It was reported in mainstream media yesterday or late Tuesday, that Stormy Daniels was successfully sued by Trump, and has to pay $122,000 for his legal fees for her unsuccessful defamation suit. That’s almost as much as she was paid off by him. That weakens the perception of the case against him.
I also just read a CNN opinion piece claiming that Bragg took the wrong avenue to pursue Trump for his crimes. The payment to Daniels (aka Clifford) was not illegal in and of itself. If a person decides to give someone money for personal reasons, even to try to ensure they stay quiet about an affair, that’s not illegal. Affairs are not illegal. What was illegal is Trump lying about what the money was for, and claiming it was for Cohen’s legal fees. Cohen endorsed/ participated/ consulted on that move, and went to jail for it himself. To say that it was tied to his election campaign and its outcome is a weak argument, also. It might as easily been about his not wanting Melania and his kids to know about it - and fearing repercussions from them, which is not illegal or a campaign violation. It’s crappy personal behaviour toward his wife and mother of one of his kids, but it’s not illegal. It seems to me that Trump would be more worried about losing their respect and loyalty than he would be worried that he’d lose any business or political success over it - because it’s the kind of “sexy scandal” he knows how to use to his advantage and make himself the centre of attention anyway.
The problem is that there’s probably not a single politician - especially in the US (but Trudeau has done it too) - who hasn’t written off a personal expense as a business (or work related) expense. Either knowingly or inadvertently through their financial and legal advisors. Also, John Edwards was taken to task for an affair, and it didn’t amount to anything in court. I think Trump will win this. Once again, it won’t stick to him. I would like to see him held accountable for the bigger crimes. That should’ve been the main focus. Not that I’m saying what he did, re: Stormy and trying to bury hush money was okay…I just don’t think it’s a strong enough case to get him convicted.
I also read that even if he does go to jail, there’s nothing legally preventing him from being President while in jail. Because nobody thought of that…which, with the world being so weird today, I wouldn’t rule out completely. As f’d up as it is.
