Jesus' comments on who his family were would have been scandalous to those who heard him. After all, many of them would have taken great pride in being children of Abraham. And family lineage (see the 2 lists of ancestors in Matthew and Luke, for examples) determined your place ion society. One thing Jesus seems to indicate here is it doesn't matter who begat you. In God's household all relationships are made new; you are on equal footing with all of God's children.

All of God's children are on equal footing. Not everyone, however, is a child of God. Many are children of the devil.

All of God's children are on equal footing. Not everyone, however, is a child of God. Many are children of the devil.

At the risk of derailing the Luke thread (which I tend to follow, but rarely jump in). Such a statement is deeply concerning.

Who, pray-tell, is a child of the devil? Do you know? How? I have had evangelicals tell me Matthew was a child of the devil - his life an indication of the sure presence of the devil on earth because of his disability. In my opinion their theology is a clear indication of evil.

We are all children of God. Full stop.

John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,

James 4:7
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Just to name a few

We are all children of God.

No we are all God's Creation Period -----since the fall of mankind ----we are born Sinners ----an d we are away from God according to Scripture and according to scripture unless you receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour by following the protocol of how the scripture says you need to we remain Sinners and we are under the god of this world ----who is Satan ----according to Scripture -----

1John 3:1-10 tells you this and John 8:42-47--one does not have to believe what the scripture says ---but that will not change what the scripture says ---it just means that one doesn't believe what the scripture says -----and if one doesn't believe the scripture then one has to talk to God about there disbelief not the people who believe what the scripture says ------

Todays Scripture ------Lule 8:19-25

Luke 8:19-25 (GW)
The True Family of Jesus

19 His mother and his brothers came to see him. But they couldn’t meet with him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside. They want to see you.”

21 He answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do what God’s word says.”

Jesus Calms the Sea
22 One day Jesus and his disciples got into a boat. He said to them, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they started out. 23 As they were sailing along, Jesus fell asleep.

A violent storm came across the lake. The boat was taking on water, and they were in danger. 24 They went to him, woke him up, and said, “Master! Master! We’re going to die!”

Then he got up and ordered the wind and the waves to stop. The wind stopped, and the sea became calm. 25 He asked them, “Where is your faith?”
Frightened and amazed, they asked each other, “Who is this man? He gives orders to the wind and the water, and they obey him!”

unsafe says ----we see in verse 19-21 that Jesus has a visit from His family and we see that Jesus says they hear and do the Word -So Jesus is describing True Disciples here -----All True Disciples Will Believe and Do what God says In His Word -----

Verses 22-25 ====Shows us what Faith is like when it is not Grounded and Rooted in God and His Word -----it is Faith that wavers like the waves on the sea -----it is an unstable Faith that allows fear --doubt and unbelief to creep in and this takes away our confidence in relying on God and His Word to strengthen us when we need it ------Jesus was asleep He had that peace that is beyond human understanding -----the Disciples were in fear and panic of sinking and dying -----

This also show us that many will call on God when in fear and panic or when they have an incident of being afraid of dying -----they totally ignore God and His Word all the rest of the time and expect God to help them in their crisis situation and complain when they don't think God helped them -----

unsafe says ---Here again we notice that Jesus gives a solid Command ---He is not wishy washy in His ordering of the calming of the sea-True Christians need to speak God Kind of Faith with confidence and authority to their situations and troubles not be wishy washy in their approach -----

The Bible says we are not to cast away our confidence ------

Summary: Luke 8: 26 - 39

Jesus and the disciples arrive by boat at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. Jesus is met by a man with demons. This man lived in the tombs and wore no clothes. He had been bound with chains and shackles but he would break the chains and be driven by the demons into the wilds.

Jesus commands the unclean spirit to come out of the man. His name is Legion, for he had many demons.

The demons beg Jesus not to order them back into the abyss. Nearby there is herd of swine feeding on the hillside and the demons beg to enter the swine. Jesus gives them permission and the swine rush down the steep bank into the lake and drown.

The swineherds run off to tell everyone what has happened. The people see the man from whom the demons came out sitting at the feet of Jesus, fully clothed and in his right mind. They are afraid and ask Jesus to leave them. The man who was healed begs to go with Him, but Jesus sends him away. "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you," Jesus says.

Reflection: Luke 8: 26 - 39

When we talked about this story on the earlier gospel threads, there was much discussion about the demon-possessed pigs running down the hillside.

Did the demons perish along with the pigs? Some of our posters thought the demons would then be free to possess someone else.

The crowds respond with fear to the miraculous healing of the man who had been tormented. They want Jesus to go away. Why would they have been afraid, I wonder?

