Why do I feel so Jaerd ...????

Maybe a JCaes Syndrome! Where some interpreted that lighter thinking had to stop to eliminate the Pied Satyrs ... asis in the courts?

Tyrants were pis 'd ...

Yeah, plus it sounds like a fair number of people live in one country and work/do work in another regularly between Italy and Switzerland.

That's a big issue with the spring break folks. They're all returning to other places. I wondered about people in Detroit-Windsor who work across the border. There's probably people in parts of BC and other provinces that do the same. So many variables.

Not just work. When we were in Switzerland, the Swiss told us they often cross the borders just to shop and go out for the night because Italy and Germany are much cheaper than Switzerland.

I wondered about people in Detroit-Windsor who work across the border.

And Sarnia-Port Huron, too. In fact, the UU fellowship in Sarnia also services Port Huron (I preached there once). I imagine those people are all either teleworking or off work.

I talked to my ex in the middle of the night. He's in Central-Eastern Europe. The same thing is happening there. In fact, they've been in a state-of-emergency mode for about 2 weeks - even though there are only 20 confirmed cases in his country. He and his family (he lives with his senior parents - same age as mine but more "elderly" - and nephew) are staying home. He and his parents have underlying health conditions - and his 20 yr old nephew is going out shopping for necessary items. They implemented rationing in the stores weeks ago. I would expect that there. It was more authoritarian there already. But it's everywhere now.

He told me something interesting. I asked him if he was freaked out (he's a bit prone to anxiety when there are sudden changes - reacts differently from me - and I was concerned). He said, "Yes and no. It gets frustrating and everybody wonders and worries a little bit about where this could go. But at the same time, this country has been through war. So not having to do anything, and nobody out - and everywhere is in the same boat. It's kind of peaceful." There too, they're following instructions in hopes of getting this over with sooner not later.

I was pissed off for unrelated/ related reasons...
It is all relative.

I am pissed off as well.

Who are the 'they' that I am angry at ... without naming names?

It is the business practices of 'the corporations' that have brought us to this.

They have made extra profits by stealing land from the indigenous and degrading the biosphere.

Now everyone in the world threatened by this pandemic are paying the price many times over.

I am pissed off at 'the experts' in tiny specialisms – like how to make money on financial market shares in this pandemic.

I am pissed off even more at 'the rich' who are retreating to 'bunkers' with well stocked wine cellars.

One has to wonder ... is the world of 'the super rich' also collapsing?

Collapsing for these predators (elite) - not just arrangements for economic activity - but ways of making sense of the world - and the reasons they regard themselves as different from and superior to us others when they are clearly not?

There is a crack a crack in everything ... that's how the light gets in.

In any case the specific conditions of every person’s life is always unique and each of us must manage risk according to their own judgement.

The point to make is of the need to self isolate and/or practice social distancing ...

At the same time as maintaining 'economic' activity as best we can.

There will be no one size fits all ways of doing it and each person will have to improvise during this crisis.

At the same time ...

The ideal outcome is that improvisations will lead to fundamental changes that start the re-localisation of economic activity, changes in the food system and land use – and in general “degrowth”.

Forget about a “return to normal” – the normal was unsustainable and this is the result.

I think we need a new normal. But I would still like to go to coffee shops, small grocers, I still think humans need some arts and entertainment (both creating and relaxing to observe), family and community gatherings, playgrounds, schools for kids to learn and interact with others, to be able to shake hands, and to hug people who need a hug. (((hugs))) doesn't really work quite the same.

And...what bothers me that people have stopped talking about...is there is still an exodus of refugees from war torn and devestated places - with no refuge. And the European countries that we are using as examples of how to handle this, have been the most xenophobic, cruel and racist about turning people away long before this. In fact, some of them used the refugees in crisis already, as scapegoats for the virus and for early rounds of closing borders. (Remember that when looking at the actual numbers, demographics, and threat of death from the virus). You won't hear Trudeau saying cruel things about refugees...nevertheless he is following the lead of behaviour by countries who do.

