Hey Bette - sorry to hear of another death in your circle. Sadness multiplies often when these occur in such succession. Be gentle with yourself.
 
So at noon today I find out our furnace isn't working-from my youngest. I try thermostat and nothing so I send him to get the number of repair company off the furnace. He does and I call. Now here -it's like getting a doctor-all are not accepting new customers.
But we used them last year and so they will send their repair guy out tomorrow at 8am as he is working out of town today.
Son does laundry, I set oven to self-clean. Son gets out our portable oil filled heater and I turn on gas fireplace-it's on a 30 min. timer.

After work-then yoga-then stop home to go out for dinner. Pancake Tues so off to Denny's.
Come home-change fan to on instead of auto. Crank thermostat up to 30 degrees and low and behold we have heat. Not sure if it will last or not but my guess is I need a new thermostat.
Tonight is looking a whole lot warm than anticipated though.

And in case you were wondering it would only get down to -9 or so outside overnight and we could keep this place above zero-but wearing coats inside temp.
 
We are so divorced from the realities of our Canadian climate...until our furnace, or the thermostat, gives out. Thermostat is a lucky answer. I got the "unlucky" answer last year that my 15-year guaranteed furnace had lasted 14 years. A huge tip: cat hair is electrically conductive, dog hair is not. If you have cat(s), be super-anal about changing your furnace filter MONTHLY.

actually it turns out the motor is on its last legs and so that will be replaced. I managed to get it on with the thermostat but it is not always responding to it. And it is creaking...
 
Ahh .... big heart shaped hugs to you crazyheart. Hard to be acknowledging that first anniversary of Morley's death. So glad you and your family were able to be together to share a meal and no doubt lots of memories too. Cozy up here on the couch with me - we'll watch the Olympics, chatter a bit, do some knitting ...
 
I've done something completely wrong with my knitting. I think I got turned in the wrong direction or something. Back to the cast-on, I guess...Damn, these fingerless mitts are going to be a long time coming.

I call those practice runs. I usually do better on the redo. I consider it part of the process. I'd be more frustrated if I didn't

Picked up my knitting sister this morning to bring her into town to get a rental car (long story, but she's managed to incapacitate both her own car and her guy's truck in a week). She suggested that I get in the habit of putting in the odd cheater ribbon, suggested a 9" loop instead of 4 needles, and putting a dab of nailpolish on the right needle so that I don't get turned around. She also confirmed that it was a bit self-defeating to put a lacy pattern in a self-patterning wool, and suggested I save this lacy pattern for a solid fingering and choose a plain pattern for the wool I had. She also gave me my Xmas gift - a cowl in beautiful checkerboard pattern and a pair of matching fingerless gloves - in the softest of soft multi-green shade wool that feels like it has a ton of cashmere in it.