Interesting that the man wants to go with Jesus & the disciples but Jesus sends him back to his home. Does the poor fellow still have a home, I wonder? After all, he has been living naked in the tombs and breaking free into the wilds on occasion.

"Declare what God has done for you," Jesus says here. So it seems that some were called to follow Him around the countryside and cities. But others were called to continue their ordinary lives in gratitude and witness.

It strikes me as the kind of minor detail Jesus doesn't usually worry about. :nerd:

But you could be right. Maybe the man's family was grieving the loss of their kinsman and would have welcomed him back with open arms.

Maybe. Also of note - Jesus, being God, was omniscient. He knew whether the man's home was still in existence.

Thoughts on Luke 8:26-29...

They sailed down from the deep sea to the land. There wasn't tempest's indication, and they had no difficulty about putting in near the shore.

Two demoniacs approached Jesus, the more violent of whom Dr. Luke speaks of.

Demons tortured this demoniac. Their power over him made him spurn shame; for a time he had worn no clothes. He also preferred to live in the tombs on the lakeshore. He resembled a beast.

When he saw Jesus, he screamed and threw himself down at his feet and begged that Jesus shouldn't torment him. That was a demon speaking.

The devil knows who Jesus is, was aware of it during Jesus' lifetime, and did all in his power to frustrate Jesus' work. If Jesus had been a mere man, Satan could've conquered him.

But he was God's Son, and so himself God. He had the power to let the last judgment upon the devils begin at any time, to chain them in darkness and keep them there.

Satan and his angels have been condemned by God, they're reserved in chains under darkness unto Judgment Day. That they're excluded from heaven's bliss' for them a hell-torture-species.

In the meantime, however, Satan's loosed for a season. Chains are upon Satan and his demons. And on Judgment Day they'll enter their prison and feel the fire's tortures which's prepared for them.

For Jesus was about to command that the unclean spirit should come out of the man, hence fear's cry.

When the devils seized the man in their grip, efforts at keeping him under guard were fruitless. Fetters and chains were gauze strips in his hands. The victim was driven into the deserts, and could not be held.

Thoughts on Luke 8:30-33...

Jesus asked the man his name. The man being the demons' victim, answered that his name was Legion, 1000s of demons having taken possession of him.

The devils were growing restive, knowing that their time for torturing this man was over.

There was a swine herd feeding on the mountainside, near where Jesus had landed, and the devils begged Jesus to let them enter into the animals.

When Jesus had given permission, the devils possessed the swine.

The pigs, taken with fright, bolted down the steeo rock face overhanging the lake, leaped down into the waves below, and were drowned, dying for lack of air.

☆ If Satan can't destroy people, he attacks animals. Pray for your pets. Satan can ruin God's works only with God's okay. Such visitations are God's visitations, by means of which God chastises and calls to repentance. ☆

.

demons or unclean spirits are disembodied spirits, they did not die when the pigs drowned, they move on looking for another host to manifest their personalities though, they are also, depending on the spirit, what the bible calls Powers and Principalities in higher places. It's called possession because of the spirits overtaking a host body and suppressing one's own God-given personality.

demons cannot just possess anyone, we have to give them legal ground to our being, this is done through various sins, much through heavy addictions that alter the mind, but mostly through occult means that are ways of entering the spiritual realm without the Protection of Gods Holy Spirit. That is why its a no no according to the bible to do things like witchcraft, fortune telling, crystal gazer, clairvoyant, psychic, spiritualist, medium, palmist, deviation, things like that.

Jesus being the Only Begotten Son of The Most High God , has the legal right & authority to cast out demons. Jesus proves this not only in Luke:8 , but throughout His MInistry by word & deed. Then the Ultimate Miracle Jesus raises Himself from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit, Proving to the multitude Who he is , then Taking His accomplishments of the Cross that was done for Humanity to keep our spirits clean from sin and finally Gave humanity Legal authority what we call today Power of attorney, that in His Name, and HIs name alone, to remove unclean or demonic spirits as well.

Jesus is the Only way, the Truth & the LIfe.

my answer to Luke 8

Todays Scripture ----

Luke 8:26-39 GW
Jesus Cures a Demon-Possessed Man

26 They landed in the region of the Gerasenes across from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped out on the shore, a certain man from the city met him. The man was possessed by demons and had not worn clothes for a long time. He would not stay in a house but lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he shouted, fell in front of him, and said in a loud voice, “Why are you bothering me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you not to torture me!” 29 Jesus ordered the evil spirit to come out of the man. (The evil spirit had controlled the man for a long time. People had kept him under guard. He was chained hand and foot. But he would break the chains. Then the demon would force him to go into the desert.)

