I'm surprised not much has come out from the Stampede yet at least to cancel portions.
The only thin I can really see happening is specific events, such as a scaled down rodeo that is streamed. Even that seems rather dubious. The midway, typical grandstand show (think about getting all the Young Canadians together to rehearse, yikes!), Nashville North tent, etc. should have at least come out as saying they would be cancelled a while ago.

Well, this is a good news COVID related, United Church related story ... is that okay here?(jk!) I'm so glad that the Five Oaks Centre was saved from extinction (thanks @Pinga for all your hard work on that!) and continues its work & service - this time with the migrant farm workers during their quarantine phase upon arriving in Canada.
Five Oaks becomes isolation centre for migrant farm workers

This is BC’s count since yesterday. In my region there are, by my deductions, 25 ongoing active cases.

That said...I have a looong story. Just a heads-up.

Today I went to Canadian Tire. I wanted to look at air filters. We need something like that, and they had a couple of types on sale, but only one of the sale types left. The more expensive one. I decided not to get it.

To get into the store, I waited in line outside, everyone six metres apart - so the line went all the way through the parking lot, to the road. It was raining, just drizzling at that point, and it was not very warm today. After deciding not to buy an air filter, I went past some masks. They were in a pack of 20, between $20-25. I picked up some. And some lemon Clorox wipes. I also got 2 peace lily plants. 1 for my landlords, one for me. They supposedly help clear the air.

I’m waiting in the check out line, and the floor is marked in 6ft spaces...and there’s a woman in front of me who keeps stepping half way past her line every time the line-up moves so she’s crowding closer to the person in front of her, and he can’t go ahead any further. I don’t get why people do that...why do they think that will move things along faster?

I’m punching in my non-tap pin in the debit terminal, and it doesn’t go through. I try again. Then the clerk tells me that two of the buttons are sticky or sensitive and I may be putting too many numbers in because of that... My last try...it happens again...and I’m frozen out of my account. I have to leave the stuff there...they said they will hold it while I call my bank. I try five or six times, getting cut off each time, and finally speak to a customer service person for my bank. They look into my problem, then tell me I have to go to a branch to fix it, or else wait 7-10 business days for it to be unlocked. I explain that it’s raining, I do not drive a car... I got a “sorry, ma’am, unfortunately...” So, I ride 8-10 blocks in the rain.

I get to the bank and there’s another line. When the security guard lets me in through the first set of doors, a greeter questions me about whether I have symptoms or have travelled in the past 14 days or have had known close contact with anyone who has recently travelled. ... “No.” (sigh..but that might’ve been a good time to have one of those masks I had to leave at Canadian Tire.)

I have to pass Canadian Tire to get home, so I went back. The door person remembered me and I didn’t need to wait again. At least I got to warm up a bit. I come home, finally, eat some dinner, warm up a bit but I still feel cold and soggy. So, I decide to take a hot bath. I’m in the bath and I hear my landlord’s voices. Then, my roommate knocks on the door. She has a very quiet voice and I can’t hear her over the water draining. I throw my pjs on and open the door. There are three people in a 8ft square area. They’re down there because carpenter ants have come in through the upstairs sunroom and invaded my roommate’s room. (I figure this is a good time to crack open the masks, so I brought some out, but no takers at that time. My landlady did go upstairs to get a handmade one someone gave her.)

My landlord/ step brother got busy drilling, caulking and then sawing wood pieces to plug holes or something - the saw is in his workshop. Too much commotion...I go out for a scoot and can hear the saw a block away :)ROFLMAO: ironically, this is the person who’s sensitive to household noise). My poor roommate was just sitting on the couch for two hours waiting for them. They were going to make up a bed for her upstairs (our couch is narrow and short, not comforable to sleep all night on (I learned once), if they didn’t get it taken care of. Supposedly they have more to do tomorrow. I mixed up some peppermint Castile soap in a spray bottle for my roommate...Hopefully that sprayed around the room, and on the wall/ ceiling corner they came in from will help repel any that may still be in there. Eek. My landlords kind of have to be down here to do that though. Chances they have active covid are quite slim. Chances of ant infestation keeping my roommate up at night until the problem is resolved - much greater, and therefore a health and safety risk of its own.

So far, no ants in my room or in the kitchen. I do get the odd spider, though.

Sounds like a rough day. I like to keep at least 2 cards on me when shopping. We've been locked out at times and with parking some of them don't like certain cards at least. Not specific to pandemic though and there are occasions where I don't even bring my wallet, just ID and 1 card.

I only have 1 card.

I only have 1 card.
I like having at least 1 totally separate from all the main bank. My parents totally got locked out for a while with everything connected to a bank - the bank denies it but it looked like an insider was trying to steal money. Something to do with the exact same account number but different branch number and withdrawal amounts that were close to the amounts in the accounts. Stuff was locked down while the bank sorted it out. I got a 2nd credit card when my student account refused to up my limit when I was in grad school to pay tuition in a reasonable way. Came in handy, Chemguy had issues in Whitecourt with that same bank and cards, they kept sending him ones that weren't working.

It's cool to see wildlife coming to urban places. I'm not sure I'd feel that way if I saw a rat in my backyard. I know there are some around here though
The deer are cool. They just saunter around the neighbourhood like they own the place, and stop and look at you as if to say, “Excuse us, but it’s not polite to stare. Rude humans.” I’ve meet a couple of pretty cool raccoons (that didn’t get too close. Squirrels are cute...rabbits are cute...rats, not so much. In Vancouver, there were skunks...deceptively “cute”. I don’t think they’re a problem on the Island.

That sounds like a rough day. I hope the ant problem is getting fixed, though I would think an exterminator to get rid of them is needed. Just filling the hole means they are still there just eating the wood somewhere else

He’s quite a handyman when he puts his mind to it. He said he’s going to remove a piece of the wall and get right in there. They have ants upstairs above her, in the sunroom they built - and he seems to have done some research. Plus, they probably don’t want to put my roommate in a hotel...or me, in case I had to vacate too (though I have somewhere else I could stay for a couple of days).

They decided to get exterminators to do the whole house just in case. We have a few days to get ready for them. Then I have to be out for 4 hrs in the morning. Not sure where I'm going to go at that time, for that long, so I hope the weather's nice.

Masks are becoming more common around here. When I was out for my walk today, probably 50% of the people I saw were wearing masks. Almost without exception, those wearing masks seemed to think physical distancing is no longer necessary.

It was the individuals without masks who were taking care to give others a wide berth on the sidewalks. Fortunately that is easy to do on most of the streets around here because we have wide boulevards.

I had my sewing machine out the other day (doing long overdue hemming of some drapes) and so I thought I would make some masks while I was at it. Found a pretty good pattern, used a couple of old pillowcases for fabric and some elastic I had in my stash (hope it stays stretchy for a while!) Turned out pretty well. It was my neighbour's birthday yesterday, so when I took over some baking for her I also took two masks - she was thrilled! Not your run of the mill birthday gift!!

Many more people are wearing them around here too P3. I didn't have any until yesterday - but I guess it's good to have one or two on hand in case some stores require now require them. I wouldn't wear one on a walk outdoors tho - seems unnecessary.

I went out for a walk. Only saw 1 person wearing a mask here. I was disappointed by most of the bikers, they were the ones not even attempting to give distance, pedestrians should take the priority on paths IMO. At least in this area, keeping distance isn't too difficult, as long as one doesn't mind getting their feet wet as the grass is pretty waterlogged from the recent melt.
