LAST after a long day, with the bad news about Stuart McLean, plus crazydad, and a friend of mine who is essentially being murdered by the state of Florida. Two on-line friends, both of whom I met on the same site 10-15 years ago, different working situations, different states, diagnosed with metastasized breast cancer about the same time some 18-24 months ago. Similar age, similar weight. One has had surgery, chemo, etc., and will probably recover, although she's deeply in debt, but still employed and has a healthy husband who works. The other has been, essentially, through no fault of her own, untreated, and now has a prognosis of 6-8 months. She has a husband with Parkinson's, who will now have no caregiver. I don't get it that we don't call it murder when an institution sentences a person to certain death.

My friend lives in Florida, where they rejected the Medicaid expansion offered under the Affordable Care Act.

She lost Medicaid because her youngest child turned 18, thus cutting off the entire family. She 'lawyered up' late to try to get disability benefits, which apparently late stage cancer doesn't qualify you for...

This is the benefit of the Canada Health Act. Rather than the feds offering something and then the provinces going "nah", they negotiated a plan and a set of standards and enshrined those standards in law. If a province wants to go its own way, it can but it loses federal funding for health and I doubt many provincial governments would survive the next election after withdrawing. Do I think it's perfect? Of course not. It's a human creation so there is always room for improvement. But it's better than the free-for-all that US health care is even with Obamacare.
