With a retirement income and 3 kids to yet get married, I get nervous about wedding expenses. I want to help out as much as I can...feel like it's a parental responsibility. Today is my first day of official retirement, as it is the first day of school. Weather is lousy here...lots of rain and thunderstorms. I'm really glad that I'm not trying to compete with that in the classroom! But I saw a few excited little ones awaiting their busses today, and it did give me pause.

It allows for a lot of outgoing stuff so there's is nothing left in the NDs! Thus one is light enough to terminally float out of here ...

I know some parents who give kids a set amount for the wedding. Here is ---$ and the bride and groom choose how to spend it.

Hoping your day went well Nancy - did you get together with any other retired teachers? Lots around here go out for "to hell with the bell" breakfasts or lunches.

I have two kids who might or might not decide to marry eventually. When I was married, I catered my own wedding dinner, bought my own dress and flowers; my parents chipped in for the hall rental, as I recall (my dad was already retired), and my godparents booked us an appropriate wedding night suite before we took off fishing for a week, which was our honeymoon, which we paid for. I haven't led my children to expect any more...

Good name for breakfast or lunch, and yes I did go out with a friend. My mom's 83rd birthday is tomorrow, so I'm making tomato sauce so I can make lasagnas for a crowd. Also, I looked up a variety of cake recipes on internet, and found a new one I'm going to try tomorrow. It will be the first time I use self-rising flour. AND, my grandson who goes to the Catholic school was home as he doesn't start until tomorrow. I interested him in Komodo Dragons, so we spent some of the afternoon doing research. So, Carolla -- it was a plain, ordinary but LOVELY day. Thanks for asking.

I think the huge prices for weddings is obscene especially when the

parents are expected to pay.

Some parents don't mind paying. They have the money and want to pay for the wedding(s) of their son(s) and/or daughter(s). Nothing wrong with that. If one of my sons was getting married I'd be pleased to help out when it comes to financing the wedding.

Actually, I think that if the couple was on the hook more often, you'd see the cost come down. Mrs. M and I paid for our own (we were both working by the time we got hitched) and strove to keep things simple (though my mother made sure they didn't get as simple as we wanted ). As long as the wedding industry knows they can count on proud, image-conscious parents taking out a second mortgage to pay for the event, prices will stay high.

Good to hear that you got some camping time Pinga.

Some interesting thoughts around weddings - didn't we 'do' this topic before?

I think the most expensive part of our wedding was the license. Friends drove us to the Court House. Friends provided the single flower corsages. We catered our own wedding feast in our tiny suite - baked ham, potatoes, veggies and salad. My best friend made the cake - very basic. She also supplied some dishes and cutlery as we only had enough for four (apart from some pretty awful camping ones)!

EL opus is a good solution ... just get right out from under the ridiculous charges ... like the Eire of the Light Brigade ... Haute non-sense? It floats only till kohled ... then the story can be pencilled in as Koehler ...

Subliminal scratching's ...

So this was part 2 of the wedding I was at. Part one was in Thunder Bay.
To keep costs down, plastic table clothes from the dollar store, plastic (but classy) plates and cutlery from Costco. Caterer brought in food. Served Buffet style with bridal party acting as servers. One paid bartender-cash bar-and best man (who is licensed bar tender) assisting.
Variety of desserts. Slab cake and then other desserts were brought by friends. and a good time was had by all!

In my last week, I have spent one overnight at Five Oaks for a board retreat with a busy agenda, then, some time and work with Dad, then, Seeler & the Blue Jays (they won!), doctor's appointment for Dad on Sunday, book club, and then, another overnight at the Five Oaks for the member working group, including some leadership.

Appointment today with Dad, then, I think that I will take some time to be in the garden and hang some clothes on the line.. It's a beautiful fall day.

That's a busy week pinga! good thing you are retired!!

Beautiful day, so I got out in the garden for a while this morning which was a good thing. Then off to do a bit of shopping - I needed a new lab coat for work - the one I've worn so comfortably for almost 30 years (!) is finally asking for its retirement. Found a nice one with some white floral embroidery on the collar and pockets :-) Also got some on-line Xmas stuff done! So a good day here too :-)

I'm off for a slightly delayed trip to Montreal this week. Usually visit during the Jazz Festival, but trip to U.K. interfered this year, so I'm off to catch up with my favourite ex-in-laws taking along my beloved ex-stepmother-in-law. Ditched the man, kept the family. The Botanical Gardens always beckon; there will be good food, good talk, good music.

Carolla, you are, as always a woman after my own heart. I consider 20 years old "just worn in" for favourite garments.

We have a Jazz festival in Fredericton this week ... they tell me it is based on dark unknowns ... otherwise negro spiritualization of things blanched out ... versions of reality can't grasp ... like men in dark suites ... yet on CBC today they said there is a great controversy over suite things as determined by the sugar institute bribing researchers about the effect of fats, cholesterol, etc. on the diet and cardiology separate from sweet things that could cause a fall in the heart ...
