As you know, the ancients spoke of hubris, pride preceding a fall. Nemesis is simply the consequence. We sow wind to reap whirlwind. Is an age of decline like nemesis? Or just an old woman laid back in a lounge saying: "I told you so"? What a hag ga deis ...
Hi Graeme,The problem is not Trump - and not any other person. We are facing a situation that has popped up many times in world history. Some people build enormous power based on greed. Often, there sense is they were born rich or ennobled and, therefore, superior to others - with a right to make themselves even richer no matter what the effect on others. Capitalism has become an addition to these tendencies in the last several centuries.
All of these tendencies are anti-Christian. But the Christian churches have generally ignored this problem. Indeed, they have commonly been the chorus in this big game.
We now live in societies in which the very wealthy don't have to pay taxes - and most of them don't. That deprives the rest of us of services we need. But the wealthy are indifferent to that. We murder people by the millions so the wealthy can loot their countries. That was the British Empire and all the others including the American Empire.
And the beauty of it is the wealthy don't have to pay for these wars because they don't pay taxes. So we have to pay for them. And every Nov. 11, we wear poppies in remembrance of those who died - nicely forgetting all those values and principles we told them they were fighting for.
One of the roots of the problem is capitalism, itself. Its fundamental principle (though in theory more than in practice) is that competition is good. But that has led to a world economic system that is murderous, exploitive, and thoroughly unCnristian. And we have allowed capitalists to assume powers they never should have been permitted. They are the ones behind the mass murders in most of our wars. They are the ones behind the expansion of poverty to make the rich even richer.
Trump doesn't matter. Almost all the others are as crazy and as destructive as he is.
It is, I suspect, too much to hope for change in the U.S. What's likely is more and greater insanity and greed.
This is a massive evil. And the churches have usually preferred not to see it.

Red sky at night sailor's delight. Red sky at morning sailor take warning. Then there is the fella pointing folk to signs of the times. Ignored. Refused. Resisted. But not silenced in any and all having ears to hear.

Fascism grows well in apathetic ground. History makes this clear. But who has learned from history?
This from a Canadian band, probably late sixties or early seventies:
Monster by Steppenwolf
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog
And though the past has it's share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'
Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
What happened to all those 'kids' who were so enamoured with the music of those days? I think most (not all) of them became part of what those songs protested against. And those of us who listened to our parents' music thought there was no turning back from the progress made then...but we were wrong because we didn't notice they no longer really cared about preserving - they thought they were all done with that 'era' of change - until what was accomplished was slipping away - but they were, and they're still, calling the shots. And along comes Trump and some, even many, of those very same people voted for him - in a blind rush to have someone, anyone, different from the status quo.Fascism grows well in apathetic ground. History makes this clear. But who has learned from history?
