There is a real changing-of-the-guard moment happening. My father was such a dominant figure in the family. Not now. We used to argue over how to best do anything. He came from a carpentry background and I'm obviously a dumbass engineer. So I'm used to him doing a lot of maintenance items in the background, without my help, partly because I'd do it wrong.
Well now he's not doing the maintenance, nor is he telling me what needs to be done. So I'm on the hunt for stuff before s**t breaks. The water filter, for example, I just realized, probably hasn't been changed in a long time. I did it with him once or twice over 10 years. I guess I'll figure it out.
A couple years ago I changed the pump in the well. Not for the claustrophobic. The last time my dad did it in the 90s, he used a torch to soften the plastic pipe to remove the old one. Propane had leaked from the cylinder and when he lit the torch, the explosion took his eyebrows off. When I did it, I decided to use an electric heat gun, thus retaining my ability to look surprised.
But that was one of the last things he instructed me to do. Now he doesn't remember what needs done. Kinda sucks.
