I’m not crazy. I’m not making myself crazy. This is an uncomfortable situation for just about everybody on the planet. The world is f***ing crazy right now. If you want to pretend otherwise, that’s your choice. If it’s too upsetting, don’t read the news...you have permission, in fact full support, to stay home and read a good book or 10. Or binge watch Netflix. If that’s what you need to do, do that.

I am concerned and asking honest questions. I’m not going to live in a protective bubble, figuratively, even though we are all being forced into one physically. I’m not afraid, or hysterical or crazy thank you very much. I’ve gotten used to realizing how f***ed up the world is - a long time ago - so I can handle fear and still stay informed. And I’m Social distancing, staying home as much as possible (even though being outdoors as much as I can is probably safer under my circumstances) and washing hands and disinfecting counters and door handles, scooter and walker handles, and my phone, constantly, to protect myself and others from getting sick, as best I can.

An issue with having everything available for testing is that the technology really changes with time. Just did a quick google for SARS and testing and this paper was one that came up - The Laboratory Diagnosis of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome: Emerging Laboratory Tests for an Emerging Pathogen
PCR has advanced greatly since then. Sequencing tech in general has.

How much do we want to spend to have ready for various disasters? Especially for things that have short lifespans or become out of date?

Well the government is willing to shut down everything, and give copious amounts of dollars and credits so money is relative anyway. They can spend exactly as much as they want to for whatever they think is a priority. They print the stuff. I think this crisis shows just how fast financial priorities can be rearranged...for better or for worse. The point is, money is elusive. They can create enough money for everything if they wanted to. Or, just do away with money and the need for it.

I came back to post this:

While governments do “print” money, in that they run the mint where actual money is printed, that is not what they are doing now

trudeau in his idiocy , over spent during the past four good years and ran up deficits way to high. Now, they have a serious problem and no extra money so they are borrowing. Big time. Honestly they need to Otherwise everyone out of a job, and those closures were ordered by governments, would be homeless and starving

but we will be paying for this for a long time

they were un prepared. While we watched trump ignore advice I had assumed Trudeau was on the ball about this. He wasn’t and he needs to own that. We watched China lock down. We know that China is a government loath to own up to the truth. The WHO seemed to be very slow to order China to do anything. And we sent our stock pile of equipment to China. So that wasn’t particularly bright.

so after being unprepared, they initially offered minuscule help. They stepped up by borrowing tons. They had no choice

And I expect there will be a commission to review this as there was with SARS. What went wrong. What went right. What to do about it for the future

I expect either a total depression, or worldwide debt forgiveness and reset and departure from neoliberal capitalism. I’d prefer the latter....but it’s not up to me. I think we need a whole different economic system.

Why does this matter? Because although Hungary is a small country, it is one whose creeping authoritarianism is widely admired. In early February, I wrote about the rapturous reception that Orbán had received at a conference of self-declared nationalist and far-right intellectuals—American, Israeli, and European—in Rome. I fully expect his tactics to be imitated: Anybody who disagrees with my emergency laws is trying to spread illness is something we will hear again. So is Whichever mistakes we made in the past, we are not responsible for them now.
Yes, absolutely, countries with totalitarian regime will use anything in anyway for their power. Turkey did that completely without needing Covid. The difference between one regime and for example Canada, is that in one country, journalists get killed and thrown into prison for speaking out and in the other not so.
For example, North Korea doesn’t have any cases of Covid. I am sure its because communism is immune to viruses.

Radical communism ... when communication dropped over the edge of awareness.

If you don't know ... it didn't happen! Then there is this mental allusion ... that a medium stance might allow us to look at all 3 poles ...

Is that an outside chance to reality? The life of quantum science ... at the very least dicey ... like life itself a compost of laws and quanta! Meme sum.

If stuck particularly in the present ... and ignoring history of the story ... is there no dream ... no abstract form? Such are strange unseen things ... we are directed to have some openness ... heart and mind ... and other things that might be severely bound up ... Bung'd!

The Wizard of ID ... may drive you to abnormal laughter if you look at cartoon 'n the mirage! The illusion of power as logos goes down in the dark ... white meets the dark or vice versa ... assists to envision two types of white and two types of dark in a dynamic ... one may shift to red and the other yellowed ... the enigma of fragile life ...

Who here has ever been tested for the flu? That is - you were in your normal health - knew you had come down with a bad cold or flu - they were going around - and your doctor actually sent you for lab-work to see what kind of virus it was (when s/he had seen several cold and flu patients already and you were obviously one of them)? Be honest. Has anyone actually been sent for flu or cold tests?
Retirement and nursing homes test for flu outbreaks often.....

The warning is about using a crisis to consolidate power. Orban was bad already but now he has an emergency to excuse himself and rally people around (to paraphrase the article "if you speak against my emergency orders you are spreading the virus") we're already seeing that here.

Wait, didn't trump Jr use that skittles metaphor for something else?
Yes he did. it went viral. He made the same argument about Syrian refugees. I know you didn't mean to @Northwind but that image is already a virus itself...cross association with the image is the danger (mutation?). The medium is the message and all that - the medium being a picture of skittles. That's how propaganda works. I assume it came through Facebook.

So what about the refugees now? Nobody cares about helping them anymore. Nobody cares about anything else. They're still dying in droves risking their lives everyday and have been for years but now nations are rallying around a virus. And the numbers are not clear. The death rate is not clear. If way more people are getting it but barely have symptoms or symptoms of a common cold that they recover from - and not a lot of testing is being done - then the picture is not accurate. The percentages are not accurate. There are so many risks in life but they ground life for the public to a halt over this particular one.

Kimmio you rant on and on. I asked you a question several posts back. Please answer this:

What can anyone do about things right now? What would you suggest? I want

So, you don't like the Skittles metaphor. Too bad. I am choosing to follow the measures because I value my health. I also value the health of those around me and of the community. I will respond to the social justice issues in a way I choose, and a way that suits my style. I will not be engaging in a spiral argument here.

The skittles image started as an anti-refugee argument and it's now mutated and no refugees are being let in.

We still need to wash our hands and social distance. I think we need to be collectively demanding better testing and clearer numbers. We don't even know if your skittles argument is accurate. It may be way less if this has been going on since December/ January and most people have just had colds that were not reported or recorded anywhere.
