It's not just Trump. This would have happened with Clinton, too. The U.S. wants to conquer the world. I know that sounds exaggerated. It's not. There's a sense of divine mission that has thrived in the U.S. for well over a century. It's sometimes called Manifest Destiny. Americans are God's chosen people.
This myth is encouraged by the wealthy - and has been from the start. That's why the U.S. (illegally) annexed the Hawaiian islands in the late 19th C. Think about it. Why would they want a naval base to protect the U.S. way out in the middle of the Pacific?
Because it wasn't to protect the U.S. It was to be America's springboard for the conquest of Asia. That ambition goes way back. But time is running out. The U.S. now confronts a China that is rising economically and militarily. Soon, it may be too late to attack China (and Russia) In fact, I suspect it is already too late. As I have often said, the American empire is in collapse. Trump is a product of the collapse, not a cause.

Big business wants its wars NOW. And big business is where decisions in the U.S. come from.

And Canada? It's a colony of the U.S. Since 1945, almost all Canadian warring has been in obedience to the U.S. In fact, we're more of a colony to the U.S. than we were to Britain. As a British colony, we were not required to fight Britain's wars. We did so (at the wish of Canadian big business in the Boer War). We could have said no in two world wars, but didn't.

Since then? Korea was an American war. It had nothing to do with Canada. Our 'peacekeeping force' in Haiti was there to assist the U.S. in overthrowing the Haitian government. Then there was us in the American war on Afghanistan. and we now have troops and/or aircraft serving U.S. purposes in latvia, Iraq and, possibly, Syria. Oh, and we had aircraft bombing Libya. Why were we bombing Libya? Was it a threat to Canada? And I would dearly love to know what our navy is doing. it has frequently been used for American purposes.
The danger of a big war is there. Even now, the U.S. probably cannot fight a conventional war against China and Russia. It would have to go nuclear.

So far Korea isn't backing down, China doesn't want to get involved, although I think? China has moved some armies on the border.
Perhaps no one informed Trump that smaller nations hold their own pretty well against the US.

His favorite book of the Bible is Two Corinthians. By the accounts of his children, he is an excellent father. He's putting miners of clean coal back to work.

Graeme are you sure it's just about the oil this time......I think most of us have caught on to that one and the Americans should be highly critical about going to war, especially since they're hearing the same rhetoric about chemical weapons being called WMD's .

Honest to God, I hope it's not a war just about raising Trumps popularity to avoid being impeached.
I think Trump's ratings and distracting from the Russia scandal is exactly what this is about. Trump has no other motives except power and popularity. His advisors might, however.

No I don't think this would be happening under Clinton. Graeme keeps saying that - but I think he's wrong about that. It certainly wouldn't be happening in under 3 months. It doesn't matter because Trump is who got in.

Check Clinton's record on Libya. To get control of its oil, she bombed it, had the president murdered, and has effectively destroyed that country.
And stop kidding yourself that Trump is in charge. The very, very wealthy are in charge of the U.S., and have been for a long time.
jae _ clean coal? Is that like clean oil?

Leaving aside the question of whether coal can be "clean" or not, I read one analysis that the coal miners who voted for Trump in hopes of getting their jobs back may be in for a rude shock. Coal mining is now so automated, that few, if any, additional workers will be needed even if the US steps up production.

Graeme I don't think Trump is in charge. It was actually his daughter who convinced him to bomb Syria. I read she was nicknamed Kissinger with a fashion line (though democrats were cheering that decision also). Then, of course her husband Jared is very influential. He seems to have a jack of all trades position. And there are others influencing him daily. I read, during the election, that given Trump's personality and short attention span, the most influential person on his decisions is the last person he talks to. I believe that could well be the case. Despite that this administration is in shambles and who knows who is in charge or why exactly they are doing what they are doing. Really I don't think they know. Probably no point in analyzing it.

I am not looking forward to tomorrow. All the thinking I've done about this has led me to a place I don't want to go. But I don't see a way around it.

The Nazi theory of racism - that some are superior by creation, and therefore have a right and an obligation to kill, is really part of the normal pattern of human thinking. What triggers it is a person who knows how to manipulate people. That person doesn't have to be intelligent. Hitler wasn't. It's just an accidental skill some people have.
Racism has been a justification for all the western empires, and for the murder, brutality, exploitation in those empires. The people of Britain were profoundly sucked into this.
U.S. history is full of it, going back to George Washington, and taking form in Manifest Destiny - the belief that Americans were God's chosen people and therefore entitled to kill and to plunder.
I don't t hink Trump is conscious of his Hitlerian skills But he's shown them in recent days - and Americans are showing their natural tendency to accept the truth of it.
God wants Americans to kil and to rule. They are a super race.

And Justin Trudeau is a very shallow and weak man.

The British press is going wild today with the news that Donald Trump, who is visiting Britain in six months, has insisted that he must be taken to the Royal Palace riding in the Queen's gold carriage.

Why am I reminded of the last days of Rome?

It would be humiliating for the Queen, and for the British people. The message is clear. Britain no longer rules. The U.S. does. And Trump rules the U.S.
This very much reminds me of the last days of Rome.
Oh, the good news is that the police cannot protect the carriage against high explosives.
