I have to tell you, that of 3 children in my childhood home, 2 have permanent scars thanks to a "pointy coffee table". Coffee tables can be quite deadly.

My sister's are currently all in the basement! Our place we keep an eye (there's the fish tank too, so close supervision is need there anyway) we can move it closer to the couch so there's a bigger free area.

I think ultimately how much you do depends on how often you will have the little visitor in your space. If it's infrequent, then I'd simply move any precious breakables & things easily ingested, and rely on the parents & others to monitor stairs etc. I wouldn't go to the trouble of baby gates for an infrequent visitor who comes for brief visits - I wouldn't expect others to do that if I was the visiting parent. Play-yard barrier is a good idea if it's easily accomplished - we did have a playpen (old school language right?) and it was greatly useful! I keep a toybox that I pull out when little visitors are present - but they actually usually come with their own toys most of the time!

Playpens were a great invention. Funny story...........................
My sister had four very young children and got tired doing all the everyday care. She decided to pick a suitable time of day (no feeds or changes coming up, no kid nearly ready for a snooze etc). Then she made herself a pot of tea. She closed the doors to the room making it a safe place. She then took her pot of tea, a cup and saucer and her library book into the playpen, where she was able to sit and relax without having a kiddio climbing on her lap.

If you have tall bookshelves and similar furniture ensure that it won't tip over if a youngster tried climbing up it. We discovered that ours were tippy so we attached them to the walls.

Love that story Kay.

I used the playpen a lot with my youngest. I let the 4 and 6 year old climb in it to play with their small lego pieces. When the baby became a toddler and learned to flip himself in it the playpen went away.
