There are those who argue everything is God's plan, which leaves basically no room for humanity to have an active role in its own existence. We are all characters in God's novel sort of thing. And if everything that has ever happened in history is God's plan, I am certainly not about to start worshipping that God. I treat characters in my fiction with more respect than that. In fact, the Gnostic idea of the demiurge, the "false god" who created the universe in opposition to the "true God", comes to mind.
