How do you figure the 1% are losing money?

I find that easy to figure. Think cruise ships in isolation and feeding passengers past the date they paid for.
Airlines with idle planes as people cancel trips.
Hotels/resorts/stores/restaurants with few customers.
Entertainment venues shut down and losing ticket sales (stadiums, theatres, etc..)

A pandemic has been declared but ...
  • Not for the 24,600 who die every day from unnecessary starvation
  • Not for 3,000 children who die every day from preventable malaria
  • Not for not for the 10,000 people who die every day because they are denied publicly-funded healthcare
  • Not for 100's of Venezuelans or Iranians who die every day because North America's blockades denies them life-saving medicines
  • Not for 100's of mostly children bombed or starved to death every day in Yemen
  • Not for the ongoing colonization of countless indigenous peoples world wide
will it stop the war supplies and profiteering by permission of North America for all or any of the above?

O course not. Those things are also badly in need of attention and fixes. Fertilizing the orchard doesn't improve the health of the cauliflower crop either. Putting necessary menstrual supplies in schools won't protect the boys from mumps.

If you are constantly cognizant of these items you are not as well off as those suffering the Black Velvet Band Age ... and blinding effect of emotions with naivete ... that is ignorant of the loss of intellectualism! We never see it going as an unconscious loss ... consider the sensationalism of dropping off into sleep! Thoughts slip ...

Sing a song of love that hides the intelligence buried within ... expect pokes, smudges, and other shafts ... deep wellings up ... Jacobean in nature ... maybe even hick ease ... that should be hidden from elders!

Tis a red neck item of curiosity ... you may be questioned about where such things come from ... seniors forget ... I don't remember the last one ... perhaps in the Last Post NG! The fence may move ... as the barrier is dynamic ...

I have to ask...why does this seem to be more of a panic than SARS and MERS and h1N1 (remember "swine flu"? it started with deaths of younger adults in Mexico and that was odd)? I do not recall near this much fearful hype though. Again, I remember concern, but not this reaction from governments. Why? Anyone else feel the same?
Perhaps media influencing us to "be afraid" of almost everything these days? Perhaps we learned something from those past events? Not enough yet - but perhaps something that changes response?

And the stock market decline.

I guess Trudeau and his wife are self isolating for Covid 19.....hmm. Seems his wife is showing symptoms. They are being tested ......with no results as of yet.
First Tom Hanks now this.
Doesn't this virus know who these people are??? :ROFLMAO:

Trudeau in isolation will likely be hailed as a good first step by some. I wouldn't be in that group, but I see their snide comments online from time to time.

I am still wondering if they have tested Trump. He has had a couple opportunities to be exposed.

I wondered about that too....but I'm sure he's had his plane scrubbed down and his staff are constantly cleaning....BUT he's in that age group.

That's the thing. Trudeau is younger than me and pretty healthy. Even if he gets it, he'll probably be one of the "self-isolate at home" cases. Trump strikes me as someone likely to end up in hospital.

One big difference is that not every flu case and flu death is reported in the news. In fact, it's rarely more than locally reported, if it spreads through a local nursing home, or a superbug in a hospital. Even then, not usually front page news. We were never told of everytime Tom Hanks or Sophie Gregoire Trudeau caught a bug. So, that makes it seem worse, too. If there was reporting on flu numbers everyday, we'd have a different view to this situation. Not that I want that adding to the fear factor either - just saying, I think the perspective is skewed and there's more reason for it than public health. Like I said...a big social experiment on government control, and economic recovery.

It feels like some kind of virus Olympics to see which country does a better job of stopping a virus that is not life threatening to most people. Each country is it's own petrie dish and they are looking at which variables work on which level, ie. Authoritarian control vs self monitoring and reasonable measures, economic cooperation vs isolationism. What's going on in Italy should give people pause - but we're too caught up in the narrative of some deadly viral locomotive running through the world. When, like most viruses, it's not a big threat to most people.

To deal with the impact of the new coronavirus epidemic ...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday announced the creation of a Canadian dollar 1 billion fund.

"It will provide funding to provinces and territories to help them prepare for any possibility and to mitigate risks to Canadians"

Canada has had one death so far from 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and has nearly 100 confirmed cases.

The fund will be used to reinforce Canada's provincial health systems.

The fund will be used to provide financial aid to Canadians forced to undergo isolation because of the epidemic.

Trudeau said ...

"No one should have to worry about their job if they have to be quarantined."
" No employer should feel like they have to lay off a worker because of the virus."
" We can support you."
" And we will."
"We are already preparing to do more, if need be."

So:

In a bid to support businesses should the economy experience tightening credit conditions ...

Ottawa will boost investment in federal lending agencies, such as Business Development Bank of Canada and Export Development Canada.

Easy access to credit would be made available to businesses facing a short-term cash crunch.

The government would work "to protect jobs and to be there for businesses."

Some C$275 million will go to research on medical countermeasures, including vaccines.

And WHO will pay this debt back?

WHO cares? Governments print the money. Goes to show money's an illusion of numbers and smoke and mirrors, manipulated by the powerful, no?

...the difference, it just occurred to me, is that past viral pandemics were not so political.
It does really bother me that some parties are making the management of this into partisan fodder. This is NOT the time for partisanship - it is a time when good governance & welfare of the nation (world?) should take clear priority - if we are mature enough - which for some seems not to be the case.
