After having demoted Pluto from being the ninth planet we have another, Planet 9, ready to step up to the plate! And what a planet it will be when it's confirmed...a planet the size of Neptune!

Here's what's happening:

This is the single most important statement in this article:

The 0.007% chance that the clustering of the six objects is coincidental gives the planet claim a statistical significance of 3.8 sigma—beyond the 3-sigma threshold typically required to be taken seriously, but short of the 5 sigma that is sometimes used in fields like particle physics. That worries Jewitt, who has seen plenty of 3-sigma results disappear before.

Short version: a new planet may be the most probable cause for the observations, but that probability is so low it is not enough to be considered proof. Until we see the planet (harder than it sounds given its distance) or find additional circumstantial evidence, there is only the likelihood of a new planet, not a new planet.

And any connection to the Nibiru hypothesis is bunk. Nowhere have any serious astronomers connected with the Planet Nine discovery suggested it is related to any disasters on Earth or could be. It is simply too far away (so far away that even the Voyager probes, far out as they are, haven't reached its orbit yet). See the Washington Post article below.

Oh ... the late remnant of things previously unseen but felt do to gravid affections?

Thus the 6-sum beats the 3 sum in the Sigma conflict of collected information ...

This could be scatter in the event of a fear, or an angry situation .. when God prevails in many things being lost ... Semite Icon?

I realize this is just "hypothetical" at the moment, but it does seem odd that it is making the news as a 60-90% chance that it is true. It supposedly doesn't orbit the sun and the fact that its orbit is so far out there with a 15,000-20,000 year elliptical orbit would explain why only certain civilizations would know about it. The scientists are asking everyone to start watching the sky because they say we may start to see it within the next 5 years....if it's out there.

One astronomer from Chile, Carlos Munoz Ferrada, mentioned this planet back in the 1940's. He actually didn''t think it is a planet at all, but a comet that is the size of a planet, which returns much like Haley's Comet. ( although I can't seem to find much info about this guy)

To be clear, when they ask people to start watching the skies, they mean with telescopes. A Neptune-sized world at that distance would be invisible to the naked eye as is, indeed, Neptune itself. No planet further than Saturn is normally naked eye visible though Uranus is visible to the sharp eyed at times. Neptune was never seen, even with telescopes, prior to the calculations of its position based on its gravitational effects on Uranus. My guess is that if this planet exists (and I personally suspect it does, by the way), it will be found by something big and powerful, maybe Hubble or one of the newer, computerized ground scopes. An amateur might manage it but it's unlikely. I also suspect that we are looking at years for a confirmation. That's a lot of space to scan for an object that is likely quite dim.

Ferrada is more Nibiru crap. Ignore it. If you want good information on Planet Nine work, follow someone like Phil Plait (@BadAstronomer on Twitter) or a good science publication like Science (which you linked in one of your posts).

How long does it take to find a dim son ... or is that core ian fude as flashed in synaptic gaps ?

TOTALLY COOL

WE'RE LIVING IN THE AGE OF SF

i'm having a blast seeing all the different ways people are trying to understand this

Like Nemesis
& revelations
some even trying to tie it into Bowie's Black Star

I kinda am partial to an old short story by Ramsay Campbell aboot an astronomer who finds out that a rogue planet entering their solar system is really Groth: the Harbringer of the Old Ones waking up :3

One day, we'll be able to DRINK WATER from these bodies! MMMMMMMM
(even power rockets with them, and enable people to breathe and drink out there)

Didja also hear that Earth is being hit daily by thousands of 'tiny' comets that add a lot of water to our atmosphere? Another thing that the Climate Modelers are going to have to account for :3 Again, I am amazed at the vitriol that even scientists who look at the facts yet who cannot accept it have fought this discovery...such is humanity also; men dick-waving ;3

You realize you've contradicted yourself by saying that it doesn't orbit the sun but that it has an elliptical orbit of 15,000-20,000 years. That elliptical orbit is around the sun, of course. It's also believed to be smaller than Neptune, not the same size as Neptune.

Of much more concern is that I read just the other day that a giant, invisible gas cloud is going to slam into the Milky Way galaxy in about 30 million years. I'm putting aside bottled water and canned food. It's good to be prepared.

I stand corrected, my bad...does the orbit include all the planets???

Is an ore bit like a cast chit of iron ... when close to humour iron-neigh?

Is English phun or w'at errs in the human processing?

Yes. And the Kuiper Belt. And at least part of the Oort Cloud. If it exists, it is one of the most remote objects in our solar system and circles the rest of the system.

That's probably where I got confused with the elliptical orbit in reading that it orbits all the planets....which includes the sun.

There's been a lot of speculation based on transmissions from the Voyager probes about exactly where the solar system ends and interstellar space begins. I'm no expert, but I'd assume that an object is considered to be in interstellar space when it's free of the gravitational control of a star. Clearly, "Planet 9" is controlled by the sun's gravity. From what I've read, the farthest part of Planet 9's orbit puts it about 25 times farther from the sun than Pluto, which may extend the boundaries of the solar system beyond what has been thought.

I'm not aware of any "rogue planets" (planets sailing through interstellar space rather than being a part of a star's system) having been discovered.

The Kuiper ... or coopers belt that allows iron bands on the barrels of spirits? They must go round to hold these weighty spirits in ... especially if fortified with released gassy matter if they can bier it ...

To every natural force a conjured reactive one ... some see no need to change ... even if the natural forces start to fight back as if in conflict with human expectations that are unnatural ... considering the limits or mortal morals ... these do create bounds that may be unknown monsters to those that see no limits ... and thus the arrival of betenoire!

Few even understand that word as a motif ...

What they have been watching for with Voyager is the end of the sun's magnetic field and it's influence. Basically, once interstellar radiation becomes more significant than solar wind. They keep thinking they've hit it but it seems to fluctuate at bit. However, a planet outside that zone but still under solar gravity would, indeed, change that definition.

Most recent article I can find on the subject but if I find something newer, I'll add it:

Given how much trouble it is to find remote objects like Planet Nine, finding a rogue would be a major discovery indeed and, AFAIK, you're right; it hasn't happened yet. And I don't think there are any major efforts on to find them, though who knows what the renewed focus on finding objects "way out there" might come up with.

Oh, and I may have more to say on this by tomorrow. New Scientific American was in my mailbox this morning (we have a superbox so don't check daily) and the cover story is about Planet Nine/Planet X.

As promised, more up to date info Voyager 1's interstellar journey. They are still saying it has left the heliosphere (influence of the solar wind) but that the solar wind's influence on the solar magnetic field means it may be another decade before it is in "pristine" (free of solar wind influence) interstellar space. Still means that if Nine is further out than Voyager, it is the only planet outside the heliosphere and one wonders what effect that will have on things like its atmosphere (if it has one) and magnetic field (ditto).
