Remember what I said at the start of the year. By the end of 2018 the United States and North Korea will be engaged in face to face talks, by the spring of 2020 Donald Trump will be visiting North Korea, and that will be his springboard to a surprisingly comfortable re-election in 2020.

That's assuming that he doesn't get impeached and removed first - which is unlikely - unless the Republicans crack big time in their support of him - since there's no chance at all of the Democrats winning two thirds of the Senate which is what they'd need to impeach him. Or unless he resigns - also unlikely, but probably more likely than impeachment and removal.

There are so many hopeful signs from the recent rapprochement between the South and the North but I worry about how the White House is really going to play it out. Just because North Korea doesn't mean Trump is, or that he won't say he is going to talk and then scuttle the whole thing with some stupidly provocative tweet at 2am the next morning. Until a US ambassador is meeting directly with his/her North Korean counterpart holding a clear mandate to negotiate on all issues, I'm not holding my breath. And even then, they could have a deal in place awaiting Trump's signature only to have the Doofus-in-Chief start ranting about what's wrong with the deal and tearing a strip off the hide of his own ambassador.
 
Well, yes. The problem is that the U.S. wants a war. It really has nothing to do with Korea, and everything to do with the insistence of U.S. big money on getting an imperial control of China. That's been the American dream going back at least as far as 1920. I remember reading a 1920's book on the potential of this for U.S. billionaires. The book was Oil for the Lamps of China.

Do the Americans even know if he was truly elected this time around? Who's to say his next win isn't already in the bag?

I'd hate to be an American and think my vote may not have even been counted.
 
I think we're seeing a wave of election (most recently in Italy) in which people are voting against rather than for. It's a collapse of democracy because 'democracy' has left them disillusioned. So they vote out of anger. That's what put Mussolini and Hitler in power. That's what put Trump into power. And that is what has just won the Italian election.
 
There was some rumour around today that Trump has indicated he'd like to be president forever ... a sign of mega something?

Not quite, he just remarked that the change to remove term limits in China (so that Xi doesn't have to step down after 10 years) was something they might consider someday. It's really a bad idea. Deng Xiaopeng put it in place specifically to shift the locus of power from the man at the top to the party as a whole, to try to avoid another Maoist cult of personality which is exactly what Xi seems to be cultivating. I can see how that appeals to Trump but, unlike Xi, he doesn't have a captive party executive and legislature to make the change for him. He'd have trouble even getting Congress to pass it, let alone the states.

The whole saga...the allegations, investigations, the dossiers, the memos the spies, the cast of characters, the indictments etc. etc. etc. is surreal, and dizzying. It's like a year long (and ongoing with a thousand more episodes) non-stop Netflix binge...

Somebody cancel this series! It's a public health hazard. Mueller?! When are you wrapping it up?