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

He answered, “Legion [Six Thousand].” (Many demons had entered him.) 31 The demons begged Jesus not to order them to go into the bottomless pit.

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding on a mountainside. The demons begged Jesus to let them enter those pigs. So he let them do this. 33 The demons came out of the man and went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the cliff into the lake and drowned.

34 When those who had taken care of the pigs saw what had happened, they ran away. They reported everything in the city and countryside. 35 The people went to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out. Dressed and in his right mind, he was sitting at Jesus’ feet. The people were frightened. 36 Those who had seen this told the people how Jesus had restored the demon-possessed man to health.

37 Then all the people from the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave because they were terrified.

Jesus got into a boat and started back. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged him, “Let me go with you.”
But Jesus sent the man away and told him, 39 “Go home to your family, and tell them how much God has done for you.” So the man left. He went through the whole city and told people how much Jesus had done for him.

unsafe says ----So we see this poor man who has been possessed with Many demons -----Whish we see legion is 6,000 ----This story is not to be taken lightly in my opinion -----

I had a personal experience of just an entity in my a home I lived in and that was a very frightening experience enough especially when one does not believe in such things to begin with -----Lucky for me the Padre understood and came and did an exorcism through my home and it worked so that in itself can make one a believer -----demons are powerful entities and should never be taken lightly ----

unsafe says
---This man lived in the tombs ----this is interesting because Tombs were places that dead were laid -----the Greek word here for tombs is

Strong's Concordance
mnéma
: a memorial, a sepulcher
. a sepulchre or tomb (receptacle where a dead body is deposited (cf. Edersheim, Jesus the Messiah, ii., 316f)): Mark 5:3G L T Tr WH; ; ( T WH); Luke 8:27;

unsafe says
----So we see that from this People who lived in the Toms like lepers ---and demon possessed people were considered like the dead -----

unsafe says ----
We see the demons recognized Jesus and believed and knew who He was and were immediately frightened ------This clearly teaches us that God holds all the power over darkness ----

This World Today faces demonic Oppression many are being attacked by unclean spirits and remain in the dark because of ignorance and unbelief ------
True Christ-ians today have God in us and there should be no fear of being over powered by the darkness -----

Verse 31 says this ------ 31 The demons begged Jesus not to order them to go into the bottomless pit.

unsafe says ---the demons knew that being sent to the bottomless pit would be their end of roaming around on the earth and they wanted to go anywhere other than that ------So Jesus Picks the heard of Swine and sends the swine over the cliff and they die freeing the demons to again roam the earth seeking whom they may devour ------Spirits don't die

Swine were used as they were deemed unclean animals ------

unsafe says
--So we see the man is healed and is made whole again ----Many will feel sorry for the pigs but who and what is more important today animals or Humans when it comes to saving a soul ------Both are important in our world but when it comes to the choice of who has to go Humans I am sure or I hope for sure would be first over the animal ------

Verse 34 and 35 says ------34 When those who had taken care of the pigs saw what had happened, they ran away. They reported everything in the city and countryside. 35 The people went to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out. Dressed and in his right mind, he was sitting at Jesus’ feet. The people were frightened.

unsafe says
--These people were frightened that the man was now in his right mind ------they didn't seem to mind when the man was around all mixed up and acting crazy but they didn't want to acknowledge his health ------

This to me says that People are more afraid as to what Jesus can do in their lives than they are od what Satan can do in their lives -----We have the Word now to tell them what Jesus can do in their lives but they push it away and trust Satan more ------God is always pulling on us to come to Him but we keep pushing Him Out and after a time He just might leave and allow the person to have their way with Satan ----after all we are free to choose ------If Satan is who we want then God will not interfere ------

unsafe says
---and that is what the people did the asked Jesus to Leave in verse 37------

37 Then all the people from the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave because they were terrified.

unsafe says ---We see the man is very grateful and he wants to go with Jesus but Jesus tells him to go home and tell what happened ----Jesus didn't just heal the man He changed heart and Jesus wanted this man to Minister to others in his own home town and in his house hold -----

My opinion Here ----It is easier to minister to strangers then it is to our own families and people in the town we live in as people know us and what our upbringing was like and all the bad things we did and they use that to their advantage when a person they know tries to school them on God and His Word ----
Example --the people may say ---OH YA ---I knew you when you were drinking in the tavern and skipping school etc and your here telling us about Jesus ------

unsafe says -------If this man was known to be possessed with madness in his home town seeing him as being sane again would be very noticeable and would make an impact on people who actually knew him in his madness -------many believe by seeing ------ This man had a great message to share as to what Great things Jesus did for him -----

True Christ-ians should not be ashamed to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ today ------

Thoughts on Luke 8:34-39...

