Seeler -----it seems that your Resolution is not to read Bible and get any spiritual meaning from it ----it seems your Resolution is to skim over the Books of the Bible just giving a small human summary of what you yourself get from what you read without any thought of what the Spiritual message might be by relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance in what the real message is -----Anyone who can read can read the words of the Bible but not everyone can get Spiritual meaning behind the words of the Bible -----you skipped over the Good Samaritan story altogether in this Chapter ---no mention of it in your short summary ----

The Resolution should be to get the Spiritual message of what the words are revealing in each Chapter -----For example ----

Your Quote ----- At the end of chapter 10, has Jesus visit the home of Martha and Mary – another familiar story.

unsafe says ----How do you know that everyone who reads your posts is familiar with this story ----This scripture has much to give in revealing a Spiritual message but you seem to be more interested in talking about the well known Religious leaders and what material things they have then you are about giving the Spiritual message that Martha and Mary convey in their encounter with Jesus ---

Just in case anyone might be interested in any of the Spiritual messages in Luke 10 which has many ---I am posting Matthew Henry's Commentary on this Chapter --

Seventy disciples sent forth. (1-16) The blessedness of Christ's disciples. (17-24) The good Samaritan. (25-37) Jesus at the house of Martha and Mary. (38-42)

Commentary on Luke 10:1-16
(Read Luke 10:1-16)

Christ sent the seventy disciples, two and two, that they might strengthen and encourage one another. The ministry of the gospel calls men to receive Christ as a Prince and a Saviour; and he will surely come in the power of his Spirit to all places whither he sends his faithful servants. But the doom of those who receive the grace of God in vain, will be very fearful Those who despise the faithful ministers of Christ, who think meanly of them, and look scornfully upon them, will be reckoned as despisers of God and Christ.

Commentary on Luke 10:17-24
(Read Luke 10:17-24)

All our victories over Satan, are obtained by power derived from Jesus Christ, and he must have all the praise. But let us beware of spiritual pride, which has been the destruction of many. Our Lord rejoiced at the prospect of the salvation of many souls. It was fit that particular notice should be taken of that hour of joy; there were few such, for He was a man of sorrows: in that hour in which he saw Satan fall, and heard of the good success of his ministers, in that hour he rejoiced. He has ever resisted the proud, and given grace to the humble. The more simply dependent we are on the teaching, help, and blessing of the Son of God, the more we shall know both of the Father and of the Son; the more blessed we shall be in seeing the glory, and hearing the words of the Divine Saviour; and the more useful we shall be made in promoting his cause.

Commentary on Luke 10:25-37
(Read Luke 10:25-37)

If we speak of eternal life, and the way to it, in a careless manner, we take the name of God in vain. No one will ever love God and his neighbour with any measure of pure, spiritual love, who is not made a partaker of converting grace. But the proud heart of man strives hard against these convictions. Christ gave an instance of a poor Jew in distress, relieved by a good Samaritan. This poor man fell among thieves, who left him about to die of his wounds. He was slighted by those who should have been his friends, and was cared for by a stranger, a Samaritan, of the nation which the Jews most despised and detested, and would have no dealings with. It is lamentable to observe how selfishness governs all ranks; how many excuses men will make to avoid trouble or expense in relieving others. But the true Christian has the law of love written in his heart. The Spirit of Christ dwells in him; Christ's image is renewed in his soul. The parable is a beautiful explanation of the law of loving our neighbour as ourselves, without regard to nation, party, or any other distinction. It also sets forth the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward sinful, miserable men. We were like this poor, distressed traveller. Satan, our enemy, has robbed us, and wounded us: such is the mischief sin has done us. The blessed Jesus had compassion on us. The believer considers that Jesus loved him, and gave his life for him, when an enemy and a rebel; and having shown him mercy, he bids him go and do likewise. It is the duty of us all , in our places, and according to our ability, to succour, help, and relieve all that are in distress and necessity.

Commentary on Luke 10:38-42
(Read Luke 10:38-42)

A good sermon is not the worse for being preached in a house; and the visits of our friends should be so managed, as to make them turn to the good of their souls. Sitting at Christ's feet, signifies readiness to receive his word, and submission to the guidance of it. Martha was providing for the entertainment of Christ, and those that came with him. Here were respect to our Lord Jesus and right care of her household affairs. But there was something to be blamed. She was for much serving; plenty, variety, and exactness. Worldly business is a snare to us, when it hinders us from serving God, and getting good to our souls. What needless time is wasted, and expense often laid out, even in entertaining professors of the gospel! Though Martha was on this occasion faulty, yet she was a true believer, and in her general conduct did not neglect the one thing needful. The favour of God is needful to our happiness; the salvation of Christ is needful to our safety. Where this is attended to, all other things will be rightly pursued. Christ declared, Mary hath chosen the good part. For one thing is needful, this one thing that she has done, to give up herself to the guidance of Christ. The things of this life will be taken away from us, at the furthest, when we shall be taken away from them; but nothing shall separate from the love of Christ, and a part in that love. Men and devils cannot take it away from us, and God and Christ will not. Let us mind the one thing needful more diligently.

