Pot smoking : smell and presence

We are not just talking about "clutching our pearls" at a "whiff of weed", though. We are also talking about the very real effects of secondhand smoke on the respiratory systems of people who are not choosing to inhale it. Hence my mention of "wide open spaces". If things are well-ventilated, I don't have a problem. But as Jim points out, even walking into a puff of smoke left by someone walking ahead of you can have an impact, esp. if your respiratory system is already compromised by acute or chronic illness. A smoker's right to puff anything (I think marijuana should be treated the same as tobacco, BTW) does not include the right to infringe my right to breathe relatively clean air. If I have to avoid a place due to the amount of smoking going on, it's the smoking that's the problem, not my lungs.
I completely agree. I hold my breath too, every time there's either tobacco, weed (or anything pungent, really). I only meant that we need to be consistent. Second hand cigarette smoke creates addicts from the cradle, for example.... this is still not widely understood, so on the "harm hierarchy" (that ranks legal, but potentially lethal substances), cannabis is at the bottom.

I think we forget about what is being smoked and focus on the act of smoking itself. It's another way we f--- up our environment, even if it is on a smaller more personal scale than, say, car emissions. You cannot convince me that breathing in any kind of smoke can be good for us. Even wood smoke from people's beloved backyard firepits can be a bother in my experience. No smoking should mean no smoking of any kind.

Woodsmoke from campfires & fireplaces smells wonderful to me. Especially on a cold winter day.

I very much dislike cigarette smoke and the smell of weed.

I believe Lake Tahoe had to ban wood burning fireplaces and stoves because the pollution they cause became a problem there.

I'm actually not trying to convince anyone, nor do I disagree. I'm just saying that there exists a perception among some that there's a moral dimension. So does driving yourself in a diesel pickup to the drive-thru up the block represent more or less harm than a "whiff"?

Those aisles of scented products are terrible. At home, I don't use anything scented. Not due to allergies as much as aversion. Even some essential oils, incense, burning sage etc I find unpleasant. Particularly cheap, paraffin candles.

Agreed, but at what point do I decide to worry about 4th hand smoke on a NICU-level baby when I chance a toke on a breezy, kid-free day in the park?
My sense is that this kind of over zealous controls / concerns is similair to that with peanut butter in the 90s.

Yes, there needed to be safeguards. Yes there were kids, like mine, who were anaphylactic. The response though was crazy which in turn drove over reactions and responses.

People who smoke smell of smoke. The amount depends on many factors.

A person's response to the presence of smoke also depends on a number of factors.

I like carolla's introduction to the hierarchy of rights.

Frankly I prefer the smell of pot and even cigarettes to most of the perfumes and scented products out there.
Oh gosh I wouldn't go that far. Pot and cigarettes smell awful to me.

I tried cigarettes when I was a teenager. Yuck! I have also tried weed since it has been legalized. Double yuck! The taste and the smell totally put me off.

Have you ever tried to eat dinner at a table with a scented candle burning? Now that is as yucky as it gets!

I'm not saying I like the smell of cigarette or pot smoke for the record. Perfumes, scented candles, dryer sheets and the like make me cough and wheeze. I became curmudgeonly about that after spending a couple of years commuting on the Toronto Transit system.

Yes I get it. They are all objectionable

There are some Shoppers Drug Mart ( a local drug store) that I can't go into because the perfume area is at the entrance. (Or, if I am unaware until I enter, I have to hold my breath as I walk through). It takes my breath away.
Ditto on some grocery aisles re the laundry detergent.

My mom used to say that the cleaning products used in some stores were bothersome to her.

I had to go to Shoppers once when my respiratory system was all cranky. I complained and was told it is okay to go in the out door to avoid the perfume area. That's an option of course. It shouldn't though be necessary. Why are perfume sections right at the entrances anyway? I've noticed that our local Shoppers seem different. Maybe they've had enough complaints? Maybe I've become oblivious? I'll have to pay attention next time
