Room for All
For the last couple of years, my sister & I have traveled to somewhere warm in February to celebrate our birthday's. We went to Mexico, Cancun last year, and celebrated by dinner at Cirque du Soleil. the year before we were silly in Florida, riding mopeds, and enjoying some of our kids. We also spent time together travelling to the Dominican Republic and Switzerland with her work.

We like to fly relatively short distance for our holidays, getting as much time together as possible. Her distance is similair to mine.

We are thinking of doing a relaxing spa week, with new explorations this year in Canada.

She had suggested Banff, but, I have just looked at Tofino storm watching.
Any thoughts? @Tabitha , i think you know this area. @Neo does as well

Yes, i know, i am in a very spoiled position to have funds; and yes, we could just hang out at each other's houses and not spend money...and I get that travel is a luxury not afforded to all. I hope you will still help with the dreaming and thinking.

I am so aware that life can be short. That things can turn. Money is something that I consider a tool. and i am willing to spend it for myself, my sister (and possibly two close friends) to join us.

Wickaninnish Beach, Tofino BC. I think it's the nicest place in Canada that I've ever been to. It's definately my favourite scenery in BC. Very mystical scenery. There's a gorgeous resort there that I have never stayed at but had a friend who worked a summer there many many years ago, and I stayed in the staff accomodations (big tents with compartments behind the resort - she snuck me into hers) and went to the lounge once - and know a couple who went there for an anniversary spa weekend just a couple of years ago. It sounded fabulous but way out of reach for me. February might be pretty wet though. You never know.

Agree with Kimmio that Tofino is a wild place in winter. I stayed at the Tin Wis resort there years ago in January. It was fun being in the room watching the stormy Pacific, but the rain did not let up at all for the 3 days I was there. Did go for a walk on the beach, but was soaked after a few minutes.

Thanks Tabitha. Thinking we want something homier.we did European Spa charm at a lesser price point than that in Switzerland, though, and it was fabulous. I loved the various rioms.
Sparkling hill resort near Vernon BC.

Not much to contribute but I'm taking notes:). We're probably doing Cancun for our Christmas vacation. Just watching for a good package deal on an all-inclusive.

Things can turn - with regards to money spending - use it or lose it - is my motto these days.

Whistler is always nice. Lots of choices there. But February is peak season so you probably need to book early. We stayed at a Traveller's Inn, right near the Village - on an off season package deal - it was a really good deal and we were offered discounts on sightseeing/ spas etc. ( we didn't do most of them but it would've been a deal) and while not fancy compared to some hotels there it had everything we needed - kitchenette to save on food - and we could visit the nicer spots for a drink or whatever. Felt like luxury just to be there.

for Kay William Watson Lodge is lovely but it's primary purpose is for those with disabilities. Second priority is for Albertan seniors. Pinga does not qualify to stay there.

Feb. is a time of lots of snow in the Rockies and at Whistler. If you are not skiers it might be best to visit another time.

That's true. But you can always do a gondola ride and a trip to Pemberton - right up the road - and spa. Much like Switzerland (guessing). I'm not much of a skier but there are plenty of things to do, or reasons to stay in and be cozy, in Whistler. However, at 40 we felt old in the bars and restaurants! Or, younger again - depending how you look at it! :)

Yes, Whistler will be very busy and very expensive in Feb. Tofino is a great little community - emphasis on little. So when it's raining, limited options. Wikkinish is legendary - not sure when storm season peaks tho I have heard it is a wonderful view.

Have you taken in the city of Victoria? Climate is quite temperate - possibly would be rainy tho as it's 'winter'. High tea at the Empress, visit to the wonderful Museum, prowl around the shops & restaurants, day trip to Butchart Gardens (and their lovely tea room & gift shop), another day trip out to Sooke area visit Sydney aquarium exhibit, visit the Bateman Gallery & restaurant, day trip over to Salt Spring Island for the Saturday market (I imagine it operates all year?) or just to visit the wineries, cheese maker, etc etc.

Or make it Toronto for a few days - theatre, AGO, ROM, interesting neighbourhoods - although Feb is not the best weather month.

Quebec City? Stay in the old city for European feel ... I think Porter may fly there directly.

Oh I know - there's this great little retreat centre near Paris Ontario - you can have a whole house to yourselves! LOL

Haha, Five Oaks would be awesome; however, it doesn't meet some of the conditions
1. Somewhere that we haven't been to before.
2. escape s. ontario weather
3. no one that I know that might ask me to work!

The drive across the island to Tofino is an interesting one - a couple of hours across from Parksville to the west coast, winding road up the mountains then down the other side. Somehow I was surprised it wasn't flat the first time we drove it! Duh! Then you'll see the Tsunami Evacuation Route signs when you get to Tofino - LOL! Ucluelet has some nice waterside accommodations too (possibly slightly less expensive) - I imagine similar to Tofino for storm watching - it is a rocky coast there, rather than sandy beach. You'd need to ask.