unsafe says ---
There is the human side of scripture and then there is the real side of scripture which is the Spiritual Side which is the most important side to understand in my view ---- like Matthew Henry says in the Mary -Martha story ------The things of this life are temporary and we are separated from them at death ---- but nothing can separate us from the Love of Christ who True Christ-ians will reside with in the Spiritual realm for eternity -----

Very critically human of you unsafe 'd ... some salving would be assist as a rub ... cynic?

@unsafe, there might be two really different ways to work through the Bible.
\
I'd suggest that great way might be seeler's way. You may 'see' this as a trip through the bible through a single person's lens, and you might be right.

How I see it? Seeler is a cradle Christian, whose life experience in relationship to the Divine has been long and deep. She has been baptized, she has been child, she has been active adult member of a living body of Christ, she has been congregant, she has been active and involved in christian ed, she has been pastor and pastored.

I, too, and you, too, I am sure, have read most of the scriptures, Hebrew and New Testaments. Have we ever read them in this order? Maybe not. It's cool. You are a fool to criticize instead of appreciate, this order of reading, these comments. Be critical if you must; don't be a fool.

Thank you Luce, Bette, And others for your supportive words.

Unsafe, I invite you to refer to the opening paragraph. In I think I explained my purpose in reading through the entire Bible. I choose a plan that covers every chapter and verse in the Bible particularly those that are unfamiliar or difficult. I choose to read them following a commentary but trusting in the Holy Spirit to guide me in the Scripture to speak to me. I intentionally you must spend a lot of time on the familiar favourite passages, unless something new or significant jumps out at me. I do indicate where each of them is found and if anyone does not remember them or wants to reread them, they can easily look them up.

Such is the parable of the good Samaritan, and story Jesus' visit with Martha and Mary. I have heard or read both of them possibly as much as 40 or 50 times since I was an infant. Sometimes even now I will see something new or significant in them. This time nothing in particular jumped out.

I do not consider this to be skimming over; rather I look at it as letting the Spirit guide me to parts that otherwise I might ignore or give little attention to – the opposite of cherry picking.

Rather than criticizing my writing, I invite you to try giving your interpretation concisely, in your own words without relying on commentary from others. In other words how does a particular passage speak to you?

Seeler ----thanks for your explanation on how you are doing this hard task you have taken on ----

As far as being critical goes we should be aware of how easily it is to see the critical side of a person and then be critical ourselves ---kind of like the pot calling the Kettle black -----for example ----

Here is BetteTheRed's comment ------- You are a fool to criticize instead of appreciate, this order of reading, these comments. Be critical if you must; don't be a fool.

unsafe says -----By this very statement of You are a fool-- she is being critical of me and judging what I posted --so she in fact is doing what she accuses me of doing ------

Here is what God says about a fool ------

Proverbs 28:26 (AMP)
26
He who trusts confidently in his own heart is a [dull, thick headed] fool,
But he who walks in [skillful and godly] wisdom will be rescued.

Here is your comment Seeler ---- Rather than criticizing my writing, I invite you to try giving your interpretation concisely, in your own words without relying on commentary from others. In other words how does a particular passage speak to you?

unsafe says ----So with this very comment here you make here ----without relying on commentary from others. ---You are in fact judging what I posted to show the Spiritual side of what you wrote that didn't give the Spiritual side of the Chapter you quoted ------and you are then telling me how you think I ought to post ----

Then there is this that you posted Seeler -----Your quote here -----Perhaps some well-known religious leaders of today could follow this advice and not arrive in a private jet and stay at the luxurious hotel, but instead walk into town and is the shelter.

unsafe says -----here you are Judging well known religious leaders ---So in fact you are also doing the very same thing that you tell me that I am doing ------Just want to show how Easy it is for us to do what we tell others not to do ----- So as you can see we are all at fault here doing the same thing that we are telling the other not to do -------How Easy It Is ------

unsafe says
-----

You see the Bible is all about Jesus coming to save us sinners it is not just a bunch of stories with no meaning ----everything in the Bible points to our Salvation and how we can mature in our Spiritual walk with Christ so He can do His will on this earth through us by and through the Holy Spirit so God gets the Glory ---that is the theme of every chapter in the Bible -----every Chapter will always point back to Christ and by just posting the words without revealing the Spiritual meaning is to do a disservice to what the scripture is meant for and that is my opinion ------

