Binary sense .... either exclusively male or exclusively female ..... nothing in between .... no complex mixture of both ... no spectrum ..... black or white ...... no grays.....
I hope that helps...
Regards
Rita

It's a false dichotomy.

Sidebar: binary comes from the basic concept in math of base-2 where there only exists 0 & 1. It is the basis of most computer systems.

In our "1950's" concept of gender and sex, they were often described in binary terms: gender: male or female. Sexuality: straight or gay

As we open up our eyes, ears and hearts to the stories of individuals we move away from binary classifications.

@ RitaTG At the Golden Globes(if you didn't see) the winner

for the best comedy TV actor was won by Jeffrey Tambor for starring in "Transparent" Not in Canada yet.

He dedicated his trophy to the Trans community.

Transparent is about a family with a transgendered parent.

I did not know that. I keep hearing about this series but it's on Amazon's streaming service which I don't have.

The writer of the series is a woman whose own parent is transgendered - so she's lived the experience that is the substance of the show, although it is not specifically autobiographical, from what I read. Kudos to her for taking it forward.

And Jeffrey Tambor - he's a great actor, and I found his acceptance speech quite moving as he spoke about how much he has learned through this role and working with all the cast & crew.

This show is an amazing step forward. Finally a more realistic portrayal of a trans person and the associated family.
I am so grateful for this.
By the way .... I am still working on processing Jae's request to know what it feels like to be rejected by a church.
I want to get the words as right as I can ...... hopefully I will be able to answer.....

Hi RitaTG....

I am a person who thinks long about any matter before coming to any clear sense of definition. I have been asking a question about transgendered persons in my deep mind. This follows personal experience with three persons who were either changed or in the process of change. These persons were my friends and I have never had any issue over their decision or the reasons for making it. I have been as supportive and encouraging of each as I am of any person met along my way.

I wonder if you have any insight about how persons addressed their gender identities before medical technology made physical gender change possible?

Thank you for being you without reservation among us.

George

(Good story on 20/20 tonight. A transgendered married couple who are now the parents of two boys.)

Jon .... thank you ... a most excellent question :)
Simple answer ....... just treat us according to the gender we present!
And please ..... by far .... my most important label is my name....
And the less I am referred to as trans the better I feel ..... I am a woman and that is all I the label I strive for.
When talking with others and the subject comes up ..... tell them about the personal experience you have with a trans person.
You need not be an expert ..... just affirm we are real ..... and we are worth knowing ... just like anyone else :)
Hugs

Quite question Geofee ... I will do my best to try and answer....
Let us look at an analogy or two to start.....
Ok ... persons with limited mobility .... and missing limbs...
Eventually we developed better coping aids such as crutches and wooden legs...
As time went on these have become more sophisticated......
Hang on to this for a sec please....
Consider eyesight ..... at one time you just had to live with what you had and the limitations.
Eventually crude lenses were developed and as time went on these have also become quite sophisticated.
Now to tie these two together.....
The thing is that for any limitation we have always strived for better than what exists....
But we always want to attain the maximum of what it available and we live with what we can attain.
Now going back in regards to being transgender ...... we live with what we can attain and aspire to obtain the maximum that is available at the time. In our case this may be just clothing and careful grooming and taking on the role that society has for that gender at that point in time. In short ... we just want to be like any other women.
Some of us where the gender dysphoria was so intense would actually make themselves into eunuchs. That "thing" down there is a terrible source of loathing for many of us.
We do what we do now .... do as much as we can to fit the gender we know we are.
Even now .... consider different societies ...... all do not share the same access to the medical treatments available.
The thing is ..... when there is something more available that would make your body better fit your spirit you yearn for it.
We dream of the day that medical science makes it possible to go to sleep as the boy I am not and wake up as the girl I know myself to be. This is the ultimate dream ...... maybe someday.....
For now I will live with the gifts that modern medicine has give me....
I hope this helps....
Rita

Thanks Rita.

Your insights do help me understand a little better how our technical advances assist and make possible our human advances. A bit more grist for the mill.

I am aware, through my interactions with trans persons, that a fair dose of courage is part of the mix.

George

Indeed Jae .... quite a story....
How would that family be accepted in your particular church?????

That's a good question Rita. We've never encountered a situation like that. My feeling is that they'd be told that they're welcome to attend - so long as they got counseling.

Desperation is the source of a lot of courage GeoFee ......

Your church needs to get ready Jae ...... all churches do...
It will come your way .... mark my words.....
Now .... counselling ..... for what? ... to what end?????
And would you support such counselling??????
Please .... I would so very much like to know....

If someone feels that their life would be better lived with no legs (BIID), would you support amputating their legs?

The fact that escapes some is that some 1% of all births are intersex, not cisgender, in some way. That's a substantial number of people, and their unique needs deserve to be met just like the needs of the larger population.

What does not meet their needs? Arbitrarily jamming a human into ONE gender identity or the other, telling them to "stay there", and expecting this to be a functional "gender-producing" tool.

Rita, I feel you already know the answers to those questions.
