I just listened to this clip. I guess I knew what has been happening on campuses lately. Having it spelled out like this is horrifying. This is what I mean by bubble wrapping if @Kimmio is interested in understanding. Now I understand (sort of) how I can be accused of supporting racism etc because I question the narrative. It is sad how the word "liberal" has been bastardized in the last couple of years.

I'd never use it in reference to you. Although I know you won't admit it - it absolutely worked in reference to others because it shuts down those who simply want people to get upset because it shows disdain rather than anger and it's dismissive - and that's not the response they're looking for and they have no idea where to go with it. Either be disdainful and dismissive toward trolls or ignore them. But engaging them seriously is a waste of time and attacking is dumb - because they feed off it.

Anyhoo - this is certainly a very active thread that's nominally at least about an important and current subject, but am I the only one who's starting to get a bit tired of it?

GO TRUMP GO! - and I mean that absolutely literally.

I'm as guilty as anyone. There's something compelling about this thread. Just like I get up in the morning, exhale with relief that I wasn't blown up in a nuclear war that Trump might have started overnight, and immediately check his Twitter feed and the news to see what the Donald has been up to. I just can't help myself.

 
I've resisted following him on Twitter......I don't want to be accused of adding to his fans. I know that's not what it is. It is just that narcissists like fans. Please feel free to retweet things I might like.

I also continue to follow this thread because there is some interesting info. @Inannawhimsey has shared some things lately that have given me food for thought.

Okay, so I can also be accused of enjoying a good argument at times..... :oops:
 
The map (above, somewhere) shows Canada with the U.S. as one of the most tolerant countries in the world. That will come as a huge surprise to anyone who knows the history (and some of the present) of Jews, Blacks, orientals, Ukrainians in Canada.

It's a big problem here. Have you seen the conditions of some First Nations' communities in this country? (aka Reserves) Our racism is alive and well in this country.

This is what I mean. I write what I think and I have several replies directed at me not "disagreeing" with a subject but taking a shot at who can sound better criticizing 'me'. And I'm supposed to not take those as attacks. I don't need " helpful"advice from any of you. I feel like telling you to go Fk yourselves you mean arrogant twats. Oops I just did.

I never got an apology from chansen for the disability remarks. Just vain justification for writing them. And I don't expect one. But at least he can do better than telling me if he really wanted to troll me he'd have me curled up in the fetal position after one post. Nice.

Then Bette, of all people, tells me that if I listen to rational people I'll form better arguments. She has her good qualities but she doesn't make a lot of rational arguments, herself.

And you telling me the reason I feel disappointed in your remarks lately is because I don't read your posts. I read them. Including the passive aggressive ones intended to please the crowd. And the positive comments about Scott Adams. If you can't see he's got the qualities of a cult guru, and he's a raging misogynist - I don't know what to tell you. So, those posts aren't worth thinking about too deeply because he's a trap. And you seem quite compelled by the alt-right arguments. I won't be swayed.

I'll keep on keeping on keeping on. Keep up the victim blaming, if that's your new skill.

You've accused me of doing or saying things I have not done or said. You have insulted me. I have tried giving complements or pointing out what I admire about you. Apparently you did not see them. You cherry pick and get stuck on ideas such as "he's got the qualities of a cult guru, and he's a raging misogynist" and raise your blinders. Even raging misogynists have some good ideas. Agreeing with ideas does not mean supporting everything about the person.

We are more tolerant than other countries
There is always room for improvement; we should praise what we do well as well as be able to watch and for our failures

I was pointing out that map to help Kimmio with her assertion that airing hate in the US hasn't helped...

What Graeme was pointing out there doesn't invalidate the map. Most countries in the world have been conqured and enslaved and had their histories rewritten multiple times. I remember my Soviet friend recalling tales of the racism just between people living in Moscow and living just outside of Moscow. Bizarre :3

And remember we arent talking aboot people being bad, we're talking aboot behaviours (which includes cultures and beliefs...).

Scott Adams is a trained hypnotist and a promoter of Master Persuasion. (Cult guru skills?) And he lamented about men not being able to rape women like they did when we were animals, he said rape was "natural" - but now women control men's access to sex. He said in another post that men should treat women the same as they'd treat children or the mentally handicapped. Nope. No red flags there. Sorry...but Scott Adams is not the vulnerable party, he's predatory, and he doesn't deserve to be listened to.

Kimmio, you are arguing, on the Trump thread, about how you think that all speech you find disagreeable, that of about half the American voting public, should be "banned". I'm asking you exactly how/why you'd go about banning all speech you don't like? How is that not the most rational question of all? "How do you practically enact this idea?"

And, because you're accusing other people of taking things personally, which I generally don't "Bette, of all people"? WTF?
 
@Inannawhimsey I tried to open the link and it told me I needed to subscribe. I agree, we do need to celebrate what we do well, and also do more of it. That doesn't mean we can be smug. We do have room to improve.

People are tribal. We like to have our tribe, and think it is better than the other tribe. I'm not sure that will change. Getting outside our own tribal bubble helps. Learning about "the other" helps. Challenging the "isms" helps.

I guess we are all a work in progress aren't we