If one is going to post the Bible chapter by chapter on a public form then one should give the Spiritual insight into what the Holy Spirit has revealed to them about the spiritual meaning of what they are reading and posting ---that way the human lens is there and the Spiritual lens is revealed as well -----by not Giving the Spiritual we are in fact dishonouring God and the purpose for which He gave us His Spiritual Book in the first place ------If you want to make a Resolution to read the whole Bible yourself that is one thing ---but to put it on a public form to me your are preaching to a church not yourself and it is like giving a sermon in tongues in a church without giving the proper spiritual explanation as to what is being said ------

unsafe says
So here is an example of what I am talking about Seeler -------this is on post 656 page 33 ----this is your quote ------ Chapter 11 in Luke begins with Jesus to teach in the disciples to pray. Here we have Luke's short version of the Lord's prayer. He then gives examples of the way God answer our prayers.

So just in this part you have written here ------your quote ------- Jesus to teach in the disciples to pray--

unsafe says -----
First off ------Jesus taught by example ---verse 1 ---One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished,

Jesus was asked to teach them how to pray ------this says and shows a lot about the disciples and their interest in learning about the ways of God --it shows their Faith in Him ---it shows their Trust in Him ----- It shows their willingness to learn from Him and it shows obedience ----- which is important to know about what God's disciples should show toward God -----

Your Quote
----He then gives examples of the way God answer our prayers.----

unsafe says ----the scripture says -----verse 9 -“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; I seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

unsafe says ---Your comment here -----is not quite the way it is -----Jesus is giving them an outline as to what to include in their Prayer ----Ask --Seek and knock -----then He gives them the Parable to show what He means ----and the parable shows Persistence ---keep on asking --seeking and knocking ---don't cave in and quit ------ which happens to many who can't wait for God's timing after we Ask --Seek and Knock when we don't get it went we want ------

unsafe says
To get Answered Prayer there are stipulations in place which are given in scripture -------be Born Again ----- ask with right motive ---Forgive all that you have a grudge against ------Ask His will not our will ----Believe you have received it when you pray it ----Ask in Jesus Name --- are a few stipulations ---

Today’s reading is from Luke 12 and 13these are long chapters and a fairly long rate for one day. They seem to be a hodge-podge of various sayings and short parables of Jesus used at various times and in various places as he was teaching. The sources are likely Mark for those sections found in Matthew and Mark as well as in Luke, Q for those sections shared by Matthew and Luke but not found in Mark.(Q is a term used for a document that Matthew and Luke likely had access to). There is also material here that is unique to Luke. At this time Jesus seems to have gathered quite a large following. In fact Chapter 12 begins with Jesus preaching to thousands. That’s a lot of people. I don’t believe I’ve ever been in a crowd of more than 500 or so. 500 is a lot of people.; In this case there were so many that some were being trampled.

I will not try to cover every saying or parable in detail. Each contain enough for a sermon or lecture at these two chapters contain enough for a season’s preaching. They are quite familiar for many people, I will touch on the highlights for me.

Jesus speaks of the value of each individual to God. He said that God is aware of even sparrows and how much more he cares about people. When I was a child in Sunday school we sang a hymn God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall that affirms that just as he loves the little things God loves people regardless of their importance in this world. When my brother died in middle-age my sisters choose this hymn for his funeral.

Jesus tells the parable of the rich man who don’t storage burns for his wealth and made great plans for the future. That very night the rich man died. In my opinion the point of this parable is to live in the present time for we know not the day or the hour. Let the future look after itself.

Jesus goes on to tell us not to worry. Just as God cares for the birds and the flowers of the field he cares for us. Instead of worrying about gaining possessions and protecting them, we should share them with the poor. I think Jesus is saying that instead of worrying about the future that we should live as though heaven is near at hand. Jesus goes on to tell several parables of how the kingdom will come unexpectedly and surprise us in our daily lives.

Luke 13(continued)

When a tower in Jerusalem fell killing 18 people, Jesus used the story to emphasize that this was not a punishment for their sins – they were no worse than the people that the were not killed. Misfortune is not a punishment for sin.

Next we have a parable about a fig tree that bears no fruit.

The religious leaders become upset with Jesus when he heals a crippled woman on the Sabbath day. This is followed by the parable of the mustard seed, and the parable of the yeast in the dough. Both of these are parables of the Kingdom indicating that the kingdom of God is growing among them. Then Jesus then speaks of the narrow door that we must pass through.

