Aaah, well, Jae is probably the extreme of one end, and you/Chansen are the extreme the other end.....which kinda destroys the thread of those in the middle.
 
GOD is an acronym, which some unitheists, which I am, like to use. It stands for Gift Of Discernment, not to be confused with 'God'--the familiar proper noun used by theists. For details check out:

The following is a link to what is now a rather long-lasting thread, which I started--using my wife's maiden name, Turner--also the name of my son--back in 2007. It is in a science forum with a section for philosophy. This thread now has over 8, 150,000 hits and many controversial pages.

I do not expect anyone to read it in detail. By checking the first few pages, you will get some idea of the overall gist of the thread. For me, it has been fun. Here goes:

Atheism and agnosticism aren't religions. But if they are anti-religious, then they could be regarded as belonging to the religious spectrum. The antithesis, if you will.

If, as I feel, reality is in an ultimate state of unity or synthesis, then there is nothing to believe because the unified state can't be verbalized with absolute truthfulness. But it can be experienced, and is being experienced, in the pure, undifferentiated, non-analyzed or unconceptualized experience of reality, as in meditation.

Experiencing this pure reality, and thinking and acting directly from that experience, is my religion. It is beyond philosophy because it is based solely on the pure experience of being.

There you go, Linds, a philosophy of religion that is beyond philosophy.;)
 
Well, all spectra have their extremes, but the bulk of any spectrum is between the two extremes. It takes both extremes, as well as the broad band in between, to make a whole spectrum.

So, if we want to discuss a spectrum, or get to know it, we have to contemplate and discuss the whole spectrum.

Well. Linds, GOD may be an acronym to you, but to me it is a metaphor denoting the creative power, force or source of the universe.

Because I feel that we are a self-creative and unified universe, I too am a unitheist. However, for people who believe the separate, supernatural, authoritarian God to be the only acceptable definition of God, we are blasphemers, heretics or atheists.:(

Your threads seem to get views, but not much else. You link to them in places like Twitter and About.com I see. That will drive up views, and a lot of the views will be bot re-indexing the thread for search engines. Bragging about views like you do is pointless, as 8,000,000 views doesn't mean anything when you only have 2000 replies. That's 4000 views per reply, which is a nonsensical ratio. Either there is a bug in the counting system once it reaches a certain number, or Google had issues. One reply for every 4000 views is Nigerian email territory.

And for a subforum called "Not-Quite-Science", you're expanding the definition of "not quite". From what I've seen, I agree with Tutor Turtle, and I think he has been quite reasonable.

So, I have my own private blog on philosophy, psychology, theology, religion and healing!

What's wrong with that?

This means I can send the link of the PRINT-Version of the thread to the many people and forums I know of. From them I get all kinds of responses, by e-mail. I can also insert the print-version in other places to which I write.

Have you read what Ms. Ellis, the teacher from Australia called TT's long-winded posts? As she put him on permanent ignore, she called them "mind-numbing". I agreed. Then there is the physicist, Orac. He sure told TT where to go.

So, you agree with TT, eh! Have you ever read his/her profile? Sounds like a robot to me. Maybe you and TT are one and the same! :sneaky: eh!

BTW, more than once, I offered TT the opportunity to have an open and meaningful dialogue. He refused.

In my experience, nobody that I know of likes to get anonymous letters. I say the same is true of responses from anonymous posters.

BTW, I acknowledge that mention was made of Buddhism--which I understand is a non-theistic philosophy of religion--for much of which I have a great deal of respect. My daughter, Catherine, has been an avid student of Buddhist teachings all her adult life.

He also advocated that Christians and Buddhists could, and ought, to come together, holistically--working together, getting to know one another, and with others be willing to serve the ecological needs of mother earth and the needs of all human kind who live upon it.

He once said and wrote, "God has no dimensions..."--a point of view similar to that held by unitheists. Check out www.unitheist.org (Warren Farr and I will be updating this site).

TT gets frustrated with you. I can understand and empathize. You seem to think you have an audience there. You really don't. You turn science forums into your personal blog, and I'm surprised they let you do it. To me, if you want a blog, get a blog. See if you can generate 8 million views there.

What's happening with your view counter is explained by web crawlers for Google, Bing, etc. who index popular sites more frequently. You've made so many posts, keeping your thread on the first page and spanning so many pages, that each time Google indexes the site, it has to hit each page again. So if your thread has 100 pages, one web crawler indexing ScienceAGoGo generates 100 "views". That will happen multiple times daily. Your thread has 116 pages and is 7 years old. It crossed the 100 page mark 2 years ago. It crossed the 50 page mark 5 years ago.

