Luke 16:19-21GW

A Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who wore expensive clothes. Every day was like a party to him. 20 There was also a beggar named Lazarus who was regularly brought to the gate of the rich man’s house. 21 Lazarus would have eaten any scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Lazarus was covered with sores,[a] and dogs would lick them.

22 “One day the beggar died, and the angels carried him to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 He went to hell, where he was constantly tortured. As he looked up, in the distance he saw Abraham and Lazarus. 24 He yelled, ‘Father Abraham! Have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue. I am suffering in this fire.’

25 “Abraham replied, ‘Remember, my child, that you had a life filled with good times, while Lazarus’ life was filled with misery. Now he has peace here, while you suffer. 26 Besides, a wide area separates us. People couldn’t cross it in either direction even if they wanted to.’

27 “The rich man responded, ‘Then I ask you, Father, to send Lazarus back to my father’s home. 28 I have five brothers. He can warn them so that they won’t end up in this place of torture.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets. Your brothers should listen to them!’

30 “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! If someone comes back to them from the dead, they will turn to God and change the way they think and act.’

31 “Abraham answered him, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone comes back to life.’”

unsafe says -----So we see in this Parable -----the rich verses the poor and heaven verses hell and who goes to each place and how they get there and what happens when the person is there ------

So we see the rich man lives a lavished life while a poor man who is named Lazarus who is covered in sores stands at the rich mans gate hoping to get some craps to eat from the rich mans table ------

So Spiritually this tells us what-----

That being a rich person can give one material satisfaction and security while they are here on this earth and can blind the mind as to what their real purpose in this life is for ----all the rich see is themselves and their possessions they are blinded to the needs of others -----they are poor Spiritually as they are disconnected from God and they have no concept of major issue -----

The poor are in need and are destitute and their only hope is to rely on others to give them what is needed to survive on this earth ---- they rely on the charity of the richer people to supply their needs -----this beggar Lazarus in this parable was not Spiritually poor he was Spiritually connected to God so he in fact was poor of all material and financial wealth of this earth ---but here is the thing-- he was Spiritually Rich which is far more Richer than all the rich man has in his possession -------

We will all die one day -----

So the rich man's possessions will fade away from him and go to someone else -----and because he is Spiritually dead ----he looses everything in his end ----- all his material and his chance at eternal life ----so this man dies TWICE ---and is now spiritually where the beggar was while he was alive on this earth in torment ------

The beggar on the other hand ----what did he loose ----he had no material in this world to loose ----- but he had everything to gain in his end -----he had eternal life ----he is now living in luxury ----he has everything he ever wants there is no more begging or scraping or sores or pain or suffering -----he is free from his torment ------

unsafe says --So what happened here ---They switched places when they dies -------

so we see in verses 22-24 ----22 “One day the beggar died, and the angels carried him to be with Abraham. I am suffering in this fire.’

unsafe says -----the beggar went with Abraham and was in peace ----the rich man went to hell and was in torture

So we see the rich man now begging for mercy to have a cool drink as he is suffering in his torment ------but to no avail ---he cries are not answered as he had his chance to do the right thing while he was alive and wealthy ---in stead he lavished himself in his wealth and possessions in great greed ----- he even tries to get God to send Lazarus back so his brother's can do the right thing so they don't end up where he is ---but again refused ------

unsafe says ---these 2 verses 30-31 are very important people ------

30 “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! If someone comes back to them from the dead, they will turn to God and change the way they think and act.’

31 “Abraham answered him, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone comes back to life.’”

unsafe says
---- here in Luke Jesus is still ALIVE and the Law still stands ----and what verse 31 is saying needs to be heeded to today as well -----no one can come back from the dead to tell us what either heaven or hell is like ------all we have is God's Holy Scriptures which describes them for us so we either believe them or we don't -----

So if we won't listen to what God tells us in His word about hell and heaven and who goes there and how we end up in each place then we have no excuse when we end up in torment instead of peace ------

Great lesson in this Parable today -----hope many take heed to it ------God has done all He can do ----we choose now ----Receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour is the only way to Life today ------the Law brought Death cause no man could keep it -----All unbelievers are still under the Law which brings the Curse ----Sin and Death ---the only way out of the Law is Jesus in our hearts -----

What do you make of 1Peter 4:6? Jesus proclaiming the gospel in hell to even those who are dead?

Waterfall ---your quote -----What do you make of 1Peter 4:6? Jesus proclaiming the gospel in hell to even those who are dead?

unsafe says ---better ask paradox3 if she wants to get into 1Peter quotes here on the Luke thread before we get into quotes from another Book ------ -we will be kicked out ----get her OK and then I will have a look at your scripture here ---

Parodox do we have your permission?

@unsafe and @Waterfall

Please start a new thread to discuss the ideas from 1 Peter. I have no objection to quick tangents but this seems like it could spark a more lengthy discussion.

Many thanks for asking.

I just noticed the connection between "raising the dead as a way to convince people you're the real thing" and the name of the poor man, Lazarus, 'coincidentally' the same name as Jesus' friend, who Jesus did raise from death, even making so big a show of dawdling on the way to rescue him that his sister was worried about the "stench"...

An interesting thing about this parable is that it actually names one of the characters. Off the top of my head I can't think of another parable that does this.

Recently we have seen characters such as the woman with the coins, the rich man, the prodigal son, the older son and the dishonest manager. None of them have been given names.

It is an interesting piece. However we have no idea if Luke is familiar with the story of that other Lazarus as he only appears in John's Gospel. It might be a sideways reference...it might be a meaningless coincidence.

I have always believed that the old covenant still stands with the people of Israel. Is this what you mean?
Indeed. The problem is that some Christians claim that in Christ the old covenant has been set aside or superseded

paradox3 ----your quote -----So your view would be that the Law still stands until the resurrection of Jesus? Then we have a new covenant which replaces the old?

unsafe says ----This is what the scriptures says ----------the Law and the curse is for unbelievers and still stands todays -----all unbelievers remain sinners in God's eyes and are away from Him ----Jesus brought in the New Covenant of Grace for all who receive Him only -----The curse is still in place for unbelievers ---the Blessings come under Grace only ------

The Jews today who have not received Jesus and still believe their Messiah will come are sinners and are still under the Law of Moses and are under the Curse of the Law ---which is death

Really? So, put another way, would you say that you are on board with the idea of death to the Jews?

I am extremely uncomfortable with statements that Jews today are sinners or unbelievers. Or under the curse of death. I have asked the moderators to review your post.

Her post is biblical Jesus is only savior it's not only for the Jewish unbelievers but for every unbeliever that lives

If I am banned it will be for telling the truth ------Jesus keep telling the Jews their time was running out for them for them to believe who is was and why he came and that is scriptural -----and I will always post truth ------
