Street people in Calgary all have access to food shelter and clothing. Lots have addictions. Are they on the street because they have addictions? Or do they have addictions because of depression or some other mental issue that they self medicate with smokes or booze or some other drug?

My whole adult life has been involved with street culture. Basically lived there from 19 to 30. Always depending on the kindness of strangers. Lots of judgement by those who gave and those who didn't. Lots of love from those who gave and those who didn't. All to do with the disposition of the giver specific to the receiver.
I'm still at home in the streets of any inner city. Church folk ask what they should say and do when asked for change in the street. You can say either of two words, yes or no. What counts is what is going on in your eyes and in your heart. A loving heart expressed through kind eyes brings benefit to the person asking for change. The change may not be instant. Loving kindness expressed into the experience of any stranger is like water filling a cup, drop by drop, till a critical level and then it begins to run over. Receivers mature and become givers.
Walking down an inner city street one day. Two buskers in conflict in front of the liquor store. Who would occupy the prime space? Folk noticing the drama. Out comes my clown nose. Out comes a fifty dollar bill. A bit of a soft shoe shuffle into the action. Folk stop and watch. Elevate the fifty. Grand gestures and tear the thing in half. One half to the guitar player and one half to the juggler and "Try cooperation fellas. It pays well!" Conflict resolved. Fellas take the two bits of currency and look for scotch tape and a bank. Each now happier by twenty-five bucks. Clown shuffles off with eyes open for the next opportunity.

So many memories of receiving and giving in the street. Living in community with survival sex workers addicted to crack cocaine. Feeding them porridge in the morning and soup at night. Getting them connected with physical and emotional supports and encouragements. Being a positive male image for persons much abused by men, often from early childhood. The emphasis was never on changing behaviour. All available personal and shared resources were focused on reviving and strengthening each person's failed esteem. Once personal esteem is established and strengthened persons are able to make positive life choices. Forcing change without reviving esteem rarely produces positive health outcomes.

Knew a young woman who sold sex to buy crack. Learned some of her story. At age eight her mother injected her with heroin. She was making a fuss while mum was doing some john.
Folk in the neighbourhood took this girl for trash. We saw her as neighbour. Paid a steep price for what we offered freely to the broken poor at our doorstep.
Must be a parable about this somewhere?

Exactly, this is why God gave us all brains. Relying on God to think for us and tell us what to do on a continual basis is a copout.

It's a standing invitation that's always presented to us, whether we be Jews, Gentiles, Hindus, or whatever. It's always there, and has been since the beginning, waiting for us to reach out and take it. And this is the rub: we have to make that initial move to accept it. If this were not the case then we'd be but puppets on a string, with no free will or freedom of thought. This is the fine line between grace and works. Grace is offered to us but works is accepting and acting on it.

All I have to say to you is ---you have watched to many TV preachers and your brainwashed into thinking that Prosperity and health are all earthly -----because of what you heard from these TV preachers -----and you have no understanding of the Blessing of God and what they are to be used for ---which I find very sad coming from a person who preached God's word ----
Like it or not the Blessings are there ---just because you yourself don't want to participate in what Jesus accomplished on the Cross to be a Blessing to others which gives God the Glory and prospers His Kingdom doesn't make them disappear ---and the Blessings of God Jae are certainly not from this earth --Jesus died a terrible death to have these Blessings in place to help others and you call them evil -----to me you are slapping God in the face --the very person who died for you so you could help other and not just yourself -----you are being selfish and unrealistic and are ignorant of God's word ----
God's Blessings are not earthly and all money belongs to God and He has a purpose to prosper His Kingdom -------

All I have to say to you is ---you have watched to many TV preachers and your brainwashed into thinking that Prosperity and health are all earthly -----because of what you heard from these TV preachers -----and you have no understanding of the Blessing of God and what they are to be used for ---which I find very sad coming from a person who preached God's word ----
Like it or not the Blessings are there ---just because you yourself don't want to participate in what Jesus accomplished on the Cross to be a Blessing to others which gives God the Glory and prospers His Kingdom doesn't make them disappear ---and the Blessings of God Jae are certainly not from this earth --Jesus died a terrible death to have these Blessings in place to help others and you call them evil -----to me you are slapping God in the face --the very person who died for you so you could help other and not just yourself -----you are being selfish and unrealistic and are ignorant of God's word ----
God's Blessings are not earthly and all money belongs to God and He has a purpose to prosper His Kingdom -------
