This article doesn't given an annual figure for steel but in January, Canadian producers had import permits for 624,000 tons and that was up 20% from December. You can extrapolate from there. It takes time to find those new markets and get the necessary import arrangements in place. Also, it is much easier to ship to the US since we can use rail. Most other markets, we would need to use ships.

And that's really the problem in general. We have never had an incentive to find other markets, esp. since NAFTA, because we had a market right next to us with an open, easily traversed land border so shipping was easy and, due to NAFTA and our general good relations with the Americans, so was doing business across that border.
