Reading along in Mark's gospel, we come to Jesus teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. For Mark, this is Jesus' first act of public ministry after calling the initial four disciples.

There is a man in the synagogue with an unclean spirit.

Jesus rebukes the unclean spirit and tells it to come out and remain silent. The unclean spirit recognizes Jesus and knows he is the Holy One of God.

Here is the reference: Mark 1:1-28

Why did Jesus command the unclean spirit to remain silent?
A theme in Mark is that Jesus seems to want his identity/mission to be kept a secret. One argument is that he wants to avoid being so overrun with crowds that it hinders his movement.

Here are soem articles about the Messianic Secret. A mix of sources provided by Google:

Reading the passage, isn't he basically just saying "Shut up" before he boots it out of the poor possessed guy? Or are you thinking that it "said too much" when it announced him as the "Holy One of God"?

The demon knew who Jesus was and it was not time for His identity to be revealed ---and He didn't just command the demon to remain silent ---He muzzled the demon so he couldn't speak ----

The Greek word here for silent --is

Strong's #5392: phimoo (pronounced fee-mo'-o)
from phimos (a muzzle); to muzzle:--muzzle.

Thayer's Greek Lexicon:
phimoō

1) to close the mouth with a muzzle, to muzzle

2) metaphorically
2a) to stop the mouth, make speechless, reduce to silence

Is this the gospel where Jesus keeps saying, "Tell no one"?

Jesus also seems to get overwhelmed by the crowds at times. Is it Luke who emphasizes Jesus going off by himself to pray?

The latter.
It is also curious that the unclean spirit recognizes Jesus so quickly. The people are amazed by him but they don't seem to draw any conclusions about who He is. If they do, Mark doesn't mention it.

I think Jesus was establishing himself as an authoritative figure to listen to
Yes, the people recognize that he speaks with authority, not like the experts in the law. (v.22)

Mark does a good job of setting the stage here.

not like the experts in the law
Which is interesting because "experts" in anything often speak in a very authoritative way. After all, they are the ones who are supposed know their stuff. Doesn't mean they are right, just that they tend to "sound" right. Somehow, he managed to sound even more authoritative than the established authorities, to cut through that and make himself sound right. Sign of divinity or sign of being a very strong personality and speaker?

Mark's gospel certainly presents the story this way. The four fisherman drop everything to follow Him and the folks in the synagogue are amazed.

The $64,000 question
Our faith tradition goes with the divinity explanation. Some of us may see the influence of mythology or metaphor.

I think Jesus of Nazareth must have been compelling and charismatic aside from his divine attributes.

It seemed not to have workedin this case, as the section.ends with this news teaching spreads?

Thus my notion above, maybe there is something special aboot unclean spirit speech?

Or maybe askin an unclean spirit to be quiet means something different? I don't really know the taxonomy/mythology of Judaic unclean spirits...I missed that in class

this verse says a lot here in my view

22 The people there were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority, not like the experts in the law.---

The scribes and Pharisees relied on their own knowledge using their own insight to Preach on the Laws and traditions and they added to the Laws their own laws so their Preaching was on strict obedience and adherence to God's 613 laws plus their own added laws and they Preached on external righteousness ---do good to your neighbour and be righteous -----

So they were preaching from a man driven place not a God driven place -----their Preaching was not Dynamic nor did it Wow the people ----and they did not live what they were preaching ---they were hypocrites----

Jesus who was 100% diving came Teaching -== Preaching a New Doctrine which was God driven and dynamic ----it grabbed the people ---- it was authoritative because it was it was based on His connection to God and His Divine insight -----and Jesus lived what He preached ----He taught on love -mercy-- compassion and Inner transformation ----and Righteous that comes from the inside and works it's way outward ---

Jesus Preaches and Taught from a God driven place ----and there is a big difference in Preaching that is man driven verses God driven -----

Today we still have many --many Preaching in pulpits under their own man driven place ----and only very few who are Preaching under a God driven place -----

Dynamic Preaching verses Shallow preaching

From Google
People also ask

What is dynamic preaching?

“Dynamic” is something that is active, energetic, forceful, potent, powerful, and effective. The world needs preaching that produces motion in lives, moving them toward God. Preaching should be active, alive, and powerful—“For the word of God is living power.

Shallow preaching
lacks depth and substance, often relying on superficial interpretations of scripture or focusing on popular, feel-good themes without addressing deeper theological truths or practical application.
It might involve focusing on personal anecdotes, motivational speeches, or social issues without grounding them in biblical context or leading to genuine spiritual transformation

Next up in Mark 1 we have the healing of Simon's mother-in-law and Jesus spending time in prayer.

Then Jesus goes throughout Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.

So it looks like His Ministry will be about preaching, prayer and healing.

Over the years, my favorite sermons have been biblically based with practical application
The Sermon on the Mount is a perfect example of practical application Sermon -- -it is nice to hear the biblical practical application based talk ---but was it Preached in a dynamic way that made us leave the church and go home and want to walk the talk everyday -----

Or do we just say -----great biblically based sermon with practical application was preached today --but was Preached in a Shallow way -and we leave the church and are not fired up to walk the talk that was preached ----

I have seen people fall asleep in Church when the Minister is preaching his Sermon ---and I am sure I am not the only one who has witnessed this in a church setting ----

Why does it matter to you how others process a sermon unsafe?

Why does it matter to you how others process a sermon unsafe?
It does not a matter to me how others process a Sermon -----what matters is How it is Preached -----and how effective it is to make all listening want to go home get their Bible out and find out more about what has been Preached and how to activate it in their lives daily

It can be a Dynamic Preaching or a Shallow Preaching which will effect how I and others will process the sermon -and how effective it is to making us move or not move --is the point --

It is about Effective or Non Effective Preaching ----that determines how one processes it ----

Effective preaching matters because it is a powerful means of communicating God's word, inspiring faith, and transforming lives.

It goes beyond simply delivering a message; it involves connecting with the audience, engaging their minds and hearts, and prompting them to action. Effective preaching is crucial for the spiritual growth of individuals and the vitality of a community of faith.
