Novel Coronavirus

Most of the elderly develop some sort of relationship with their caregivers, so even during quarantines, it's much the same people they continue to see.....although meal times together are stopped for those affected along with group activities.

Agreed. But our local nursing homes host quite a few volunteer "mealtime helpers". They are a huge help in making sure that some of those less able to feed themselves get enough to eat. I am friends with an independent couple of retirees who "help to feed their neighbours" at a local care home M-F twice a day. This group is used to being shut out during regular flu lockdowns, but not for 5 months. It's been very hard on them, especially knowing that some of their friends have died alone during this period.

but what can it hurt

that is what I don’t understand. People like Rita feel that their rights are infringed. But dose it hurt those people. Peripheral in general. It sure doesn’t feel like it. It feels like an argument for arguments sake
Does it hurt to throw garbage out the window?

It is not about my rights versus your rights ... it is about informed consent and my decision based on that informed consent. I have not told anybody that they should not wear a mask ... I am saying there is no evidence that the masks are effective enough to warrant mandating the wearing of them by healthy people. Pollution is also a factor for me. All of this environmental pollution to produce disposables and all of the toxic disposables with no where to be safely disposed of. Masks, based on added pollution alone - are detrimental to overall health globally. We can curb the spread of disease without every person in the world being masked or plastic coated. It is not because I am selfish that I would not want masks mandated ... it is because it is absolutely not necessary. What harm can it do? ... look around ... we are suffocating under protection already ... what are we protecting ourselves from ... quality of life?

Your opposition to masks is similar to cities’ objections to homeless encampments in public parks. Their argument on behalf of homeowners in the area - and it pops up frequently in cities everywhere - is that citizens right to enjoy the park in the manner they always have is more important than homeless people’s basic survival. And that is also why gentrification is put before low income housing - property value is more important than human life. For those who have them, maintaining privileges and comforts is often seen as more important. What you are arguing for is not your rights, but to maintain your privilege while people are at risk. It comes off as really selfish.

but I think there are better solutions and other pressing issues with care homes.

You might be right, but damn, it would be a big one.

I visited my Mom twice a week, at least, in the years she was in a home, even when she was a 60 km drive away on bad roads because of the "geographic area" rules. I got shut out from visiting her in both of the homes she was resident of (we were happy when she got moved back into town) for several weeks at a time, sporadically, during flu season (late fall/winter). Being able to see and talk to her when she was "in lockdown" would have been hugely helpful to everyone's mental health.

Give it up already ... I will wear a mask when and where I see fit. No more maskdebating for me in this thread.

—Moderator Richard Bott

Poverty can happen very quickly to anyone. Aware that some pandemic-related relief programs (such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, CERB) are scheduled to wind up in July, Moderator Richard Bott has written to elected officials encouraging them to seize the moment to roll out a universal basic income (UBI) program in collaboration with the provinces, territories, and Indigenous leadership.

And I think of my friend who has lost her husband to a care home due to Parkinson's. He can't hear much, can barely manipulate a tablet. She spends hours every morning on-line via Skype or something talking with him using as many strategies as her teacher heart can develop; they do a crossword together. She has not been able to be closer than 2 m, separated by glass, from the man she has been married to for 60 or something years. And it breaks their hearts. Something like this pod would be great.

The CUC National Voice Team has released a statement calling on the federal government to include a Guaranteed Liveable Income program in its pandemic recovery plans. The federal government’s swift implementation of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit program (CERB) demonstrates its recognition of the need for a stable income to weather economic shocks, prioritize health and wellbeing, and provide a cushion against poverty. These actions now give us a roadmap to help us ensure all Canadian residents can live with security going forward.

I have taken this message to heart ...

It is not hard for any critical thinker, whether grounded in Marxism or any other scientific-based thinking framework, to see that conspiracies happen in the real world. However, I find reality, in general, to be much more complicated and nuanced than many (most?) believe.

Logic and facts aren’t everything, and distrust of all power is essential. So go with your gut instincts, informed by your own research, experiences, etc. Promulgate alternative cures to those who might benefit on your social. In my opinion, however, anybody who excessively plays down the threat of this virus has likely not seen its effects up close and/or is overconfident in their ability to detect truths the rest of us “can’t see.”

... I will no longer be playing down the threat of this 'biological virus'.
... my distrust of all power remains.

I sincerely hope the school boards are paying close attention to the ventilation systems in every school, otherwise I think some of our schools are going to look like the nursing homes earlier this year....this article is right on IMO.......

kids Need school for socialization, education..... parents need school for the babysitting aspect of school. So they can get back to work. and Various plans are being worked out. Masks, smaller classes or limited interactions. No big groups like assemblies. No lockers. Lunch in classroom....... but many parents also need after school care and that doesn’t work with many of the current plans Those kids are from all different grades and areas of the schools.

I'm just not sure how keeping the kids sitting at their desks all day is adding to their socialization unless just sitting with others is considered social, nor do I think it's a wise idea to keep children within the same room with other kids breathing the same stale air. If there are children with special needs within the class that find it hard to sit still it may prove challenging also.
I'm also curious how kids will be spaced farther apart at desks for social distancing when they're still dealing with the same number of children in the same limited space......where is the extra space coming from to do this?