Jesus speaks of his sorrow for Jerusalem and predicts that he will die in Jerusalem.

Luke 12 gives the parable of the rich fool ------the Spiritual meaning of the parable Is Not ------that we should live in the present time for we know not the day or the hour. Let the future look after itself as was indicated above in post 665 -----That would be our Humans meaning in my view ----Lots of spiritual meaning in this parable

Just to clarify ----This is the Parable -----Verse 15 gives the clue as to what Jesus is speaking about -----and it has nothing to do with living in the present time cause we don't know the day or the hour ---it is all about the importance of having a relationship with God not possessions ---when we die there will be No U-Hal carting out stuff to Heaven or Hell with our Spirit and Soul -----So Material possessions are temporal ----Our Eternal security is far more important --cause we only die once and where we end up is on us ------

GW Translation

A Story about Material Possessions
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to give me my share of the inheritance that our father left us.”

14 Jesus said to him, “Who appointed me to be your judge or to divide your inheritance?”

15 He told the people, “Be careful to guard yourselves from every kind of greed. Life is not about having a lot of material possessions.”

16 Then he used this illustration. He said, “A rich man had land that produced good crops. 17 He thought, ‘What should I do? I don’t have enough room to store my crops.’ 18 He said, ‘I know what I’ll do. I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones so that I can store all my grain and goods in them. 19 Then I’ll say to myself, “You’ve stored up a lot of good things for years to come. Take life easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! I will demand your life from you tonight! Now who will get what you’ve accumulated?’ 21 That’s how it is when a person has material riches but is not rich in his relationship with God.”

unsafe says

First off this man was Blessed by God to have an abundant Crop -----but didn't have the room to store it all -----Second he should have given God what was God's which was 10% of the first fruit of what was harvested -his Tithe to God --------then he could have helped his neighbour by giving out his overflow --but he decided to build barns and keep it all for himself ----greed ----storing up treasures here on earth for self -----

unsafe posted --Matthew 6:21 ESV
- For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.-----unsafe says -----This man's heart was in the wrong place -----he wanted the good life of ease for himself ------But God stepped in and demanded his life and in the end and he ended up where his material riches took him which was not with God -----only a rich relationship with God gets you to the right destination in the end ------

Moving on to Luke 14;

Apparently Jesus healing people on the Sabbath was a big problem for the Pharisees, probably because it showed Jesus visibly breaking the law that the Jewish people held sacred. The Pharisees in particular were very strict about obeying the laws passed down from the time of Moses. So in the opening verses of chapter 14 we find another story of Jesus healing a person and being criticized for it.

Jesus then spoke about pride and humility and use the example of being invited to a dinner party and choosing your seat. It is better to choose a humble position and to push yourself forward to the prized seat and risk having the host sent to you to the back of the line.

Jesus then tells the parable of the rich man giving a dinner party. At the last moment when everything is ready all of the invited guests make excuses. (This has always been a worry of mine – at times when my planning a party or a gathering no one will show up. 10 minutes before people are expected to arrive I start looking anxiously at the clock and out the window waiting for that first arrival and before long but looking to see if anyone else is coming. So far I have not been disappointed.)

In Jesus parable the rich man’s solution is to go out into the highways and byways and invite anyone who will come no matter what their situation or station in life.

Jesus then tells the crowd that whoever will follow him and become disciple will have to make sacrifices and put their discipleship first.

Chapter 15 begins with the Pharisees and scribes continuing their criticism – now about eating with those considered unclean. He tells three parables in a row: the first about the lost sheep, the second about the lost coin at the third about the prodigal son. All three seem to indicate that God cares about

(continued from post 671) All three seem to indicate that God cares for each of us as an individual and wants us to live in him. There is a lot we could discuss about any one of these three parables. However that is not my purpose at this time.

How are you feeling about the character of Jesus' interaction with his own Jewish faith in these passages and parables?

I think that throughout his life Jesus considered himself a Jew not trying to start a new religion for reform within his own. He loved and respected the law, but more important than the law was love for God and for other – relationship. To him it was more important related to the eat with someone did not follow the rules to the T than to ignore if they were suffering and expect them to wait for another day. The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath. Jesus was most interested in love, justice, and mercy. I also notice throughout the Gospels Jesus respected the Pharisee. They were,, educated man and devoted to their religion. Jesus probably enjoy talking with them. Nicodemus and Joseph of Armitha were both Pharisees.

