I wouldn’t say regardless. Trump has accelerated the possibility and because of his assault on democratic institutions and systems (he employed the wealthiest and most powerful technocrat, unelected, and gave him extralegal power to do major damage) is making it harder for the people to change anything, without sparking civil war, and authoritarian crackdowns that cause more unrest (and death and displacement) and to fuel broader wars with immigrants’ home countries. He’s trying to take over friendly countries. He’s deepened divisions more than any president of my lifetime, for sure. He’s the first president to threaten Canada and our friendly relationship with the US, in a very long time.

Maybe you don’t realize it but you’ve supported this by your wish to abandon and disrupt all democratic institutions - your anarchist libertarian bent has leaned far to the right over the years and you’ve, in thought and theory expressed (which you’re free to do), supported the lead-up to this. There was a while when you supported some of the bad actors involved. Maybe you think wealth is the only thing such a venture changes. You can’t crush all institutions without causing wars. And in this case it’s especially not about upending wealth anyway. It’s about solidifying power in the hands of a wealthy few, without recourse.

Civil war is likely in the US, as an inevitable response to actions taken by Trump. It’s also the most authoritarian internal behaviour by a US president since maybe McCarthy. With even higher stakes because this time, internationally he’s working with despot countries (he admires despots), including Russia (on again off again) - whoever benefits himself - toward fascist authoritarian goals around the world. It’s a new low for the US. And Canada is not necessarily being antifascist - maybe people think so - but we’re just in damage control mode. There are some quietly and politely fascist things happening here.

I’m not sure about that. I mean, the orange menace got elected twice, on a platform of lies. And he lied his way all the way there for years. And he spread lies that became conspiracy theories with a life of their own. I’d say he’s a damn good liar.

I remember during the Occupy movement, when it was declared that protesters weren’t allowed to wear masks - so police could see their faces.

I remember during Covid, while in the city, witnessing what I’d call bullies for freedom (young belligerent guys), yelling at seniors for wearing masks. One lady shouted back and I was impressed but I just tried to stay out of their way. I remember preferring to wear a mask after restrictions were lifted, especially indoors in public, but feeling it to be risky from either direction. I got sick because of that.

These ICE agents are likely hauling off brown skinned women who veil their faces.

Glaring hypocrisy.

The Black Panthers re-emerged in Philadelphia. One of the founders allowed this leader to use the name. Then he retracted it. They’re now Black Lions.

I understand why, in a country with the second amendment, why black communities oppressed by police injustice originally took up arms. I don’t condone that approach but I understand it. It wasn’t all they did. They also had community kitchens. They were in solidarity with other minorities and protected people not only from rough cops but from the KKK, and other criminals in their own communities. I’ve sort of romanized the idea of them - actually a lot of creativity and resistance art and music was inspired during that time. Listening to it as a “past” thing gives a less threatening perspective. As a “now” perspective I just have to ask if there’s a better way. I believe there is.

I think of Shane Claiborne who founded The Simple Way communal living movement - “intentional community” - to help homeless people in Philadelphia. They do things like turn guns into gardening tools. Recently - maybe a year ago - he commented on it getting tougher to keep it together.
