This story has the lepers receiving healing because they ask Jesus for mercy. One of the ten, who happens to be a Samaritan, expresses his thanks.Story of the 10 healed lepers, right?
Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsh has a section on praying like Jesus means giving thanks for receiving what you need before you have received it, praying as though you believe you will receive it.
Agree that it is "best practice" to give thanks ahead even if Jesus did not specifically encourage it. I do that in other parts of my life so why not in reaching out to God?I still prefer to offer thanks in prayer for anticipated gifts, to speak with confidence in receiving what is needed.

Some claim Jesus is God, would he even have to ask?The thing about the lepers is that they weren't immediately healed. They were healed while they were walking to the priests to be declared clean. So I was thinking of the time lag between Jesus asking for their healing, and it being accomplished.
