I can still remember how when I was in primary school - the old Etobicoke Board of Education bussed us all off to the Royal Ontario Museum. There - museum staff proceeded to brainwash us all into thinking that the tarsands were a result of dinosaurs and early mammals dying out millions of years ago.
 
Given the choice I would think most of the people working at these Tar Sands would choose a pay cheque over the environmental issues. Then you have some rich Americans coming in and pointing out all the pitfalls of the procedures taking place. So many people are tied to their paycheques now that any argument that is pro oil sands will sound right. It's as if they choose not to see what is before their own eyes. But who are we as consumers of oil ourselves to judge? In fact the very plane the Sierra group arrived on possibly ran on some of that oil. If we want to complain we have to stop being hypocrites......and I am disgusted by what's happening.....But I'm as guilty as everyone involved....I have no ground to stand on.....and the oil companies know it. We are prisoners of our own greed.

I've have never driven but only, mostly, because I don't think it's a good idea with my disability but I do take the bus (most of them are now "clean air" buses) and ride in other people's cars. Lots of people in my urban neighbourhood don't drive. Half of my large apartment building's parking spaces are empty. There is the car sharing thing too...I am seeing more of those around. The city's building more bike lanes too. We don't have to stay prisoners of our own greed.

I wonder if the average person realizes how many products contain oil?

It's a pet peeve and usually it comes from articles about food and not putting chemicals into the body. I wasn't expecting it from this subject. The first time surprised me and then IT JUST KEPT COMING! lol

What would be best to make stuff out of? Leather means killing animals. Wood means killing trees. Metal means stealing ore from the earth.

You don't think more harm than good will be done by banning new plastic?
What about plastics made from other starting materials?

All of which require the killing of plants, right? My only point being that of someone wants to complain about the way things are made, they can always find a reason. Of course, it would be pretty difficult if not downright impossible to make some things out of the materials you suggest. They may certainly be better choices for certain goods though :)