Giving the Spiritual meaning for Scripture should always be first and foremost in my opinion ----

The first Parable in Luke ---The Parable of Guests ----has a Spiritual Meaning to it ------it is about thinking more highly of ourselves than we really are seeking honor and prestige -----Even the Disciples we guilty of this in Mark 10 GWT -----

James and John Make a Request
35 James and John, sons of Zebedee, went to Jesus. They said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do us a favor.”
36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked them.
37 They said to him, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
38 Jesus said, “You don’t realize what you’re asking. Can you drink the cup that I’m going to drink? Can you be baptized with the baptism that I’m going to receive?”
39 “We can,” they told him. Jesus told them, “You will drink the cup that I’m going to drink. You will be baptized with the baptism that I’m going to receive. 40 But I don’t have the authority to grant you a seat at my right or left. Those positions have already been prepared for certain people.”

unsafe says ---by seeking honor and prestige we can sometimes be shamed and disgraced when we are moved from our place we think we ought to have -----humbling our position by force ----

In God's Kingdom the way Up Is Down ----Jesus who is King climbed down the ladder and humbled Himself freely to be of service to His Father here in the Flesh ------

unsafe posting scripture here which says it all ----

Luke 14:10 11----- 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down [to eat] at the last place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; and then you will be honored in the presence of all who are at the table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled [before others], and he who habitually humbles himself (keeps a realistic self-view) will be exalted.”

unsafe says ---Jesus is our roll model for freely humbling ourselves -----So when we think of what Jesus did on the Cross for us we who are Born Again can begin to humble ourselves freely to think of serving others before ourselves ------and when we Humble ourselves God's promise is that He will honor us -----

The Parable of the Great Banquet -----again has great Spiritual meaning ------

This Parable illustrates what is required for those who want to take part in God's Holy Kingdom -----Everyone had excuses as to why they couldn't commit to the Great Banquet ----Everyone who gives an excuse means that none of those people would be able to have any part of what the Master was offering at the Feast ---the ones who attend the Banquet are the only ones interested in taking part in the Feast ---

So it is with the Kingdom of God ----no one enters without an invitation by God ----an invitation by Grace ---many make excuses ---

unsafe says ----The Master of the house is God ----verse 15 ----

The Parable of the Great Feast

15 When one of the guests sitting at the table heard this, he said to Jesus, “How happy are those who will sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God!”

unsafe says ---
The Banquet is the Kingdom ----the invited guests would be the Jews cause the Kingdom was prepared for them as we know but they rejected Jesus ---their excuse for rejecting Jesus were lame ---as we see in the first part of the Chapter -----healing on the Sabbath ----the Jews had really no valid excuse to reject who Jesus was ----when the Master sends out the servant to round up everyone on the streets indicates that Salvation would extend to include others not just the Jews ---Those who ignore the Banquet choose their own demise ---they miss out ---the master respects the choices made by the ones who are a no show by making it permanent ---

verse 24 ---- I can guarantee that none of those invited earlier will taste any food at my banquet.’”

unsafe says ----The basic message is this ----the Jews rejected Jesus and this opened the door for the Gentiles to receive Salvation ---The Blessings of God are now available to all who come to Jesus in Faith ---

unsafe says ----When we don't have time to give the Spiritual message of God's word to others we are like the people in the above Parable who gave an excuse to avoid the Great Banquet -----

Moving on. Today's reading is Luke 16-17: 10.
(following the schedule we will read and consider Mark 10 in a week or so)

unsafe says ---The Banquet is the Kingdom ----the invited guests would be the Jews cause the Kingdom was prepared for them as we know but they rejected Jesus ---their excuse for rejecting Jesus were lame ---as we see in the first part of the Chapter -----healing on the Sabbath ----the Jews had really no valid excuse to reject who Jesus was

unsafe, when you make these particular connections, you perform a similar action to the person who cuts off the tree limb on which they are perching.

Judaism as a monotheistic religion, upon which Christianity, the branch, is based, is the tree. It sprouted another branch later - Islam. It has evolved over time, like any other religion, but then, as now, there were people who chose to follow Jesus and people who chose to retain their original religion. If you condemn them for "rejecting Jesus", then you are condemning the roots of your own faith.

Spirits; the emotions, should also be followed rather than soulful intelligence ... extremists will go one way or the other ... no means of mindfulness allowed and this the spiritual elements of emotion are sometimes out in a corrupt form of power ... best to use that to split wood or hammer nails --- the great carpenter !

Then I learned sometime ago that to some of the Juiced (Jew Cid) that they considered soul an archetypical essence ... thus the urge to stop, listen and silent processor ... to assist the silent friend .... the auld one, drill it out in your mind ... tis a hard spot?