You're being hit by web crawlers, spam bots probably trying to post on what they think are popular threads, and a lot of your own hits, along with TT and a few choice others who care to respond to you. If people were reading, they'd respond. They aren't responding, and those who are, are not receptive to what you're selling.

I'd suggest you drop it with TT. It's not doing either of you any good.

Meanwhile, I feel the whole internet experience has done ME a lot of good. Since I first went on line in 1997, I have learned a lot about what is going on in that amazing and often, crazy, world out there, including the challenge and practising the art of writing and having a positive dialogue with others about it.

If you have checked my bio, by now you know that I was ordained in 1953. My wife (a retired teacher) and I--we met at Mount Allison University--are virtually the same age.

In 1953, at 23, we were assigned to go--I say, as a team--to what was then the squatters' town of Happy Valley, of 115 families--now almost 8,000 people--not far from the Goose-bay Military (Canadian/American) Air Base.

I was assigned to be the first resident minister, chair of the school board, and other things--quite an interesting adventure.

In 1954-1955, I did a two-year post-graduate study program at Boston University School of Theology, which operates in cooperation with the seminary at Harvard--across the Charles River, from BU.
In 1955-1958, we served a 4 point charge in northern New Brunswick--in climate, not unlike central Labrador.
In 1958, we moved to Pointe Claire, just west of Montreal, where I was the assistant minister until 1961.

ABOUT MY FIRST INTERNET EXPERIENCE: WEALTHY BOOMER FORUM
Chansen, beginning in the summer of 1961, I chose to become as involved as possible with the Toronto Media, including print, radio and TV. For years, I even had a weekly column, PARSON TO PERSON, in the North York MIRROR. The editor told me my column was well read. It covered all of North York--what is now North Toronto.

Headlines like the following appeared: MINISTERS WANT TO PUT CHURCH-GOERS TO SLEEP
Stories I wrote about my personal interest in the story of, nature of, function and value of HYPNOSIS--then proscribed, by LAW, in Ontario (Bill 27), except for medical doctors--made the front pages of the Toronto Star and other major papers, around the globe.

Then came THE WEB. My first experience writing on the Web happened when Jonathan Chevreault--an active Anglican churchman who told me he had heard of me and my work in Willowdale UC--a respected financial writer with the Financial & National Post, invited me to join his newly-launched national forum, which he then called www.wealthyboomer.com

BTW (which is an acronym :)) JC used the acronym 'WWW'. He used it to stand for Wealth (Financial matters), Wisdom (philosophy), & Well-being (Holistic Health Issues).

Similarly, then and over the years I have heard of and/or concocted acronyms like G-d (used by Orthodox Jews), G?D, G0D, G.O.D & GOD. Why do I like using acronyms?

As with Johnathan's use of the acronym 'WWW', for me they are attention-catching devices. Naturally, I wrote in the philosophy and health sections.

WWW was good fun--especially for me, while it lasted. Most posters were courteous and kept the basic rules of the forum.

BUT ALL WAS NOT WELL, FOR LONG
Eventually, however, several not very pleasant--and certainly not altruistic--posters made their cynical, vitriolic, bombastic, arrogant and bullying presence felt, in all sections.

Long before the militant atheists went public, three particularly diabolic individuals aimed their poisoned arrows at any posts that made any reference to philosophy, pneumatology, psychology, religion (all denominations), theology, holistic healing and the like.

Jonathan Chevreault, then being very busy in the financial section--and also having his problems there--and certainly not a disciplinarian kind of host, left it to other sections to do their own thing. One evening news was posted of the sudden death--caused by a massive stroke in the brain area. One of the relatively young and the number one pit-bull, at WWW, dropped dead.

All we could do was send condolences to family and friends, but none of us could honestly speak well of him as a person. Sad to add that it wasn't too long after that that Jonathan chose to close the whole site down. Meanwhile, a break-away group formed what they called their own WEB-RING.

BTW, I joined Scienceagogo.com in 2007. To start with, while I was at his house one evening, I used my son's 'puter and his first name, Turner--the maiden name of my wife. She is to my right in my pic. For tech reasons, WC2 rejected a single pic of me, which I now use on Twitter @revlgkin , FaceBook, and other places.

Tutor Turtle joined in 2008. As I recall, his/her first posts were made up of large chunks of print with few, if any, paragraphs. Believe it or not, I was the first to suggest to him/her: Make your posts easier to read--use shorter paragraphs.
