On "Religious Exemptions" from COVID Vaccination

Not specific to vaccination - but during my decades in health care I came across a very small number of patients who viewed their medical condition as 'God given' and their subsequent suffering (pain, disability etc) as necessary for their learning. Therefore, to 'interfere' via medications, treatments etc presented a challenge for them. I had very interesting conversations with many of them.

I have never understood this attitude. Many of the scientists and physicians who develop those treatments draw inspiration from faith, believing God has called them to be healers and to alleviate suffering. So does God want us to suffer or does God want us to alleviate suffering? I lean to the latter when I am in a theistic mood.

I don't ascribe to the theory either & like you I am in favour of the alleviation of suffering. If we look to Bible stories ... Jesus was a healer not one to send people on their way, as far as I can tell. Old Testament seems more about wrathful actions of God.

One could look at those stories and divide them into several categories. Some of those stories are by the victors justifying the terrible things they did to their enemies. A few including the story of Noah and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah could be seen as stories of healing the world or the greater community or interpreted by witnesses in that way. The tribulations of Israel and Judah could be seen as attempts to heal those nations with severe surgery.

The story of Jonah is about God's preference for right relations within communities. For me the big difference between the God of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian scriptures is the former is focused on the descendants of Abraham and the latter is focused on the whole human race.

I refused to serve a woman today, who decided she'd take a mask so that I would serve her, then ripped it off as soon as she'd paid, and proceeded to loudly berate me as she packed and left. Everyone heard it. One of my co-workers told me that I should have just suspended the order and left her.

I don't know how important people think that they are that they can ignore the rules, and then inflict their lawlessness on me. I'm getting pretty close to quitting. She informed me that she had two medical exemptions and a religious exemption. I wanted to show her my broken skin and heart.

I think of my old guy, dying all alone because of this crap, and I just want to weep all over them.

My Internist's clinic has gone mask free (which is really just him and the receptionist). All of his patients have risk factors. I would guess we're also all vaccinated, but still.

That seems ridiculously unsafe, considering, for instance, the extreme rules here for dental offices.

I wonder how many of them would survive a chronic condition that required discipline in following a regime. This is where our communities need to change some habits, especially the one of staying silent when someone violates standards of good behaviour.

Although dental services would have a higher risk in general. But yeah, I don't get it. I think he's just relying on the vaccine but he's not a young doctor either, so it's a risk.

I can’t imagine this is legal. He should be reported. Considering how many people are going through his hands , he makes a good superspreader.

AS I read and understand the ALberta restricitons at present I think it violates the provincial mask mandate, at least when patients are in the office. At time when it is just the internist and the receptionist, assuming they are in separate spaces, it is appears to be allowed.

Healthcare has always been exempt is what I have been hearing.
I think receptionists in general have more leeway too as their desk is considered personal workspace. And then throw a coffee or something on their desk and it's for purposes of eating. If they are walking around doing other things, then they have to put one on.
My dermatologist's clinic has been going above what most other non-healthcare places are but it varies who is wearing a mask at the desk. I am there around lunch time, so that is a factor, but some tend to prefer to have it off when talking on the phone too it seems, it's not just an eating thing. They all put them on to get up to do something like photocopies - whether or not there is a mask mandate/bylaw in place.
