volunteer program. Certainly that was what they testified to

WE Charity had multiple ‘opening’ ceremonies for Kenya school: former donor

this article is from the Star. It is also in today’s Globe and Mail.

another odd story about WE. It sounds like, though just from what you can read, that the charity sold naming rights to schools to multiple large donors. That would be a NoNo. You can definitely have multiple donors no a donor will of plaques. Most schools and hospitals do that for special wings. But if I give millions to have the wing named after me, you can t also name it after Tom and just pretend.

Fame and power can be powerfully corrupting. It is sad they do were not as sharp at monitoring their egos as they were at PR.

Heh He ... is a high state of dubious laughter ... considering the corruption involved ... Power hates parables and blarney ... truth in a story?

Who dah thought ...

I remember those kids as teens, though. They were pretty inspirational.

I don't think "fame" or "success" makes anyone any nicer, and often has the opposite effect.