The swineherds were shocked at this action of the animals entrusted to them. When this occured, they brought the news to the area's people, wherever such lived as owned some of the drowned swine.

The people went to see what happened. They came to Jesus, in an angry mood. They found things which should have made them praise God. The man was now sitting at Jesus' feet; dressed and rational.

Supernatural's presence grabbed them, and they were afraid. They didn't learn the lesson which was held before them; they didn't realize that this was a visitation-time for them.

Neither did they understand when those that were present told them how the demoniac had been delivered. This increased their terror, they were possessed with a fear, they were panic-stricken.

The entire countryside, as one, arose and begged Jesus to leave their coasts. Their pigs exceeded both the value of the former demoniac and of Jesus.

☆ Today there are many that neglect Jesus. People act as though there were ever time for trusting in Jesus after their hoard has grown large enough, forgetting, that grace's time may never come again. ☆

Jesus complied with their request, since for him to stay in the country would've been foolish.

When the healed man begged Jesus that he might become one of his missionaries, he denied the request. This man would be Jesus' substitute in these parts.

It was good for the man that he should tell his people what had happened. The man became a missionary throughout the region, sharing what Jesus had done. His faith made him declare God's works

♡ Missionaries have received such God-gifts in and through Jesus. It behooves every one that loves Jesus to speak of the things which God has done for them, as far as his influence reaches. ♡

Summary: Luke 8: 40 - 56

Jesus is begged to go to the home of Jairus, a leader in the synagogue. Jairus' daughter, who is about twelve years old, is dying. Jesus agrees to go and the crowd presses in on him.

A woman in the crowd who has been hemorrhaging for twelve years is healed when she touches the fringe of His clothes.

Jesus asks who has touched him because he felt the power go out of him. The woman approaches him, trembling, and Jesus says. "Daughter your faith has made you well; go in peace."

As He is speaking, someone comes from Jairus' house to say his daughter has died. Jesus responds, "Do not fear. Only believe and she will be saved." Jesus enters the house with Peter, John and James. Jesus tells the parents not to weep, for the child is only sleeping.

Jesus takes her by the hand and says, "Child, get up." Her spirit returns and she gets up at once. Jesus directs the parents to give her something to eat.

The parents are astonished but Jesus orders them to tell no one what happened.

Reflection: Luke 8: 40 - 56

Two miraculous healings which are attributed by Jesus to faith. In the first case, Jesus himself needs to take no action. He feels the power go out of him when the woman touches the fringe of his garment.

I wonder why the number twelve is mentioned twice. Co-incidence?

Are Peter, James and John presented here as the most important disciples?

And why are Jairus and his wife ordered to tell no one what has happened? The demon possessed man in Gerasenes was told just the opposite thing, i.e. he was ordered to go home and proclaim what God had done for him.

Likely the repetition of '12 years' is not a coincidence... # of tribes, of apostles, and so forth. It's interesting that after 12 years, in each case, new life comes-- the woman is healed of a long-time disease; she is once more rendered ritually 'clean', and can take her place in the community again. The girl, who has died, is raised to new life, a new beginning right at the edge of adulthood, another new beginning. Why the parents are told to keep silence, not sure.
Peter, James and John do seem to be the 'inner circle'; they are the same ones present at the Transfiguration (which we read about today in the Lectionary.

Thoughts on Luke 8:43-48...

The crowd's thronging, which Dr. Luke emphasizes, was taken advantage of by a woman.

She'd been in the sickness of a blood-flux for 12 years' space. This issue rendered her Levitically unclean, and deprived her of the rights of the congregation's other members. As Dr. Luke writes, doctors couldn't heal her of her sickness.

This woman touched the hem of Jesus' cloak, which He wore according to Jewish custom. This was a faith-act. Her humility kept her from making her illness public.

Her faith was rewarded, "blood's flow was stopped, the healing was complete."

Jesus determined to test the woman. Turning around, he asked who'd touched Him. The remark was addressed to the missionaries, and they, and the others near them, denied any willful jolting. Jesus insisted that someone had deliberately touched him.

When the woman saw that her secret was known, she confessed. She dwelt upon her having been cured when the virtue had left him, when the power was given by Jesus as a reward of her faith.

At this point, Jesus gave her the confidence that her faith had healed her. He commends faith, by which it's able to do things. Her health was a reward for her trust's firmness. She should go home in peace.

☆ Such faith's needed in the Church today; there's too much sameness in church-members' lives in merely moving along a missional way. ☆
