I can't reply with the thoroughness you've given right now. It's been a busy (in a good way) weekend and I have few brain cells left.

That is a good hypothesis. Politicians and others use "narrative" and talking points to persuade. Ad agencies have techniques to persuade. Are we all puppets?
 
In an attempt to get act to some sort of a point, I would suggest it is unwise to criminalize hatred. That too easily used to crush free speech. There are lots of people I don't agree with, and lots who don't agree with me. That's the price of having free speech. Once you criminalize Naziis or capitalists or socialists of Catholics or Jews or Baptists for their opinions, you have criminalized free speech. That, incidentally, has some connection with the crucifixion. Jesus was killed for what he said. Some people, many, saw it as hatred that had to be punished.

It's a sad world when people aren't able to distinguish hate from discussion or protest. Once hate enters the room, there is no room for compromise or resolution. And to use Jesus as an example of hate towards others, I find repulsive.

Graeme has a point imho
Ferinstance showing Mohammadz image. There are some who think that is blasphemy ie hate.
But to others that isn't.
There might be others that get all viscerally angry when they are referred 2 by the wrong pronoun.
People in certain parts of the world are jailed 4 being homosexual because it is an affront 2 their civilization.
And so forth.
That is the problem with the state interfering with us human beings with such things as hate speech laws. Not everyone's hate is the same.
Being offended does not give anyone any rights.
 
I would argue that if you look at the results - freedom of speech w/ limits (Canada), freedom of speech without limits (US) - Canada's results are better.

Yes, there is still racism. Maybe it won't totally go away. But it's best kept in peoples' heads. My grandfather hated the Japanese, into the early 2000s, then, he let it go. He let his racism go. He even bought a Japanese car which he swore he'd never do.

But even in all those years - racist or not - they understood we are a multicultural society and they are the ones who need to keep a lid on it - keep their opinions to themselves, in private.

Canada is more reasonable that way, overall, imo.

Being offended actually, depending on degree, does give people rights.

@Inannawhimsey - If you are a classic British Liberal, you're hopelessly out of touch. The Liberals haven't been Liberal for ages.

Statues are not about whether people are good or bad. If they were, one would have to tear down the statues of more than half the U.S. presidents. And almost all the Kings and Queens of the British Empire up to 1938. Ditto for Wellington, the imperial conquerors, quite a few Canadian politicians, including John A. who sent an army to kill Metis, was eager to hang Riel, and was on the take from railway millionaires.

Queen Victoria ruled over a British empire that enslaved, murdered and robbed people all over the world. She was unspeakably self-indulgent and selfish. But she was certainly a symbol of her period in history. So I wasn't upset when I saw her statue.

Dollard des Ormeaux was a man who tried to murder Iroquois to steal their furs. nobody gets upset over his statue in Montreal.

Personally, I'm happy to see most of them getting the attention they deserve from pigeons.
 
I can totally understand during times of heightening racial tensions - why black Americans, and anyone in the interest of racial equality would want a General Lee statue taken down.

It's old and irrelevant. Put them in the dinosaur museum. Take photos for the history books. But people shouldn't need constant reminders of their ancestors' oppression forced on them in their own town squares - especially while white supremacy is having a new surge and systemic racism continues.
