Righteous vs Self Righteous

God is within us, in that God is whatever we want God to be. Just look at the number of different views of God on this forum alone - and they are all supposed to be based on Christianity. We clearly make it up as we go, and then pick the parts of the bible that justify what we want to believe. We can look at specific verses, or we can look at the body of work and summarize it to our liking. Either way, it's us playing God, then being all happy with ourselves or others when they agree with us.

The thing is, some of the most violent and evil positions derived from the bible have been described as "righteous". It has rendered the term into a punchline instead of a compliment.
I think we tend to "fill in the blanks" when we attempt to know the unknowable parts of God, especially as you say "it's us playing God". (I assume you are using the phrase in a human sort of way).

If God is nothing ...

Would that explain the gnawing feelings when you know flawed humanity is missing something?

Then if God likes diversity is unity the devil collecting the unknowns?

Most all you see" here, is meaning to seek The LORD Your GOD. That is how you find righteousness " of GOD. You walk with God , and He with you. We must learn to follow our GOD" as He wishes ,not as humankind believe an walk.

Righteousness is one of the chief attributes of God as portrayed in the Hebrew Bible. Its chief meaning concerns ethical conduct (for example, Leviticus 19:36; Deuteronomy 25:1; Psalm 1:6; Proverbs 8:20). In the Book of Job the title character is introduced to us as a person who is perfect in righteousness.

Christianity[edit]

The New Testament continues the Hebrew Bible's tradition of the ethical (1 Thessalonians 2:10) and legal (1 Corinthians 4:4) aspects of righteousness. William Lane Craig argues that we should think of God as the paradigm, the locus, the source of all righteousness.[1] Matthew's gospel contains the most utterances of the word. In Matthew's account of the baptism encounter Jesus tells the prophet "it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness" as Jesus requests that John perform the rite for him. The Sermon of the Mount contains the memorable commandment "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness". The Greek word dikaiosune also means justice[2] and the sole translation using this rendering for Matthew 6:33 is the New English Bible.

Jesus asserts the importance of righteousness by saying in Matthew 5:20, "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." Jesus also re-affirms the Laws of Moses by saying in Matthew 5:19, "Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

However, Paul the Apostle speaks of two ways, at least in theory, to achieve righteousness: through the Law of Moses (or Torah); and through faith in the atonement made possible through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 10:3-13). Some interpret that he repeatedly emphasizes that faith is the only effective way. Reference (Romans 4:5). (Romans 3:21-24). For example, just a few verses earlier, he states the Jews did not attain the law of righteousness because they sought it not by faith, but by works (Romans 9:30-33). The New Testament speaks of a salvation founded on God's righteousness, as exemplified throughout the history of salvation narrated in the Old Testament (Romans 9-11). Paul writes to the Romans that righteousness comes by faith: "...a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" (Romans 1:17)

Then why do we get so many of these damned seculars preaching missals at us like cheap shots if our emotions and love speak better than devilish intelligence?

Is it logic searching out your love in secular circe ... could it lead to you loosing something else ... like your mind if you love rests on monis a singular of li sa've your concerns if rich enough to choose not thinking?

Many authorities suffer that unhealthy attribute --- Mark 8:36 on lost soles? Thus rye Ba'aLs of the feet behind the toes ... tens' at the face to face situ!

Sort of reminds me of Na Zea isms ...

@airclean What are your thoughts about knowledge and thinking as a literalist? This all considering the tree of knowledge being cut down by the God of love ... passions rule here ... intellect is beyond us ... makes me have fitz of giggles ...

The Sermon on the Mount is said to be the greatest sermon ever preached. Do you think this is our guide to being righteous in God's eyes and how to follow in Jesus' footsteps within Christianity?

The Sermon on the Mount:

The "greatest sermon ever preached?" That would depend on what is meant by "greatest." It's arguably the most important sermon ever preached, but I'd say that it wasn't the best sermon ever done in the way that we now think of sermons. As far as its being, "our guide," I'd say it's an excellent capsule of what our written guide is as Christians (which I believe to be the Holy Bible). There are other such capsules found in Scripture. The one that comes immediately to mind is the set of household codes found in the book of Ephesians.

I'd start with 7:1-6. Worrying about our own self and not judging other's life paths is possibly as good a path to righteousness I can think of.

How are we to interpret the last verse, 7:6. Who are the dogs and who are the pigs? Is that a judgement call?

--Perhaps a Question to you . I believe will answer your question very nicely. Looking at the past till our time. Do you believe Humankind has done the good with there Knowledge" they came by have now that they should have? Our we trying to find ways for Humankind to live longer" without sickness"? Or our we more interested in finding ways to Kill" them? Are we more peaceful or less? Has Humankind; learned yet how to Love one another? Or destroy all Life?

Just to clarify, is this your answer to "who are the dogs and the pigs" airclean ?

I think you're right in some regards. We may have the knowledge to know we should love one another, but we tend to still be able to justify to ourselves how that is achieved. Killing others sometimes becomes part of how we think peace will reign on earth. It probably won't be until we stop killing any living thing that our blood lust and wars will stop.

Do you follow Aristotle's/Rome's household codes of the day or Jesus' revision?

Sorry, didn't see the end of that para; wyrd place to put verse 6, dontcha think?

Don't know what to do with that...

I was speaking of the household codes Paul wrote in the book of Ephesians. I see no conflict between them.

As for Matthew 7:6, I believe the dogs are those who denounce belief in God, and the pigs those who mock it.

You're vegetarian, right, Waterfall? I sympathize with your desire that animals not suffer, but I also think it's something of a denial of the animals we are. We are evolved to be omniverous. As soon as we say "killing any living thing", we've established a line. Insects? Water insects? Trees? Only annual plants really barely escape this category, and even then, did we leave some seeds to make plants for next year?

I think all kinds of cases can be made for eating less meat, for making sure that our meat sources are ethical and sustainable; it's hard for me to see the ethical position that "killing nothing would lead to world peace"...