I wonder how many have died basically walking up through Mexico if they even make it - and getting turned away? Or trying to get through Greece? Or cross illegally through the rest of Europe? Probably far, far more than have died from covid 19 - probably far more in number everyday - before covid 19, and far more now.

Here's a positive article about Dr. Hinshaw, Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health - TAIT: Dear Dr. Hinshaw
"Dr. Deena Hinshaw (Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health) delivers a health update while wearing a dress emblazoned with the periodic table of elements. A British Columbia clothing maker named Smoking Lily has seen a surge in demand for the dress and is ramping up production of the Point Grey Periodic Table dress."

Many have sent Smoking Lily screen grabs of Hinshaw wearing at least five Smoking Lily garments in the past week.

“She probably didn’t think that when she went and became a doctor that she’d actually become a fashion model for us.”

Many of the messages Smoking Lily has received included praise for Hinshaw’s handling of the crisis, such as:

“Smart lady wearing a smart dress.”

Smoking Lily tries to buy most of its supplies locally, then within BC, then Canada. But we’re not hard asses about it, after all its a big world we live in, with lots of beautiful goods. We use mostly bamboo, eucalyptus, dead stock (left over stock from larger companies) and vintage fabrics found on our travels. We use only nontoxic inks in our print room and work to be good stewards to the earth. Smoking Lily’s goal is to be a zero fabric waste company, to make use of every last piece of fabric we bring in. Our kid’s line is made entirely out of leftover bits from our other projects, as are many of our accessories.

We strive to make clothing that you will wear over and over again, that is earth friendly and affordable. The small scale workmanship of our products, our positive outlook and our desire to be comfortable yet stylish can be attributed to where we live. From concept to pattern drafting to sewing and printing we do it all in our studio in downtown Victoria, Canada. Viva Victoria.

But they are not 'cheap' ...

I have a lot of organic material scraps and have just inherited an Antique treadle sewing machine ... hmm.

If you can make something like that, go for it! I do not have that talent.

I sewed organic children's clothing for my daughter's 'pure essentials' online store some years ago ... she closed it down and I was left with quite a bit of organic materials ... bamboo buttons and basting and thread included. Having ability and materials so far has not transferred to production ... but the times they are a changin!.

Whoa. Of all the countries that could put pressure on the IOC around postponing due to COVID, who would have expected it to be us?

Given the Scenario Narratives - Canada is going LOCK STEP ?

China’s government was not the only one that took extreme measures to protect its citizens from risk and exposure.

During the pandemic, national leaders around the world flexed their authority and imposed airtight rules and restrictions, from the mandatory wearing of face masks to body-temperature checks at the entries to communal spaces like train stations and supermarkets. Even after the pandemic faded, this more authoritarian control and oversight of citizens and their activities stuck and even intensified.

In order to protect themselves from the spread of increasingly global problems — from pandemics and transnational terrorism to environmental crises and rising poverty — leaders around the world took a firmer grip on power.

At first, the notion of a more controlled world gained wide acceptance and approval. Citizens willingly gave up some of their sovereignty — and their privacy — to more paternalistic states in exchange for greater safety and stability. Citizens were more tolerant, and even eager, for top-down direction and oversight, and national leaders had more latitude to impose order in the ways they saw fit.

In developed countries, this heightened oversight took many forms: biometric IDs for all citizens, for example, and tighter regulation of key industries whose stability was deemed vital to national interests. In many developed countries, enforced cooperation with a suite of new regulations and agreements slowly but steadily restored both order and, importantly, economic growth.

Across the developing world, however, the story was different — and much more variable.

Top-down authority took different forms in different countries, hinging largely on the capacity, caliber, and intentions of their leaders.

At this point we are responding to an emerging/emergency situation. It's good to look at what lead up to it. We still need to take the measures to stop it. Here's hoping people are not willing to forfeit freedoms and such permanently.
