For those who want try their hand at it, a traditional Japanese haiku consists of 17 on in a 5-7-5. In English, this is usually translated to 17 syllables in a 5-7-5 pattern but that's not as strict as it is Japanese. In fact, the Wikipedia on haiku suggests that 17 on in Japanese is closer 12 syllables in English when it comes to length.

It isn't that strict (5-7-5) in English as Japanese is based on "sounds" not syllables so it actually works out to 3-5-3 syllables in English, or even 1-3-1.
 
Traditional haiku is based on nature, but modern can be on anything...some I wrote a couple weeks ago...
